Part 17
"Chalo…" Prem whispered and got out of the car. Heer also got out and walked to his side. She hated the dark and she wanted to be close to him. Somehow, she felt really safe when she was near him. Prem noticed her fear and held onto her hand. A surprised Heer looked into his eyes and all her fear flew away. Prem and Heer started walking through a narrow path through the woods while holding onto each other's hands.
As the reached the end of the path, Prem stopped and looked at Heer. Heer looked at him as to see why he stopped. The soft moonlight had a great on their skin and the atmosphere so oh so romantic and quiet. Prem pointed out to something in the right direction. Heer followed to where he was pointing.
The sight she saw took her breath away. There she was, high above their entire city of Mumbai, looking at the city lights, the beautiful buildings, the lit up temples, the crowded but quiet streets, several ponds here and there, and the best part. From there, she was able to see the entire sky that was full of glittering stars. She had never seen such a beautiful view in her entire life.
Prem kept looking at the beautiful expressions on her face. Her sweet little smile and her amazement brought a smile to his face.
"I always come here when I am depressed." Prem said looking at her. Heer put her attention back onto her husband.
"But this is the first time I came here feeling as if I am on top of the world. And I am happy only because of you." His words came out in a husky and emotional tone. Prem brought up her hand that he was holding onto and gently grabbed it with both of his hands. Heer smiled at him and her eyes started to well up.
"You've done so much for me. I don't even know how to thank you." Prem said in a serious tone. Heer saw him getting sad so she decided to make him feel happy again. She put hand in front of him that not holding the pastry box.
"You know, you can thank me by sharing this with me." Heer saw a slight smile come on his face. Prem opened the small box. The pastries were in ultra thin strips and the flavor was strawberry. He chipped off and tiny piece and was about to feed it to her when she stopped him. He watched her as she gently ripped a piece of the small pastry and held it up to his mouth. They kindly fed each other and smiled through their welled-up eyes. They switched their view back to the city and soaked in the beautiful site. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. After sometime, Prem decided that it was too late and they both should head home. As they both walked back to their car in silence, their happiness on their faces made it known that a type of relationship between the two was being formed. Friendship seemed to be forming between the two lovers.
As they both walked down the street, Heer's eyes got caught by an old lady sitting on the street. She was very old and seemed pretty weak. Next to her was a little boy holding onto a basket full of beautiful, red bangles. Heer always helped poor people and she was about to make her way there when she saw Prem walk ahead of her. She stopped in her tracks and watched him walk up to them. She slowly followed behind and surprisingly watched him.
Prem went and bent down to become face to face with the old lady and the little boy. He gave them both a sweet smile.
"Namaste Sab. Sab aap chudiyaa kharidna chahenge?" asked the little boy innocently.
"Tum itni raat ko yaha kyu ho?" A concerned Prem asked the little boy.
"Who kya hai na, meri dadi ke liye kuch davai khareed ni hai. Uske liye hume paise chahiye. Issi liye hum dono raat se yeh bech kar paise ekutha kar rahe hai." The boy was so nave and polite.
Prem's eyes welled up after seeing him in this condition. He knows how much it hurts when you see someone you loved in pain. Prem took out his wallet and gave him his entire week's worth of salary to the little. He handed the little boy the money and then gave him his card which had his phone number on it.
"Aggar tumhe kissi bhi cheez ki zarurat ho toh mujhe keh deena. Theek hai." Prem patted the little boy's cheek. The boy was so happy but he didn't like to just take up all the money given to him.
Prem turned his attention to the lady who had tears in her eyes and a smile of her face. Prem smiled back at her and touched her feet to take her blessings. As he got up looked back to where was, he didn't spot her there. His heart quickly panicked when he didn't see her anywhere. But suddenly he heard her sweet voice.
"Yeh lo beta." Heer handed the little boy her box full of pastries. Prem quickly turned around and a sign of relief came on his face when he saw her talking to the little boy.
"Didi. Aap inke saath aaye ho na. Kya yeh aap ke pati hai?" asked the little boy as he was confused to who she was. Prem and Heer both looked at each other. He just stared at her wanting her to answer quickly. Heer looked at the little boy and answered.
"Haan. Yeh mere pati hai." Heer admitted proudly. A smile found its way onto Prem's face.
"Didi, inhone mujhe baahot zyada paise diye hai. Issi liye mai chata hu ke aap yeh chudiyaa lee jaaye. Dadi khete hai ke shadi shuda ladkiyo ke haath me red chudiyaa bahot acchi lagti hai." said the boy with a smile.
The old lady handed Heer the whole netted tokri full of red, maroon, and gold bangles. Heer smiled and held onto the tokri.
"Ek baat kahu didi?" asked the little boy to Heer.
"Haan." Heer answered.
"Aap dono saath me bahot acche lagte hai. Bhagwan aapko hamesha khush rakhe." said the little boy.
Hearing to what the little boy said, her eyes shot back to Prem and she found him grinning at her. She smile to him and got up after ruffling the little boy's hair.
They both headed to their car and after getting settled in the car, they headed back home. The whole car ride, Heer kept thinking about Prem's generosity and Prem kept thinking about how sweet she was to the little boy. Heer glanced at the colorful bangles. They were all so beautiful and the little boy's words kept ringing in his mind.
They finally reached home and after getting inside, Prem and Heer went to get changed. It was already past 1:00 am. Heer went into Prem's room to change into her simple blue, silk gown. Prem headed towards his mom's room and changed. After wearing a comfortable t-shirt and sweatpants, he decided to go to the kitchen to get a drink of water. He slowly made his way out of the room and went into the kitchen. He took a water bottle out of the fridge and started to pour the cold water into a glass. As he was doing so, he felt her presence around him. His heart was able to locate her soft heartbeats nearby. He turned around and finds out that he was right.
There stood Heer, dressed in a light blue colored t-shirt and matching pajamas.
"God she looks adorable" Prem thought.
He gave her a sweet smile. She returned him a smile but her nervousness didn't get unnoticed by Prem.
"Paani chahiye…?" Prem asked extending the glass of water to her. She nodded a "No."
Prem looked at her. He looked down at her hands and saw her clutching something. After seeing him look at it, she built up all her courage to speak. She extended the tiny box in front of him and spoke.
"Aaj jab mai Maya se milne gayi thi toh usne mujhe diya…" spoke out Heer in a very soft voice.
Prem looked at the box and took it. He opened the box and was really surprised to find a pendant full of diamonds which was carved in the shape of "PH." A slight smile came up on his face and he looked at Heer. She had her eyes lowered and when she felt his gaze on her, she started to explain.
"I told her that I couldn't take it. But she didn't listen to me. I don't know how to give it back to her. It feels really weird to have something that is not even for me." She looked at him and saw a confused look on his face.
"I don't know how to give it back to her. I just couldn't say no-" before she could finish her sentence, she found his warm fingers covering her mouth from saying anything further.
Heer looked straight into his eyes and she felt confused to see a slight smile on his face. She thought that he wouldn't like for her to take such an expensive gift from his friends but was she proven wrong.
"They gave it to you Heer." Prem looked deeply into her eyes. Her innocence and honesty was making him desire for her more then ever. "Why doesn't she ever think for herself? She's always worrying about how others will feel," thought a very confused Prem.
After finding the right words, he tried to remove that confused look on her face by answering the questions in her mind.
"Maya and Arjun consider you as a family member now. They gave it to you. That means that you have all the right to have it. And trust me, I will be more then happy to see you wear it. You don't have to feel bad for anything. I know that you will never do anything wrong. Just keep it Heer." Prem smirked at her and pulled away his fingers from her soft lips. Touching them brought a new desire in her heart. He got this sudden urge to feel them. And urge to kiss her. But keeping mind of his limits, he placed the tiny box back into her hand and backed off.
He pulled his attention back to the glass of water and extended it to her.
"You seemed so scared to tell me that. Did you think I was going to be mad? Here just have a drink." Prem grinned to her.
First of all, she was madly in love with him in the first place for who he really is. Secondly, seeing him being nice to the poor lady and her grandson was making her love him as much as eternity. Thirdly, this goody-goodness was making her want to hug him tightly and never ever let go. And lastly, his touch, his feather-like gentle touch on her lips was making her want to be touched by him, kissed by him, loved by him. "Earth to Heer Mann. Stop fantasying!" Heer thought.
She took the glass of water and brought it closer to her lips to have a sip. But what he said next made her stop and elevate her lowered eyes to look at him.
"I want this gift to stay with you forever. At least it will remind you of me when you won't be here anymore." Prem said in a low tone. But the very next second he said that, he regretted of having his tongue slip. He looked at her. She was holding onto the glass and looking at him. He didn't know what those eyes were saying. But he didn't miss the watery crystal that were welling her eyes up. He felt his heart being clenched tightly by a force called guilt. He just made her cry. But why was she at the verge of tears in the first place? He thought.
He tried to move forward to console her but she just put down the glass and left the kitchen. Seeing her leave in tears, he got confused. "Now why is she crying? Did I say something that I wasn't supposed to? All I said was…." And that's when he realized.
