PART ELEVEN
This was the first time something like this was happening to him. Incapable of concentrating on the book, he pushed it inside his rucksack and got up to leave the library. As he walked down the corridor, thoughts of Heer seemed to incessantly occupy his mind, which he not only found extremely disturbing but in a strange way also very heartening.
He jumped up at the sound of the bell blaring for the students to get to their classes. Straightening up, he trotted to class, paying little attention to the taunts of some students he happened to pass by. Entering the classroom his eyes involuntarily fell on her. There she was, sitting between Shifali and Asma. She was there but at the same time seemed distant to her surroundings.
Heer looked up simultaneously, and their eyes met. She gazed at him unblinkingly. Feeling uncomfortable, Prem swiftly looked down- his eyes wondered vaguely around the room, trying to avoid contact with hers. Seeing Meera waving at him, he nodded his head and came back to his senses.
Shifting in the seat next to Meera, he gave her one of his small yet sweet smiles, and mechanically took out his books and stationary- carefully carrying out his routine of placing his pens and pencils neatly on the desk and putting the books together, he turned to see Meera giggling.
'Is it really necessary to lay out each pen and pencil carefully, one centimetre apart from each other?' she said through her chuckles.
Prem shrugged in defence of his act. 'Yes it is- I like being organised' he said simply. Meera shook her head and sighed. 'He is never going to change', she thought.
Clearing his throat, Prem made the decision to ask for Meera's opinion. 'Meera- you know me well right?' he started.
'Prem- what kind of question is that? Of course I know you well!' said Meera.
'Well, hypothetically-say I had a problem? Would it be right to listen to my head or to my heart?'
'The logical answer to that would be to listen to your head, as you are so smart, so whatever choice you will make would be right. But you are asking me, Meera- the big softie! So obviously I will tell you to listen to your heart.' Maura furrowed her brows, wondering why Prem felt the need to ask her such a question. 'Why?' she prodded.
'No, it was just a random question!' responded Prem. Meera was not convinced and decided to press the matter. Smiling to herself she leaned forward.
'I know why you asked me that!' she announced. Prem looked up abruptly. 'Are you going to ask her?' Meera asked him.
'Ask her what?' Prem replied, a feeling of uneasiness spreading through his body.
'You know what I am talking about. Are you going to ask her to the ball?!' she whispered.
'What?! Why...why would I ask her to the ball?!!' said Prem, shaking his head and diverting his eyes from Meera. 'Why would I ask Heer to the ball?' he thought, dismissing the idea completely. Meera's touch on his arm brought Prem to his senses.
'Are you even listening to me Prem?' asked Meera, and smiled as he gently nodded in reply. 'So, like I was saying- when are you going to ask Ravz to the ball?' she continued. Prem's head shot up once more.
'Oh yeah- Ravz! That...ummm...I told you that I would think about it Meera' he mumbled. Meera shook her head.
'If you are afraid that Ravz is going to refuse you...'
'No- it's nothing like that' Prem cut in, 'I just need more time to think about it' he said.
'How long does it take to make a simple decision Prem? Like I said, follow your heart!' said Meera, leaving Prem to ponder over her words. A simple decision- that is what he had to make. Yet, the decision he was thinking of had no connection to the ball whatsoever- the only thing on his mind that very moment was Heer Mann. It was the decision regarding Heer that was itching away at his heart the most. He was still unsure about her- either she really was a stuck-up Barbie doll, or she was really good at hiding her true self.
Okay, that was all for today, hope it met your expections, I really had no clue what to write at first, this just kind of came to me randomly!! Can't wait to read comments!!
