"I'll be there in about 20 minutes okay?"
"I miss you."
"I miss you too,"
"You can't come sooner?" The guy pouted, making the girl on the other side of the phone laugh.
"Sorry Prem. I can't fly."
"You should Meera; it would make life so much easier."
"Yes, anyways'there's too much traffic, let me focus on driving."
"Fine. Bye." Prem slowly pressed the end key on his cell phone before turning back to the large bay window that overlooked the entire skyline.
He had been engaged with Meera for the past 5 months and their wedding was coming up in a month's time but today was the last day they'd be together until the wedding since Meera was going to India to do shopping for the wedding.
Prem slowly sat down on the couch and picked up his iPhone from the coffee table and scrolled through his business emails. The minutes were barely passing and nothing could hold his attention. He wanted one thing and that was to hold her in his arms. Feeling the way she fit perfectly against his chest. Inhaling the sweet scent of her perfume to last for the month till the wedding; he needed to be with her.
kehta hai dil tum aaoge
aa jaaon na kyon ho khade
"Why can't people drive faster?" Meera resisted the urge to hit the horn as she carefully swerved into the far right lane.
Meera glanced at the clock on the radio and sighed. Judging by how far she was from Prem's apartment she should be there within 10 more minutes but now it didn't seem like that was possible.
She looked down at her Blackberry and made a face. She had hoped to see a text from him but her inbox was empty.
She smiled involuntarily as she looked up at her reflection in the rear view mirror. Her eyes were shining back at her and she was surprised it made her feel and look just so happy and that was all because of Prem. She just knew it.
milte the jab hum kehte the
dil ka sakoon tum hi toh ho
Meera let out a squeal as her phone beeped twice. Miss Me?
She giggled as she held the steering wheel with one hand and preceded to text back her crazy fianc with the other.
You really should stop distracting me if you want me home in one piece
Two seconds later her phone beeped again and she groaned. Course I do, drive safely xx
Meera put her phone back down as she set her eyes back on the road. She made a turn onto her exit and drove in peace towards his apartment building.
aankhon se tum padh lete the
haal-e-dil jo bhi ho
"Kitni der?" Prem murmured as he paced the living room. His penthouse was beginning to look too big when he was sitting in it all by himself.
He sat down on the couch and jumped up almost instantly as the phone buzzed on the table. He grabbed it and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Hey PB."
"Hi Preet." Prem sighed. "What's up?"
"Nothing'what are your plans for dinner?" Preet asked.
"Preet'tu janta hain,"
"Kya bhaiyya?" Preet faked an innocent tone with his older brother.
"Preet," Prem threatened.
"Fine. I know it's bhabhi's last night in Chicago before flying to India; I promise not to interrupt."
"Good. I'll talk to you later," Prem sighed before touching the end button.

The moon was shining brightly now through the window and Prem was getting worried; nearly 45 minutes ago she had said she'd be here in 20 minutes. Without waiting another minute he dialed her number.
"Sorry baba, I'm like 5 minutes away." Her cheery voice greeted him.
Prem sighed. "Just making sure."
"What is THAT supposed to mean?" Meera asked before turning into the private parkade. "Are you very arrogantly implying that I'm not a good driver?"
"I don't have a death wish," Prem grinned.
"Didn't think so," Meera smiled as she parked the car in her visitor stall. "Dinner ready?"
"Chipotle is warm and ready to eat." Prem told her.
"I'm proud."
"You should be," Prem grinned as he laid out the food on the bar table.
Meera grinned as she got out of the car. "You're insane."
"But you love me?"
"Course." She twirled the keys in her hand.
"Just making sure."
"You doubt me?" she faked a shocked voice.
Prem shrugged, knowing she wouldn't see it. "It's not that, I just like hearing it."
"Kitna pyar hain,"
"Bahot." Prem smiled as he leaned his elbows on the counter.
Meera rolled her eyes before stepping into the lobby. "Anyways I'm in the building I'll be up in a bit."
"Can't wait," Prem hit the end key again and sighed before going over to his DVD cabinet.
Flicking through the stacks of them he found one he knew she'd enjoy.
chhod ke ghar chala jaaon kabhi
aankhon mein aansu na lana sanam
He was crazy and he knew it. Meera smiled at his stupid words as she made her way past the receptionist who waved.
She was about to press the button for the elevator when suddenly a hand reached out and grabbed her, pulling her around the corner.
"Say a word and you're dead," A menacing voice said to her.
Meera shut her eyes and did as she was told, cringing feeling the man's tight hold on her arm. All she wanted was to get away from this man and rush up to where Prem was waiting for her. They had their entire life in front of them.
Slowly she felt the man pushing her forward and her feet stumbled with the sudden movement. "Stand straight." He ordered.
She did as she was told and that was when she felt the gun being held to her temple. Her mouth dropped open when she saw a masked man standing in the dark hallway in front of her.
"Antonio. This is between us. We don't need an innocent involved."
"Sorry Marco, the minute you involved the police in our little deal'things changed." Antonio spat out.
Meera angled her head away from Antonio until he pulled her closer with her hair. Tears were streaming down her face now and her only thought was Prem. She didn't want to die, but even if she did, she was more worried about him. What he'd go through.
"Please, let me go." Meera pleaded with Antonio who snarled at her.
"Sorry girl. You're my ticket to getting out of her." He whispered. "See the man there" he pointed his gun briefly at Marco. "He betrayed me and now I need to escape. You get that right? So now be a doll and flow with it."
Meera glanced in Marco's direction and saw him frowning. Maybe he'd be able to help her. She tried moving away from Antonio again when he groaned. "Stop it. That's it. No more waiting, let's go." He pulled her towards the door, holding the gun still to her temple. "Nobody move, or I will shoot her!"
Everyone in the lobby jumped up when they saw a masked man in their apartment building.
"I need to get out now!" Antonio frowned. "You!" He pointed at the receptionist. "Call me a cab."
The receptionist nodded furiously fast before kicking the security button by her foot and then picking up the phone dialing a number.
"Hello?" Prem answered.
"Sir, please come to the lobby. There's'you need to come." The receptionist whispered before Antonio saw the security approaching him.
"STOP! I'll shoot her."
"Just quietly hand yourself over to the authorities." The head of security said softly.
"Fat chance," Antonio snarled before dragging Meera out the door with him.
Everything happened suddenly. Security aimed their guns at Antonio who froze. The head of security fired his gun at Antonio's knee. Suddenly overcome with pain, Antonio pulled the trigger on his gun, letting the bullet pierce Meera's stomach where the gun was aimed.
The world seemed to blur in her eyes as she fell to the ground. Her hand was suddenly pulled up and she struggled to keep her eyes open. Prem's images flood her mind and she muttered his name. "Prem?"
The receptionist who had grabbed Meera's arm screamed at her assistant. "Get Prem Juneja down her right away. His fianc..." She shook her head.
pyar se jab bhi yaad karoge
yaadon mein chala aaunga main sanam
Prem had no idea why Sophie, the receptionist would call him down so suddenly but he dismissed it as he stepped into the elevator; he'd find out soon enough.
The elevators doors opened moments later and even from around the corner he could hear the commotion in the lobby.
He almost ran to the lobby where he saw Sophie kneeled down on the cushioned bench in the lobby. Her face blocking the view someone sprawled out on the bench.
"Sophie?" He called out, unaware of why she had called him down here. Meera would be waiting upstairs for him by now.
"Prem..." she backed away letting him see the girl sprawled out on the bench.
"Meera.." his breath stuck in his throat as he took a step closer.
rasta kathan manzil nahi
phir bhi main kyon rukta nahi
"Wha'what happened?"
"That's not important," Sophie cried. "The ambulance is on it's way. But Prem, I don't think she'll mak'" Sophie moved away from Prem who kneeled down near Meera.
"Meera?" He whispered near her ear, the tears spilling from his eyes.
"Hey," She whispered back, her eyes opening softly. "I'm glad you're here."
He looked up and saw her wince in the pain. "Don't say anything please?"
Meera shook her head. "Don't be upset with anyone okay?" She sighed. "It was just a coincidence that it happened to me. Don't be mad please?"
Prem reluctantly nodded and took her hand in his. "I don't want to lose you."
"You'won't." She sighed. "Just remember the happy memories and live your life the way you should." She smiled before taking her engagement ring off. "Give this to someone Prem, promise me okay?"
Prem shook his head. "I will not promise that," He lightly kissed her forehead before letting his eyes wander over to where the blankets were blocking her wound. The blood was seeping through and the bright red color hurt his eyes. She couldn't be dying. They were getting married next month. They would be together for all eternity.
chup chup ho tum gumsum khade
aankhon mein hai pyar liye
"I love you," Meera murmured before letting her eyes close.
"No'stay with me." Prem pleaded. "Meera don't,"
"Prem..." her mouth froze and he dropped her hand.
This couldn't be happening today. None of it made any sense to him. They were going to have dinner in a few minutes upstairs and now she was gone? It wasn't possible. She had handed him her engagement ring and just gone. Gone without a second glance.
kehta hai dil tum aaoge
aa jaaon na kyon ho khade
She'd be back. He knew it for sure. Somehow he'd find her again in life. Right now her memories were enough for him to live with.

Love,
Meera
