"Mr. Juneja!" He heard Sophie calling him but he couldn't careless right now. He had just lost the most important person in his life and couldn't think about anything else.
He let his head down slowly on her stomach and suddenly felt her stomach moving but her eyes were still closed. Prem jumped up. "Sophie, get her in the ambulance now. She's still breathing! I'll be there in a few seconds, I have something I need to take care of," His eyes flashed with anger and hatred.
"No Prem, don't waste your time." Sophie said quickly. "The police are on their way."
Prem didn't pay any attention to her as he advanced towards the area where security was holding Antonio.
"Sir, we understand that you're under stress but we advise you against this." The head of security stepped forward.
"Right now Mark, it doesn't matter to me." Prem pushed Mark slowly out of the way before locking eyes on Antonio.
Mark gestured quietly to the security, and they let go of Antonio even though his hands were still tied. "Five minutes sir, the police are on their way."
Prem cracked his knuckles and nodded. "Thanks Mark."
Without say anything another word Prem's right fist collided with Antonio's cheek and Prem flexed again before punching him in the stomach.
The glint in Antonio's eyes and the smirk on his face was enough to send Prem into a rage and he kneed Antonio in the stomach and watched as Antonio lurched over in pain.
Wind came through the open doors and ruffled Prem's hair and his hand stopped in mid air. Meera. She had made him promise not to get upset with anyone and here he was breaking his promise just minutes later.
"Don't be upset with anyone okay?" She sighed. "It was just a coincidence that it happened to me. Don't be mad please?"
He flexed and un-flexed his fist and smiled at Mark who nodded. "Thanks Mark."
"We haven't seen a thing sir," Mark smiled.
Prem hurried to the ambulance, and quickly stepped in before they shut the doors.
"What is your relation to the injured?" A paramedic asked, making notes on a clipboard while another quickly fastened an oxygen mask on Meera.
"She's—she's my fiancee."
The paramedic nodded sympathetically before turning to her co-worker, leaving Prem to his sorrows.
He tried hard not to glance at her bandaged stomach where the redness was continuously growing. She was bleeding furiously fast and it scared him.
"Can you do something about the blood she's losing?" He asked.
The paramedic shook her head. "We've alerted them at Holy Cross Hospital, but right now there's nothing we can do."
Prem took Meera's hand in his and kept rubbing it, hoping she'd gain consciousness, or at least feel his presence but her eyes stayed closed even when they arrived at the hospital.
~*~*~*~*~*~
It had been four hours since she had been taken into surgery and he was told to wait outside with the rest of the patients' families but he couldn't handle sitting down. He'd pace from one side of the long rectangle room to the other and even gazes from little children were making him edgy.
"Sharma's family?" A nurse stepped into the enclosed room and called out making Prem jump up.
"That's me."
"Follow me," She gestured to him as she led him down a long hallway.
Prem was passing patients in the hallway who were laid out on stretchers and his heart ached. Would she be like his now? Not able to recognize the people with her? Surely a bullet to the stomach wouldn't harm her seriously would it?
"Nurse, can you tell me how she's doing?" Prem rushed up to her and asked.
"She's still unconscious because of the anesthetic, but we got the bullet now. She's in intensive care right now, but we can't guarantee anything." She told him. Prem nodded when the nurse gestured to a door. "She's in here."
Prem slowly opened the door and saw her hooked up to about 4 different machines and the beeping noise filled the air. He stepped inside and his heart lurched seeing her look so unusually pale.
He sat down softly on her bed and took her hand in his unable to believe the circumstances they had both just been through.
A doctor stepped into the room and seeing Meera sleeping he gestured for Prem to join him outside. Prem jumped up instantly and followed the doctor outside.
"What's going on doctor? She'll be okay right?" Prem asked frantically.
The doctor smiled. "You're her—" he flipped through his papers and smiled. "fiance right?" Prem nodded. "Don't worry young man. She'll be okay. We'll keep her here for two days just to make sure the wound is cleaned up properly but after that she'll have to be in constant care. Is that possible?"
Prem nodded. "I'll move in with her or have her with me."
"Good. The constant care is required." The doctor smiled. "It'll be hard Mr. Juneja for her to emotionally get past this accident. Not many people are able to."
"I'll do my best to help."
The doctor smiled. "I'll let you be with her. I'll be in tomorrow morning to check again."
Prem nodded before going back into the room.
He saw her eyes flutter open and his heart raced. "Meera?"
"P—Prem?" Her voice cracked and she struggled to sit up until he pushed her shoulders down.
"Don't get up." He told her. "You just got out of surgery a little while ago."
Meera let out tiny smile. "I lived."
"Stop it." Prem frowned. "But yes. You did."
"I'm okay. Stop getting so worried." Meera yawned. "What happened exactly?"
"Sophie called me while you were in surgery," Prem sighed. "The a**hole who grabbed you fired a shot and the gun was aimed at your stomach," Meera cringed. "We'll talk about it later."
"Prem," Meera sighed. "I'm fine. I'm not in any pain. It just sounds kinda gruesome."
"You've always wanted to enact filmy scenes right?" Prem teased.
Even in her pain Meera narrowed her eyes at Prem. "Yes Prem, but that doesn't include things like this."
"Then what does it include?" He sat down on her bed.
"Choro," Meera sighed and turned to face the window. "You can go, I'll be fine."
"Meera," He sighed before inching closer to her. Slowly he smoothed down her hair and she looked up at him.
"What?" she whispered.
"Don't be so upset. Main to sirf mazaak kar raha tha,"
"Pata hain. But—sometimes I feel like if you have to ask me something, it's not right. You should know me that well to know what I'd like."
"You think I don't know you well enough?" Prem smiled. "You think I don't know that you always have wanted to walk around in a white salwar suit through a mustard field waiting for a 'Raj'? Or whenever you're looking out the window at the skyline, you're thinking about your dreams? Or how whenever it rains you walk out just waiting for that special person to come and dance with you?"
"The special person's you, you idiot," Meera smiled softly. "And if you knew all this, why haven't you joined me when I'm standing out in the rain or if I'm looking out like that, why haven't you come and hugged me to make me realize my dream was right there with me?"
Prem shrugged. "I figured you might want to have all those dreams special just for yourself."
"There's nothing JUST for me now," She sighed. "It's us. Us together."
"Well if we want to be together forever, we need to get connected again right?" Prem said, reaching into his pocket.
"What do you mean?" Meera asked in a confused tone.
Prem smiled before showing her the ring she gave him before. "Your ring? It's never going to be anyone else's; you are the only person it'll ever belong to." Meera smiled as Prem took her left hand in his and slipped on her ring "There. Where it belongs."
Meera sighed and pulled Prem's hand closer to her and placed it against her cheek. "I love you. And thank you for being here with me."
"There's no other place I'd rather be," Prem told her.
After a little while Preet walked in with Shabo, startling the couple who were content in looking at each other; but when they parted they both knew that this whole ordeal was just a test of what things they'd have to face in their upcoming life.
"Kya baat hain PB? Haathon mein haath huh?" Preet winked as he set down two vases of blooming flowers beside Meera.
"Thanks Preet." Meera grinned before turning her attention to the other girls who crowded her.
"Preet tu chup re," Prem glared at him before turning his attention back to Meera who was smiling widely.
"Kya hua PB? Sense of humour gone?" Preet raises his eyebrows.
"Preet," Prem takes Preet away to the side of Meera's room which catches her attention. "It's been hard okay? I just—it's hard to believe she's still here after everything."
"Don't worry PB. Meera's strong enough to handle anything." Preet reassured him.
"Meera?" Prem frowned. "Why don't you call her what you should call her?"
Preet frowned back. "What should I call her?"
"Don't listen to him!" Meera interrupted. "It doesn't matter what he says,"
"Meera," Prem walked up to the bed and smiled. "It's the right word."
"It doesn't matter," Meera shook her head. "Makes me feel old."
"What are you guys talking about?" Shabo groaned. "It's like a puzzle where we can't find out anything."
Preet grinned before swinging his arm around Shabz. "PB wants me to call Meera, bhabhi. Meera, doesn't want to be called bhabhi. Happy?"
"Much." Shabo grinned. "Aww Meera, it's cute."
"It's old!" Meera whined.
"Oh okay. Want me to modernize it?" Preet winked at Meera who gave him a curious look. "What do you think about 'bhabs!" Preet burst out laughing. "It's brilliant! Don't you think PB? Meera bhabs?"
Meera narrowed her eyes at Preet. "I'm going to kill you. Maybe not now...but when I can stand again you watch out!"
Prem went to Meera and put his arm around her. "Calm down."
Meera glared at him as well. "You—are his brother; you should go kill him for me!"
Prem frowned and then smiled grinning at Preet. "You could have told me before Meera. I'll be glad to do it,"
"PB?" Preet's mouth dropped open. "You'll take her side over mine?"
"No...I?" Prem frowned knowing he was stuck. No matter what he'd say, he'd make one of them mad. He caught Shabo's eyes and she nodded before winking at Prem.
"PREET!!!"
"What?" Preet frowned as he turned to face her, alarmed by the sudden outburst.
"I think....no I know! Gulab Jamuns! I smell them!" Shabo grinned as she sniffed the air.
"Shabz this is an American hospital, why would there be gulab jamuns?" Preet groaned.
"I don't know!" she frowned. "Let's find them before someone else does!"
"Oh jesus," He muttered before she dragged him out of the room letting Prem and Meera laugh over what just happened.
"He is so whipped," Prem commented.
"I know," Meera sighed. "Why couldn't you be more like him?"
"Because you," He leaned in to her forehead. "Love me just the way I am,"
"So true," Meera smiled back as he gave her a cheeky grin.
