Anil Merani Ekta Kapoor's serial Khwaish that is being produced and aired on Pakistan TV is now telecast on Indian television. A report... alaji Telefilms has got the distinction of being the first Indian production house to make a serial for Pakistan television, (PTV). Khwaish which is around 15-20 episodes old across the border will now air in India on Sony from July 16 on the 7.30 pm slot. Khwaish is a story of two Indian Muslim families settled in the beautiful desert city of Dubai. It talks about the love between Afreen (Priya Ashok Bathija) and Kabir(Sumeet Sachdev). Both get married and seem to be living a very contented life, until tragedy strikes and Afreen is forced to marry Kabir's younger brother, Azaan. Ekta Kapoor said at the launch press conference "I have always been attacked for not doing a Muslim social. Hope this beautiful venture satisfies my critics at least on this point." Sumit Sachdev who is a part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ( yes, Gomzi is back) and had earlier done Karam Apna Apna is quite happy with this new role. He says "Kabir is a very positive character (calm, simple and down-to-earth) and quite similar to me. I play the dashing foreign returned elder son of Shanawaz (Indraneel Bhattacharya) and Zarin Khan(Anju Mahendru)." This architect turned actor does not have any problems playing a Pakistani, "We share a similar culture, don't we? The female lead, Priya was first seen in a small role in Kyunki... as KT's friend. Nivedita Basu, creative head, Balaji Telefilms said, "This is in keeping with the Balaji tradition of choosing news leads from the pool of actors who have done smaller roles in our other shows." Ekta added that they deliberately did not choose somebody established because she might not have had the time to go to Dubai for long schedules. Priya described Afreen as a kind-hearted girl, who can never see others in pain "My, character is very supportive to her family and is looked upon as the 'son' to her father, Hadi (Ragesh Banwarilal Asthanaa)," she explained. The third peg of this triangle, Azan is played by Pakistani actor and model, Yasir Shah. The production house has deliberately not taken major Pakistani TV stars for the role because according to Nivedita Basu, "Pakistani actors are few in number and they will not be able to find time for a daily like Khwaish". "Even the Dubai unit of Balaji is in-house, for we are more comfortable with someone who knows our style of working" said Basu. | < = src="http://banners.expressindia.com/banner/screen/si_story300x250.js"> < = src="http://banners.expressindia.com/adsnew/adjs.php?para=no&n=320008355&what=zone:574&target=_blank&exclude=," =text/> | When asked to comment on the 7.30 pm time slot Ekta said, " It was the perfect time for house wives in smaller town and cities to watch the show. People in such places are off to bed by 10 pm." Being a Muslim social, Khwaish will be in Urdu and Balaji has taken special care to make sure that this beautiful language is presented correctly on screen. A special tutor has been appointed who will oversee the shooting to prevent any bloomers. Khwaish will be the Muslim counterpart of the K shows with a lot of religious symbolism. Ramzan and Bakri Idd will be celebrated with pomp and gaiety. "However given the delicate political situation between the two countries, no controversial topic will be dealt with," stressed Ekta. As for the costumes which the Balaji shows are known for Nivedita said, "Since this show is about a modern Muslim family, Afreen will not be shown in a burqa, but if she goes to a mosque, she will surely wear one". Priya added that her character will always be dressed in beautiful, yet simple outfits. When asked as to what the response has been to the show in Pakistan, Ekta quipped that it was too early to comment as the TRP system there is not as advanced as in India and so it would take some time for the ratings to be out". However the queen of Indian soaps was confident that Khwaish will be a major hit, for Indian shows are a big rage there any way. "Pakistani viewers will now have a chance to see legitimate Indian programmes, which otherwise ran rather through illegal means." Nivedita added that the influence and power of our soaps can be judged by the fact that purely Indian stuff like the bindi and saree have become very popular in Pakistan, post satellite invasion. Though the serial is based in Pakistan, it has been shot in Dubai as Indian production houses are banned from shooting in Pakistan. Like all other Balaji presentations, this show is also being shot on an elaborate scale, with a lot of out door locations. As for the story, Ekta promises "A major twist in the story around the 30th episode. The initial episodes will be used to connect the characters with the audiences." |
