CHAPTER - 1
She smiled as she gazed into the mirror, satisfied with the way the elegant peach day gown enhanced the paleness of her skin and brought out the pink tinge in her cheeks. She was beautiful. She knew it.
Her light gray eyes hardened as she remembered what her father had told her yesterday. She was to marry the Prince of Saharan with all haste. The Prince of Saharan! She didn't even know the man for God's sake! Neither had she been allowed to meet with him before this marriage took place. She hadn't even heard of the mention of his name in the names of the most influential Princes. And she was to marry him! Hah!
"Ayesha?" came the hesitant voice of her sister from the doorway.
She forced her eyes to soften before she turned. They were too expressive; they would give away her thoughts and her feelings in a second if she wasn't careful. They could be warm and filled with an inner glow when she was happy but could also resemble hardened steel when she was annoyed or just upset.
"Mujhe...Papa ne bitaya...ki tumhari shaadi..." her younger sister trailed away at the look of pure fury filling up her eyes once again. With a sigh, Prachi closed the door and sat on the large bed in front of her sister. "Mujhe pata tha ki tum gusse mein hogi... and I know that you wanted to marry someone really grand and special."
"Yes!" Ayesha bit out from between her teeth. "But kisi ko meri wishes se kya farak padhta hai? Kisi ko kya farak padhta hai ki jis insan se meri shaadi hogi , main usse janti tak nahi...kabhi dekha tak nahi! And jahan tak mujhe pata hai he isn't even famous! He isn't known for anything! He's not special!"
At the look of understanding on her sister's face, she turned away before she did something as stupid as hit her. It was all because of her! Why couldn't she have been the elder one? She would have married whomsoever their father chose without a complaint with that holier-than-thou attitude of hers! Prachi loved her, she knew that, but then there were very few people whom her sister did not love. She was her father's favourite, she had known that throughout her life. Oh, it wasn't that their father didn't treat them both equally, but it was a feeling that had taken root in her heart during her childhood and wouldn't go away. It didn't help that she was illegitimate while Prachi was the legitimate child.
That thought still infuriated her! She - Ayesha, reputed as being the most beautiful woman in the whole of her kingdom and the neighbouring kingdoms too was illegitimate! Her mother had been a maid who had been known for her beauty and charm throughout the whole of the village and who, her pious father had loved secretly. And she was the result of the union that had taken place one night due to drunkenness on her father's part. He had regretted it instantly and had put her in a luxurious mansion on the outskirts of the kingdom and later when he came to know she was pregnant, he had been ecstatic as his own wife had been unable to conceive. It was a wonder the queen had accepted her as her own child when she had come to know after her own mother's death while giving birth to her. But she had and Ayesha would forever be grateful to her for claiming her as her own child and not making the stamp of illegitimacy become a known fact to all.
But that gratitude did not extend to Prachi who seemed to have inherited her mother's gentle demeanor and policy of duty over preference. She had begun to hate her so much that it was all she could do to stand her presence or to even look at her and that hate had increased a hundredfold when her father had told her what he considered her duty - to marry the Prince of Saharan! She had thought she was fortunate to be born with such good looks. How was she to have known they would one day be her downfall? She had dreamt of marrying a handsome Prince who had a chance of becoming King one day. She had dreamt of being worshipped, adored, cherished by a man she desired to have for a husband.
Her father was desirous of an alliance between the Shahs and the Shergills - who had been enemies since the day she had been born as the King of Saharan, who had been an esteemed friend of her father's and one of the few who knew the circumstances of her birth, had condemned the acceptance of Ayesha as a Princess instead of merely a serf's daughter. Now, after the death of his loving wife, he had mellowed considerably and considered the enmity between the families a hindrance which he could certainly do without.
What gall the man had! To offer his youngest son who had no hope of becoming King to her! She couldn't, she wouldn't marry him if she could help it. But how could she prevent this from happening? There was no way she could run away! It would ruin her chances of finding a suitable husband for good however beautiful she may be and would bring shame on her so-called family and though she didn't care two hoots for her father and her sister, she did care about her step mother - the queen and Prachi's mother who had never been anything but kind to her. Who had held her when she had been frightened of the storms and soothed her when she had fallen and got hurt. No, she could not run away...
Then...Prachi! Her eyes lit up as they always did when a plan formed in her mind...Prachi.
She turned suddenly in excitement. "Prachi! Uth!" she almost screamed.
Prachi jumped in surprise and stood up slowly and warily, noting the gleam in Ayesha's eye that had always spoken as trouble for her. Ayesha put her hands on her shoulder from behind and turned her towards the mirror, scrutinizing her features minutely in the mirror.
Prachi wasn't as beautiful as her, but she was pretty with grace in every line of her body and the ancient Shah charm and innocence etched in every feature of her face. She had large dark brown eyes, quite like melting chocolate as Ayesha sometimes thought and they certainly had the tendency to make a person feel as if she could look into their very soul which was mainly the reason, Ayesha avoided looking into them as much as possible. They made her feel vulnerable, her eyes were just too knowing for her peace of mind!
She had full pink lips and flawless skin with an olive tone which seemed to glow and her hair was long. They often reminded Ayesha of a black river, the way they gleamed in the sunlight. Looking at her profile in the mirror, Ayesha was well satisfied. Prachi was ethereal, she would suit the Prince better than her.
