No, Ayesha is pretty cool in this FF, actually all the parents are. Any problems Payal and Karan have are of their own making. 😊 Thank you.

Part 7
"Can I see Jitesh Gowariker's files?", asked Dr Singh. Riley handed him the files. After his night out with Karan, he had been an hour late for work but thankfully, the nurses had covered for him and he had made it in before Dr Singh could storm in for his weekly fault-finding session. Dr Singh was dubious of Riley to say the least. A rich, pretty boy playing at being doctor. He was just waiting for the opportunity to cut Riley down to size. But infuriatingly the boy just seemed to sail through life. He had finished in the top 5 of his class, he rarely cracked under the pressure during his internship and now qualified, he was adored by his patients and respected by his colleagues. "Hmmph, everything seems to be in order.", Dr Singh grudgingly admitted. Riley was aware of Dr Singh antagonism of him but it amused him more than anything else. Riley's first priority was his patients and as long as he did what was best for them, he didn't need his bosses' approval. But then as some of his college friends had pointed out, with the Shah millions to fall back on, he could afford to work for passion alone. Unlike, the rest of them, who had to work first and foremost to make a living and that meant worrying about what their superiors thought.

He smiled when he saw Vani at the doorway. But one sight of Dr Singh and she was ready to turn on her heels and flee. Vani was someone else, who, Dr Singh had problems with. A Malaysian, she had somehow managed to wrangle a position in the audiology department. He couldn't help but be sceptical of her qualifications and competency, something Vani was aware of. But she was too late, Dr Singh had spotted her, "What are you doing here? This is not the audiology department, the last time I looked.", said Dr Singh. Riley quickly stood up, he could easily handle Dr Singh's bullying but Vani looked so intimadated. "Dr Singh, I think Vani ...", Riley started to say quite forcefully but he was interrupted by Vani. "I'm here to get Dr Mishra's signature on these reports.", replied Vani quietly. Riley was impressed, she still looked a bit scared but at least she had found her voice. Dr Singh ignored her and turned his attention back to Riley, "I want a full report on the Kumar case by the end of the week.", he said before leaving. As soon as Dr Singh turned his back, Riley held his throat with both his hands, stuck out his tongue and did a pretty good impersonation of choking. Vani was torn between laughter and alarm that he would be caught. Sure enough, Dr Singh turned around but Riley managed to plaster a friendly smile on his face in time and wave at him.

"Man, does he get out of the wrong side of the bed every day?", asked Riley. Vani just heaved a sigh of relief that he was out of the room. "Hey, don't let him bug you.", said Riley. Vani smiled slightly, "Sorry to disturb you but I really do need your signature on these reports for yesterday's session.". Riley looked over the reports and started signing, "So, more drawing classes on Monday?". Vani nodded, "But we're also have to start involving Mr & Mrs Patel. We got to show them, Anya is making some progress, even if it's not quickly as they like". "Poor kid. She needs patience and understanding, not more pressure.", said Riley, though showing a bit of impatience himself, towards Anya's aunt and uncle. "I know but sometimes ...", said Vani heistantly. "Sometimes what?", asked Riley. "Sometimes the family also needs patience and understanding. It's equally difficult for them.", said Vani carefully. Riley looked at her questioningly. He felt there was something more to her words. "My brother is partially hearing impaired.", Vani finally explained. Riley looked at her with new found respect, "That must have gave you a really strong reason for becoming a therapist.". "It did, especially since where we lived, my brother didn't always have access to the best care and help.", said Vani. She couldn't believe she was confiding so much in Riley, she rarely spoke about this to any one.

"So, why did you become a doctor?", asked Vani, wanting to change the subject. Riley suddenly felt uncomfortable. His reasons were far from noble and compelling as Vani's. He grew up his entire life with everyone expecting him to follow his grandfather's and father's footsteps and run Shah Enterprises one day. But that expectation had left him feeling suffocated and burdened, added to the fact business really didn't interest him. In school, while he topped his class in anything relating to science, business and economic studies just left him cold. The turning point came in high school. Payal should love going to the office with her father on weekends and Milind came to expect Riley to also go along. As a way to avoid the office, Riley started volunteering at the very same hospital, he was now a doctor at. To his surprise, he found his calling in life. With his love for science and personality, medicine was a perfect fit. It took him a while to work up the courage to admit to his father that he had no intention of going into the business world but with much support from Payal and Karan, he managed to finally do it. Milind had been understandably disappointed but over time he came to respect Riley's decision. But Riley didn't feel like admitting to Vani, that he was a rich boy who became a doctor simply because he didn't want to take over running his families' vast business empire. "I liked science.", said Riley as truthfully as he could. Vani smiled but Riley suddenly realised how lucky he was but maybe it was time to do something more in life.

Part 8
Kirti and Payal quickly ran from the car into the house to avoid the rain. It was a cold, wet Friday afternoon and Payal was looking forward to a quiet weekend after an exhausting week. But as soon as she entered the house, she could hear the air turn blue with profanities and gun shots. Karan and Riley were watching 'The Departed'. "How can your'll watch this?", asked Payal, wincing as Leonardo Di Caprio was being beaten up on screen. "Oooh, poor Leo.", said Kirti. "Just because that pretty boy is being beaten up, doesn't make it a bad movie. Actually, it makes it quite a good movie.", replied Riley. "I hate to tell you this but I know of some girls who consider you quite pretty.", laughed Payal. "Urghh, that's not me, that's Karan.", said Riley. Payal and Karan looked at each other and Payal quickly looked away. Payal knew of girls who considered Karan more than just pretty. Six years ago, hot, gorgeous, sexy, were some of the adjectives, her friends used to use to describe Karan, much to Payal's amusement. Pointing out that he was barely twenty at the time and somewhat her cousin, had no effect on them. Payal wondered what her friends will say about this much older Karan. A Karan, that Payal, for the first time, could actually see what the fuss was about.

Payal showered and came back downstairs. She had changed out of her brown business suit into jeans and a pale blue sweater. She looked soft and warm. Karan wished Kirti and Riley would simply vanish and he could pull her into his arms and cuddle with her on the sofa, well actually do a lot more than cuddle ... "Is something in my hair?", asked Payal confusedly, touching her head on seeing Karan looking at her. Karan snapped out of it, just glad she thought he was staring at her hair and nothing more. "No,", he replied and quickly turned his attention back to the screen. "Anyone want popcorn?", asked Payal, suddenly feeling awkward as Matt Damon and his girlfriend kissed on screen. "Yes!", replied Kirti and Riley quickly. Karan followed her into the kitchen.

"So, 2 days back, how does it feel?", asked Payal as she turned on the stove. "Okay, not bad, it's been good spending some time with my parents.", replied Karan, as he leaned against a counter. "They really missed you. Still got jet lag?", asked Payal with a smile. "No, I've adjusted now.", replied Karan. "And to everything else? Mumbai has changed so much in just the last 2 years.", said Payal as she opened a packet of popcorn seeds. "It's still home.", said Karan. "So, not missing New York?", asked Payal. "Somethings but I belong here.", said Karan firmly. "There is no place like home but I think you first have to go away to realise that.", said Payal. "Like you did in London?", asked Karan cautiously, knowing he could be hitting a nerve. Payal paused for a second before replying carefully, "You know better than anyone how difficult I first found it there." Karan did know through all the emails they sent each other during her first few months there, something they never spoke about face to face. "But you eventually settled down.", he said, thinking about how much she happier, she seemed, though he didn't know it at the time, when she met Mark Kingston. But she surprised him when she said, "Thanks, I never got a chance to tell you this but all your emails, really helped me during that time." Payal felt relieved, for years she felt as if she ought to thank Karan, for all his support during one of the most difficult times in her life, she wasn't even thinking about her ex-fiancee at that moment. An awkward, intense silence descended over the kitchen, as they looked at each other across the room, unsure what to say next. Pop,pop, pop.. They both jumped and then burst out laughing when they realised the popcorn had started to cook. Karan was particularly glad for the distraction. He had been dangerously close to kissing her or doing something equally stupid. He knew if Payal got even an inkling of his feelings, she would shut him out completely. He couldn't allow that to happen.

Karan and Payal returned back to the living room, with the popcorn. "No salt?", asked Riley. Payal sighed, "I'll get it.". "Your mum still bugging you about the party?", asked Kirti. Karan grimaced, "I managed to make her hold off for this week but I don't know for how much longer I can.". "Aww, she just wants you to meet some people your own age.", said Kirti. "But I'm more likely to do that at one of those insane pool parties we should have here than a formal dinner at home.", said Karan. "But that's what we should do.", said Riley suddenly. "What, have a pool party? It's been years since we had one.", said Kirti excitedly. "Yeah, we could invite some friends from college who we haven't seen in a while.", said Riley. "And Kiran, Shaina and I could invite some of our friends and in this way Aunt Ayesha won't be able to force you to have a party at home.", said Kirti. "Well, I'm all for that but Payal will never agree.", said Karan, though he was warming up to the idea. "Payal would never agree to what?", asked Payal entering the room again. "We were thinking about having a pool party but you'll never agree to something like that.", said Riley, a tad bit too innocently."Yeah, it's a bit too childish and immature for you.", said Kirti, taking her cue from Riley. "It would have fun but I guess those days are long gone.", said Karan, seemingly equally guileless. Payal knew they were baiting her. She was suddenly back to being 15 and the eldest of the lot, having to be the voice of reason when they all wanted to do something stupid while they were daring her to prove she was one of them. But Payal suddenly felt reckless, "Go ahead have your party."

OH MY GOODNESS...BC...I apologise...I missed like 3 updates...I'm kicking myself but am also glad...got to read all of them together and LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT 😉

I'm just loving Payal and Karan and yes, I know I've told you that before...but the attraction between them is papable... 😳 😉 it's hottttttttt

Actually to be honest, I didn't even notice their age difference..it's only a few years right...my parents are the same...but I'm liking it even more because of it...my guess would be that Karan will get extremely fustrated by Payal's big "sis" act soon...

Vani and Riley are also brilliant but in a different way, they're cuter and more adorable...

I just love the way you're shaping this...cannot wait for the next update...

Hey,
love this story. I like the Karan-Payal angle a lot and the way you potray it seems to capture the situation so realistically--Karan getting fed up of Payal's big sis act and Payal's attraction towards him. Love it.
Riley and Vani are a tad different. Dont know much about Vani to comment though, like I feel I know Riley's character well but vani is still someone I just met so cant say much about her. Although must admit you cant miss the vibes between them 😉
Looking forward to the next update.

Thank you, it's only 2 years. Doesn't make a difference in terms of their compatibility or maturity or life experience, it's just a stumbling block in how Payal sees him.

Yeah, Vani and Riley are a lot more innocent but actually their problems are going to be a lot more complicated than Payal & Karan's. Lets just say there is a huge difference in their backgrounds. Thank you again. 😊

Part 9
5:00 pm
"Can I help you?", Payal asked the stranger at the door. "Yeah, is Riley here? I heard this is where the party is?", said the overexcited young man. "Sanjay!", said Riley hugging the stranger. "Ryle, so good to see you.", replied Sanjay. "Come on in.", said Riley. "Wait, I brought a few friends, hope you don't mind.", said Sanjay. "The more, the merrier.", said Riley cheerfully. And before, Payal could even say a word, five other young men stormed into the house. "Riley, do you know these people?", whispered Payal. "No, but they are Sanjay's friends. I'm sure they're fine.", said Riley unconcernedly. Payal was dubious.

6:30pm
Payal had just returned back home from the store, after buying more snacks to find her living room invaded by a gaggle of college girls. "Oooh, change it back to MTV, I want to see the Chris Brown video.", said one. Another girl, tall, slim and wearing a pink mini skirt and white top came up to Payal. Payal felt almost middle-aged in comparison in her comfortable jeans and t-shirt. "Do you have a GHD?", asked the admittedly stunning girl. "A what?", asked Payal. "A GHD, a hair straightener, with your hair, I'm sure you must be having one.", said the girl. Payal looked at her incredulously. "Nisha, Nisha, Payal doesn't have one.", said Kirti, quickly intervening. Payal grabbed Kirti by her arm and pulled her one side, "Who are all these people?". "Just friends of mine and Kiran's from college. Riley said we could invite whoever we wanted to.", said Kirti. "Really!", said Payal.

8:00pm
Payal was mopping the kitchen floor. "Hey sweetie, it's a party. You meant to be having fun, not doing housework.", said Shaina, coming in with Ashok. Payal glared at her. By now Payal had lost track of how many people were at the party. A steady stream of Riley's friends from college, from work, Karan's old friends, and Kirti and Kiran's friends had been arriving for the last hour. Most of them, tracking wet footprints all over the kitchen floor, as they came out of the pool. The music was unbelieveably loud, Payal only hoped none of the neighbours complained. "Can I help?", asked Kiran sympathetically. "Yes, could someone, please do something about that living room?", asked Payal, "I should have known this was a bad idea.". "Aren't any of your friends here?", asked Shaina. "No, my friends are married with kids. They have better things to do with their time, unlike me it seems.", said Payal.

8:30pm
"Riley, more people just arrived. This is getting out of hand.", said Payal furiously. "Don't worry sis, every one is having a good time.", said Riley. Well, they certainly were. College girls mixed up with hardworking, stressed out medical professionals looking to blow of some steam, made for one raucous party, noted Payal. "Riley, what are they doing with Mum's pot plants?!", asked Payal. "I think they are trying to set it afloat on the pool. I better go stop them.", said Riley, laughing. "Relax Payal, it's going to be fine.", laughed Kiran. "Where is your cousin, who is supposed to be the guest of honour?", asked Payal, irritably. "I don't know, he said he'll be here later.", said Kiran shrugging, "By the way, aren't Uncle Milind and Aunt Prachi coming back tomorrow?"

9:15 pm
Payal had just paid for the fourth order of pizza, when she noticed Karan standing outside by the pool. Unlike Riley, who was wearing Hawian print shorts, Karan had on a golf t-shirt and jeans. And unlike Riley and his friends who were having a diving contest to see who could make the biggest splash, Karan was standing to one side and talking to someone. Payal took a closer look at who he was talking to. It was Nisha! "Hi, Payal.", said Karan greeting her. For the second time that day, Payal found herself comparing herself to that 21 year old college girl. Nisha still looked stunning in her pink and white oufit, hair still immaculately smooth and straight, make-up perfect. Payal was suddenly conscious that her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail and there was a stain on her t-shirt from pizza sauce. Karan just wanted to scoop in his arms and carry her upstairs away from this maddening crowd but he knew he had to stick to listening to Nisha's conversation about fashion school and Daddy's new car and did she mention something about a hair straightener?

10:20 pm
Payal tried to blow the curls of her face that had escaped from her ponytail as she scrubbed the carpet. Red wine had fallen on the carpet, "Where are you going with that? You're going to bloody electrocute yourself", she exclaimed as she saw one of Riley's college buddies walk out with a lamp to the pool. Riley was busy singing Queen songs on the karoke. The party was completely out of control. Karan stifled his laughter at the sight of Payal fighting over a lamp shade with one of Riley's friends with yellow cleaning gloves on. "We're leaving.", interrupted Karan as he stood with Nisha. "What?!This party was for you.", said Payal, as she let go of the lamp shade. "Well, I think Riley's friends have taken over.", said Karan, "Anyway, Nisha wants me to see her dad's new Mezzarati.". "It came from Italy.", said Nisha wid eyed. "Where the hell else would it come from?", snapped Payal. This time Karan couldn't stop himself from laughing but all it did was earn him a murderous look from Payal. "Well, I guess I'll see you on Monday.", said Karan as he left with Nisha. As he went out the door, he could hear Payal yell, "Put that down.",as someone tried to make off with her mother's ming vase.
