Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Part Four
Meher glanced at the little digital clock that sat at her desk. It was 7.45p.m. and Preet still hadn't left. She tapped her fingers against the desk. There had to be some way to get Ashlesha and Preet together. There just had to.
No sooner had that thought passed, than the idea struck Meher. She smacked her forehead. She couldn't believe she hadn't thought of it sooner. She got up and hurried to Preet's office, knocking on the door.
"Preet Sir, aap ab tak nikaley nahin?" she asked, popping her head in.
Preet looked up at her, frowning. His brow relaxed a little as he saw that it was Meher. "Meher. Kaam pura nahin hua hai, toh main kaise jaaon?"
Meher frowned. "Lekin aapko 8.30 ke liye Ma Maison par dinner ke reservations hain!"
Preet frowned again. "Kya? Kiske saath?" He rifled through some of the papers on his desk, before remembering that he had handed all his Post-Its to Meher.
"Woh…Ashlesha Ma'am ke saath!" she answered, eyes wide and innocent.
Preet's frown deepened, changing into one of confusion. "Ashlesha ke saath? Lekin main Ash ke saath dinner par kyun jaaonga?"
Meher shrugged.
"Dikha do," Preet instructed her, holding his hand out for whatever proof Meher could give him.
"Ek minute," she said, and she withdrew from the door, closing it. "Ab main kya karoon?" she murmured, looking around with a slight panic. She returned to her desk and picked up Preet's organizer, flipping through the pages, hoping that somehow, inspiration would strike. And it did. She rolled her eyes. "Meher, tum bhi na…Sometimes you're really not the brightest tool in the shed," she chided herself.
She opened the organizer to the day's date, then waved her hand over it, smiling as the reservations wrote themselves in the book in her rotund handwriting. She returned to Preet's office and handed him the book.
Preet studied it. He looked up at Meher, still frowning. "Post-Its kahaan hai?" he asked.
"Woh toh maine kab se phaenk diye they!" she answered. "Jab maine organizer mein sab kuch transfer kar diya toh maine Post-Its phaenk liye!"
Preet sighed. "Ash ko bulaao."
Meher resisted the urge to make a face. Why couldn't he just accept that he had dinner plans with Ashlesha?
Instead, she put on a smile. "Ji, Sir."
Muttering to herself, she left the office and went in search of Ashlesha. She spotted her at her cubicle, turning off her computer.
"Ashlesha Ma'am, Preet Sir aapko bula rahey hain."
Ash nodded. "Usse kaho ki main do minute mein aa rahi hoon," she said without looking at Meher. She rummaged around in her bag with a frown on her face, one that disappeared as she pulled out a tube of lipstick. Meher watched, fascinated, as Ash held a mirror up to herself and applied the deep red colour to her lips.
Ash glanced at Meher, raising an eyebrow. "Jaao!"
Meher nodded and left, wondering why Ash had to use makeup when she was already so pretty.
She informed Preet that Ash was on her way and took a seat at her desk, shuffling around some papers. She smiled at Ash as the other woman breezed past her into Preet's office without even knocking. As the door closed, she hurried there, pressing her ear against it in an attempt to hear the conversation.

"Ash, hum dono ne aaj dinner ke plans banaye hai kya?" Preet asked, frowning slightly.
Ash stared at him, then burst out laughing. "Tum mazaak kar rahe ho, na? I've been trying to get you to go to dinner with me for years, aur ab tak tumne kabhi haan kiya hai kya?" she composed herself enough to say.
Preet rolled his eyes. "That's exactly what I was wondering," he muttered, turning away. "Lekin Meher keh rahi hai ki hume aaj Ma Maison mein dinner ke reservations hain." He glanced at his watch. "In thirty-five minutes."
"But I've got plans with the girls," Ash said, whisking out her Blackberry.
-||-
"Not if I have anything to do about it," Meher muttered to herself. She closed her eyes, murmuring something.
-||-
Right on cue her Blackberry beeped. She frowned as she read the text message. She wrinkled her nose.
"Wonderful," she groaned. "Jiya has food poisoning. Pura din fast food khati rehti hai, what else can she expect?" She looked up at Preet. "Well, I guess I'm free," she said with a shrug.
"Free or not, humne dinner ke liye plans nahin rakhe, na? That's all I want to know," Preet told her, hands in his pockets.
Rolling her eyes, Ashlesha checked her Blackberry.
-||-
"Can't You make things easier?" Meher hissed at the ceiling, hoping the god and goddess got her message. She prayed that her magic worked on smart phones.
-||-
Ash looked up at Preet in surprise. "According to this…we did have dinner plans for tonight!"
Preet stared at her incredulously. "We did?!"
-||-
Meher allowed herself a smug smile and a pat on the back.
-||-
Preet moved closer to Ash, taking her Blackberry from her even as she protested. He tapped random buttons. "Are you sure?!"
Ash snatched her Blackberry back, scowling at Preet. "Touch the Blackberry again and you're a dead man, Juneja. And the Blackberry is never wrong." She hugged the Blackberry. "I'm sorry, sweetie. I'll never let him manhandle you ever again, pakka!"
Preet rolled his eyes. "Apne Blackberry ko ek minute ke liye chodo, Ash," he said, earning himself another dirty look from her. "Does this mean we have to go for dinner together?"
Ash shrugged, carefully slipping her Blackberry back into her purse. "But you're paying."
Preet sighed. "Chalo."
-||-
Meher raced back to her seat as Preet and Ash emerged from the office.
Preet paused at her desk. She looked up at him, smiling. He cleared his throat.
"Meher, tum bhi ab ghar jaao," he told her.
Meher nodded. "Ji, sir."
As she stood up, she frowned. This was her first day on Earth. She didn't have a house.
Now what? she wondered.
