"Raju Hirani Took Sushant On Board After Watching 'Kai Po Che' Rushes" ' Abhishek Kapoor

A little less than five years after Rock On, Abhishek Kapoor is now ready with an even more ambitious film Kai Po Che!. While his Arjun Rampal and Farhan Akhtar starrer musical had turned out to be a surprise success of the season, he waited long before his next could go on floors. Meanwhile, he also made sure that his next had absolutely nothing in common with his past work.

When there is critical as well as commercial film like 'Rock On' behind you, isn't it scary to disconnect yourself entirely from that and move on to something entirely different?
(Smiles) Scare factor comes in when one doesn't want to face failure. So me being afraid doesn't come into picture since I have spent major chunk of my life in failure. I am not afraid of going into that zone again. In fact the sheer joy and exhilaration that comes in when you actually gain success, something that I did with 'Rock On', is humbling. As a matter of fact I am not even much familiar with that territory. What would be any joy and fun if you are forever in your comfort zone? It is better to get into an unfamiliar zone.

Well, you have moved into unfamiliar territories by roping in giving a break to a TV actor like Sushant Singh Rajput.
He is not any other TV actor. He has a huge fan following there and I am very proud of him. Once the film releases, everyone would see what he is capable of. In fact I showed Raju (Rajkumar Hirani) some of the rushes of Kai Po Che! and then he decided to take him on board for
P.K.. Khabar nikal hi jaati hai bahar!

It is also being speculated that the film is akin to the coming together of '3 Idiots', 'Yuva' and 'Rang De Basanti'. How much of these references indeed come into play?
See, a whiff of that flavour is indeed there but then there is a lot more to the film. 'Kai Po Che!' is definitely not the same film. There is a different emotion and drama. As for references and inclusions, you would see everything from religion, politics, cricket, love to friendship.

Talking about friendship, what's happening on the sequel of 'Rock On'? Since that has been on hold for quite some time, can one assume that the film is as good as shelved?
If there is a script then question of any shelving doesn't arise. There are certain scripts that sitting with me for six years. I don't tag them as shelved!

Friendship is not about partying in a convertible

Chetan Bhagat takes us through the twists and turns of his Kai Po Che journey and tells us why 'balaatkar' jokes should be read in the 'right context'

You have often said that The 3 Mistakes of My Life is the most special of all your books. Is it because it got you positive reviews for the first time?
It is my most ambitious project because it takes a difficult subject and turns it into something that is popular mass fiction entertainment. I had an established image of a writer who writes about the metro youth. I wanted to change that. I had lived in Gujarat when it was peaceful. And I was impressed by the spirit of entrepreneurship there. After I left Ahmedabad, there was the earthquake and then the riots, and I realised, this was not the Gujarat I had known. And I wanted to write about it. This was not for my target audience, but for myself, and the people of Gujarat who were in the news for all the wrong reasons. It took plenty of courage, but I did it. Though it was my first book about a controversial issue, I had to keep my core audience happy and blend the fun and romance with some gravitas. I had other projects where I could have fun. That comes easy to me because I have a flair for wit. This was tougher and hence more satisfying.
Was it tough striking a balance between your creative urges and commercial considerations?
When I wrote my first book, Five Point Someone, there was no commercial pressure. By the time I wrote my third, there was a lot of it. But I wanted to deal with something intense. And 3 Mistakes was my first foray into some sort of a national issue. And that is how I began to write columns in national dailies. But again, Kai Po Che also has romance, bromance and plenty of seriousness too.
Was the book's big screen adaptation always on your mind while you were writing it?
By the time I had started on this one, I had already written two books, which were yet to be filmed. I try not to think about Bollywood while writing, it dilutes the focus. With this book particularly, I was not sure if anyone could adapt it well. This is not typical Bollywood material after all. Powerful yes, but a tough one to pull off on the big screen.
Then why did you give the book to Abhishek Kapoor? Did you have him in mind or were you simply handing it out to every filmmaker you knew?
I knew if handled well, the story could make for a unique film. I wanted someone who understood friendship and the youth. Abhishek had nailed 'friendship' in Rock On!. Honestly, I was a little concerned about whether he could handle the Gujarati middle class ethos. While Rock On! was fabulous, it was also very urban, very Bombay. Typically, friendship movies have been about friends partying in a convertible. Here the concerns are different - whether they will have a job, stay alive.
So how did Abhishek adapt himself to the story?
He read the book and fell in love with this character called Ishaan. Abhishek may not like to admit it, but he is a lot like Ishaan, a person who had a lot of potential but blew it'
Really?
You see, Abhishek has seen failure. No one remembers all the five films he has toplined. Both Ishaan and Abhishek are held back because of their own issues, impulsive nature. Abhishek connects with Ishaan because he saw success very late in life, and understands what it is like to get a second chance. In the book Ishaan gets to nurture a talented boy Ali. For Abhishek, Rock On! was his Ali. And he wanted to preserve that
.
As the writer and screenwriter, no one knows the universe of the characters better than you do. Were you and Abhishek always on the same page?
I am more flexible than other writers. I understand English novels and Bollywood films meet different expectations. As long as the filmmaker earns my respect, I am okay with the changes. And Abhishek won me over quickly with his conviction.
Besides, there was too much at stake for both of us. He had to prove that Rock On! was not a fluke. And I had to prove that 3 Idiots was not a fluke.
Were you happy with the way 3 Idiots turned out? How different was your involvement in that from this?
3 Idiots was a wonderful movie but there were certain things that were unnecessarily negative. May be there was a communication gap somewhere. I was not even shown the film prior to release though I had gone to the extent of taking the team to meet my professors at IIT. Not many people know that. This time, it is very different. I am also part of the scripting team and have an entire slate dedicated to me. UTV did not need to do that.
In the current environment, a lot of people find the 'balaatkar' joke in 3 Idiots to be in extremely bad taste.
I would like to clarify that this scene was not in the book. I had not written it. Having said that, I will still defend that joke. Life is brutal and humour should be seen in the right context. A caricature on a terrorist in peaceful times may be funny but when a 26/11 happens, it is not funny any more. What happened in Delhi was bad, but we should not jump to generalisation. Good taste and bad are always in retrospect.
Balaatkar and rape are used in different contexts. We often say, 'Oh I got raped in office today', meaning I had a bad day at work. But that does not seem so funny any more.
You have also come out in support of Honey Singh.
I have heard a few songs by Honey Singh, he has a nice pop style. But social media bullied him into cancelling his show and denied him a living for a song purportedly written many years ago. That's abuse of power. That is wrong.
Coming back to Kai Po Che, you keep saying that it is your tribute to Gujaratis. Does it play up the regional stereotype?
We borrowed certain authentic elements of a culture, and we wanted make sure we've done justice to it.
There is a fine line between authenticity and caricature.
In Two States there is a bit of some caricature for humour. In Kai Po Che there is no need for it. There are no dhokla and thepla jokes here. It's not my style, neither Abhishek's. They don't work any more.
But they seemed to work in 3 Idiots.
Yeah, they can produce some cheap laughs.
There are jokes about Gujarati entrepreneurship as well'
There are jokes about Bill Gates too. All I can say is that we owe Gujarat a great movie and we have done that.

Kai Po Chi film is based on Chetan Bhagat's Novel "The Three Mistakes of My Life".
Coming to the story of the film it is the story of three youngsters who dream big. The hero of the tale is Govind. Like every youngster in Gujarat -- where the story is set -- his dream is to be a successful businessman. He joins hands with his closes friends Ish and Omi to open a shop selling cricket equipment. The reason for this business venture is simple -- they all consider cricket to be the first priority in life. Ish, a cricket fanatic -- has given up his NDA training and is at a loose end. Omi is neither as intelligent nor ambitious as his two friends. All he wants is to escape his pre-ordained destiny of being a temple priest and to hang out with his friends.
The three friends do seem to succeed in their business venture initially. But then life happens. Religion, earthquake, politics and dangerous love push their friendship and their business venture into a downward spiral. Will they pick up the broken pieces and succeed? Or will life refuse to give them a second chance? The book explores whether making mistakes can be fatal and if the dark reality of life can override the passion of an individual's dreams.

Abhishek Kapoor admits that The Three Mistakes of My Life is not one of his favourite Chetan Bhagat books. In fact, the Rock On! filmmaker was offered Bhagat's Two States, but there was something about The Three Mistakes..., that made Kapoor choose it out of the lot. A book that has a cult following and has been translated into Gujarati and French, The Three Mistakes..., reflects Kapoor, "makes for excellent material for a film".

With an intriguing title, Kai Po Che, the film that releases on February 22 next year, according to Kapoor, has all the right ingredients — religion, politics, cricket and youth. "Aren't these the driving forces of the country?" questions Kapoor, as he connects from Mumbai. The story of three boys from Gujarat, the dynamics of their relationship, friendship, dreams, love, conflict, sacrifices and realisations, says Kapoor, moved him "at a soul and cerebral level". Like Rock On! this too pans its cameras on male bonding, but that's where the similarity ends. "While Rock On! was about urban life, music and dreams, Kai Po Che touches a wider base. I would define it as a very satisfying Indian film one that would appeal to all classes and masses," says Kapoor.

Set in late 2000, the film traverses through four lives in Ahmedabad — Govind Patel who dreams of running a business; Omi, the son of a Hindu priest who loves cricket; the patriot Ishaan who takes a budding cricketer Ali under his wing and the rebel Vidya, Ishaan's feisty sister.

Kai Po Che, as a title, was perfect as it means "a victory call" in Gujarati. "It is an expression used during kite flying when one cuts off another kite. It is spirited, young, energetic and metaphorically fitted the title slot of my film," he says.

While the base remains the same, Kapoor changed sizeable chunks of the book, of course, with the author's nod. "For me, Govind Patel is the ultimate Indian boy in terms of thought, ambition and drive. He, along with other characters, was so irresistible. I had to explore all the characters further and bring them to life on screen," he says. The adaptation was a tricky process as a book can be written in many ways, and not every book can be made into a film. "What makes this book cine-worthy is its relevance," says Kapoor, whose believes that his changes have "added value to the story".

This is Bhagat's third book after Five Point Someone (filmed as Three Idiots) to be brought alive on silver screen. Ask Kapoor if he is being put on a comparing pedestral with Raj Kumar Hirani's treatment and approach in Three Idiots, and he says that his competition is to match Kai Po Che's success with that of Rock On! "I feel Chetan is yet to get his due from his peers and contemporaries. He is not out there to impress readers with his literary prowess, but with stories that are real and relevant," adds Kapoor.

The film has been produced by UTV and been shot in real locations in Vadnagar in Gujarat. It stars a fresh starcast that includes Sushant Singh Rajput who will make his debut with the film apart from Raj Kumar Yadav, Amit Sadh and Amrita Puri.

So what are the three mistakes of his life? "Ah, plenty! But I am glad I committed them. At that time it did seem like the end of the world, but what doesn't break you only makes you stronger. I guess we all need to make our mistakes as that's the way one gets through life," says Kapoor, who adds that his inspiration in filmmaking is Hollywood's real master storyteller, Clint Eastwood.

'Kai Po Che actors are very distinct and yet alike'
Amit Sadh, Rajkumar
Yadav and Sushant Singh Rajput
The bond that links Ishaan Bhatt ( Sushant Singh Rajput), Omkar Shastri ( Amit Sadh) and Govind Patel ( Rajkumar Yadav) is the driving force of Kai Po Che. Here are three characters so distinct, you could tell them apart; and so alike, the lines could blur!

Ishaan: He is the quintessential leader. Popular through his growing years as 'Mr Most Likely To Succeed', he dons an outward alpha-male avatar that acts as a balance for his insecurity as a sporting 'has-been'. His is a pure soul and his understanding of life is straightforward with generous dollops of naivety. Sushant brings Ishaan to life like his own. With his sharp eyes, refined features and athletic countenance, I felt Sushant was born to play Ishaan. When you watch the movie, you'll agree with me!

Omi: His character goes through flows and ebbs beyond his comprehension. His is a loyalty that defines a leader, with no personal aspirations of a similar nature. The confidence may not be in place to project himself outwardly, but that only stems from a lack of aspiration to do so. Circumstances beyond his control push him to the edge and bring him back in due time. His is a journey of redemption and he strikes a fine balance between venturing beyond and coming into his own. Amit has a dynamic and vibrant personality, projecting a sensitive energy that captivates you with its innocence until you're turkeying for more. There's all method to his madness - and some madness to his methods - that makes this guy a director's delight.

Govind: His character provides balance and is the voice of reason and stability. His is a world of facts, numbers, pragmatism, rationalism and reality. He stands tall in his shoes, and his voice projects well over the din of everyday mundaneness. Love finds him in an imperfect world, and brings him closer to himself. We live in an era inspired by Steve Jobs, where all good things come in small packages. And even in this world, Raj is a powerhouse. When it comes to his work, he'll never fall short and never run dry. No other actor could have portrayed the character with such feistiness of spirit and ferocity of soul.

They're like Earth, Air and Water in perfect harmony. The chemistry of these three extremely dedicated and exceptionally talented actors has set ablaze on screen and that's like a fourth character. It crackles with life, bursting with authenticity. Invisible in form, yet with a presence looming powerfully over every scene and defining depth in every character, every dialogue, every nuance.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, Managing Director, Studios, Disney UTV, says, "The film, adapted from Chetan Bhagat's bestseller, 3 Mistakes Of My Life, is one of those rare scripts that have the power all at once to move you, entertain you and make you think."

Kai Po Che, produced by UTV Motion Pictures, releases February 22.
