Part – 16
Milind had his eyes closed as he leaned over the tiles as water cascaded down on his wet hair and slick body. His thoughts were meandering towards prachi again. It had become a constant companion the last couple of years. Thinking and repenting his actions had become such a part and parcel of his life that he did not know how to function without her in his thoughts.
His ripped muscles were glistening with droplets as he stood still against the jet spray that pounded his back. Neither the needles pricks nor the hot steamy water bothered him. His wounds were just too deep that nothing bothered him anymore. He did not care if got burnt from the heat of the water. All thought about was his family and how to get them back. He stood in the glass enclosed shower stall as steam evaporated all around him. He pushed his slick wavy hair back as he stood motionless and thought about Prachi yet again.
Milind knew that he couldn't and wouldn't let go of her. He was kidding himself if he even for a second thought that he would be able to let go and live in peace. He wanted her in his life. Yes! He wanted her back in his life but he also wanted the love that she had for him…back.
Thoughts of their encounter from yesterday night assailed him. He was still grappling and trying to come to terms with the sudden feelings she had conjured in him yesterday night when their hands had accidentally brushed each other.
The squeal of laughter and two chubby hands holding on to his knees bought Milind out of his revere as turned his head suddenly turned in shocked surprised to the intrusion. Milind looked down in utter shock and disbelief and was surprised to see the round chubby face of his son staring right back at him.
His shock immediately gave away to a huge smile, seeing his son standing behind him in nothing but diapers. The soggy diaper was drunkenly hanging from his bottom like dead weight as Milind watched his son's mischievous toothy grin.
His heart lurched watching Rithwick with a huge naughty grin on his face. Rithwick was standing behind Milind in the shower stall and enjoying the water falling from his father's body. It always surprised Milind whenever he watched his son. Rithwick was the mirror image of him. His hands automatically went down to caress his son's head. Rithwick's face was turned up towards him as he watched his dad with a gleeful smile.
Milind knew that his son was up to mischief. His heart lurched seeing their son watching him with rapt attention and a twinkle in his eyes. Milind immediately bent down and picked up his son in his hands. Holding Rithwick, he removed the soggy diapers away and threw out into the trash bin in the bathroom. That earned him a big hug as Rithwick held on to his father's neck tightly as the water cascaded down his naked back.
After a few minutes of playing with his son in the shower, both of them stepped out of the stall. Milind held his son's hand while he pulled the towel from the railing and wrapped it around his torso.
Picking up another snowy white towel he wrapped it around his son's body and held him tightly not allowing him to wriggle out of his hands. But the slippery little fellow would not stay quiet in his father's arm. He squealed as his father tried to wipe the water away from his son's unruly curls as they both walked out of the bathroom.
Meanwhile, Prachi was almost on the verge of tears. Her son was missing and she couldn't find him anywhere in the vicinity. She had given Rithwick his milk as soon as he had woken up. After watching her son finish up the bottle she had proceeded to remove his nightdress to change his diapers. Rithwick was sitting in his wet diapers when she had realized that she had forgotten to get a fresh one from the bathroom. Leaving her son to play in their room she had gone inside the bathroom to get a new one.
When she had returned her son was nowhere to be seen. Prachi had looked around every nook and corner thinking that he was playing peek-a-boo with her but it had all been in vain. She had rushed down to the ground floor expecting to find him there but it was a futile attempt. Her son had gone missing! The unthinkable had happened. Several drastic scenarios played out in her mind and tears started to form in her eyes. She had rushed up again shouting his name once more...."Rithwick! Beta!! Kahan hey aap!" she hollered as she rushed around every room calling out for her beloved son.
Panic was setting in and she was about to go and finally knock on the one door she had not yet knocked when she heard her son's laughter from inside the closed door. Without thought she pushed the door open and entered into the inner sanctum of Milind's room. What caught her eye made her stop her stride in midway as shock gave away to do belated embarrassment.
Both father and son were standing near the bed with white towels wrapped around their torsos. Rithwick was clinging to his father's neck while Milind was struggling to make Rithwick stand still on the bed. Prachi's heart gave a painful lurch at their bonding. But she immediately looked away and tried to concentrate her focus on her son.
Sensing her presence, two sets of identical brown eyes looked up at her one with question in them and one with laughter.
"Rithwick!!! Mama ne kaha Na…that you should not to go away from the room???…." With a question and a slight irritation in her voice she came forward to take her son away from Milind's bedroom. After her initial shock of seeing both of them in their towels she had decided to ignore Milind completely. But it was difficultly said than done. Her son had different ideas. He got down from the bed and hid behind Milind's back not wanting to leave Milind's side.
Prachi stood there not knowing what to do. She wanted to go and grab her son and walk out of there and not bother about the man who was standing half naked in the room. Realism was different from what her heart wanted.
Once she would have enjoyed such a picture in her life. Her husband, standing there with a sheepish expression on his face as he smiled at their son and his antics, him pushing back his unruly curls would have made her smile at him with love but now it just registered in her mind but it did not bring out the burst of flames it should have really brought.
Right now, all it brought her was pain and a disgust at her self for once upon a time falling for him and a bigger self-loathing at her self for noticing it. Even though she knew deep down that woman in his office ogled him and tried to get his attention all the time. She couldn't forgive him easily. She knew that Milind was attractive in his own rugged sort of way but did it really matter to her now…she did not know! Her feelings for this man were ambivalent. She hated the new inkling of feeling that was trying to burst out from the hidden corners of her heart.
Rithwick after seeing the silence quietly peeked from behind his father's legs to watch his mom. What he saw brought a giggle on his little face. His father and mother were staring at each other. His mom was avoiding his dad's eyes while his dad's eyes were transfixed on hers.
"Ma…ma" his voice broke the spell as Prachi looked at her son with a stern smile.
"Could you please bring him down?" Prachi asked Milind as she turned around pretending to be upset with her son as she walked out without a second glance and went outside to escape the claustrophobic atmosphere. She breathed out trying to let go of the strange sensation that assailed her.
Rithwick wanted to run behind his mom but Milind stopped him knowing very well that Prachi wanted some space. Milind brought Rithwick down and placed in him on the rug and immediately Rithwick ran towards the toys that were placed in the corner of the room. Milind watched him with a benevolent smile and turned around to leave the room.
He looked at his son and realizing that he was sweating a little bit, Milind turned on the room AC to full and closed the windows and draperies that Prachi and slightly left open. He was in the process of turning around when his attention was caught. He froze at the sight that he saw from the window. His hands automatically went out to stop her as he stood transfixed and watched Prachi. Prachi was almost right in front of him in the garden and but her back was towards him.
She was walking on the neatly trimmed grass lawn deep in thought, worrying about something. She had not stopped for second to admire the beauty of the surroundings as she walked back and forth from end to end on the green lawn. Earlier, when she had come to his bedroom her dress had not registered in his mind. Now, looking at her he felt that an angel had drifted back to earth. She was wearing a simple white salwar, her hair was wet from her early morning bath and her face and skin glowed from the early morning sun. She looked really pretty as she walked back and forth without any backward glance.
Milind drank in the sight like a man drinking in a desert after a very long time. She was so beautiful and devoid of makeup she was utterly irresistible. Milind couldn't take his eyes off her! Suddenly Prachi stopped and froze as her head turned towards where the window was. Her brows furrowed and her eyes stared at him directly.
His heart leaped violently as he felt like a thief who was caught stealing. Some sane part of him knew that she would not be able to see him because of the tinted window but he was glad that she could sense his presence at least. He lovingly gazed at her with longing, her face suddenly reddened as though knowing in heart that Milind was looking at her. She turned around abruptly and walked away from his view and came back indoors.
Milind looked at her parting back and immediately stepped away from the window and started to play with Rithwick.
Prachi came back inside and saw Milind with Rithwick on the rug. Milind saw prachi walk in and immediately kissed Rithwick on his forehead and got up to leave. Rithwick was so engrossed in his toys that he forgot that his mom was upset earlier and that his father had also left for his office.
Prachi was giving Rithwick his lunch with rice and daal when the phone rang and one of the servants answered the call.
"Haan ji..Madam, hai ghar mein.." he answered and brought the cordless phone to prachi. Wondering who would be calling her here she took the phone from the servant who was holding out the phone patiently for her.
"Hello…Prachi here" she said tentatively and as soon as she uttered the words a huge smile played on her lips as she heard the conversation from the other end.
"Prachi, tum bhi na..I am so khatti with you!!!…you haven't called me in 3 day….3 DAYS!!! ..yaar… Kabhi Kabhi mujhe bhi yaad karo…" ayesha complained as she talked to her friend.
"Ayesha! With Rithwick and everything mujhe time……" before she could finish her explanation Ayesha cut her off...
"What time! If you really wanted to talk to me you would have found the time!!! Give Rithwick to his papa and ask him to take care and then you will have all the time in the world" she pouted over the phone.
Prachi knew that Ayesha was saying this because she wanted Prachi to get back with Milind. But how could she explain to her that what her friend was wishing for was not going to happen.
Trying to deviate from the topic prachi asked about the office… " woh saab chod na……How are things at work…?"
Ayesha immediately became serious. "Yaar, Prachi..there are so many rumors circulating about you that I have lost track of it…" Ayesha was trying to make light of all the vicious gossip she had heard after Prachi had left after that day of her collapse. Finally not wanting to hide any truths from her friend she stated quietly…"Especially about our chottu's parentage…Milind did try to stop the rumors but how can he without saying the truth???…."
Prachi kept quiet not wanting to deal with the situation right now. "Chalo, woh sab chod na…aab yeh bata..when are you visiting us..? Rithwick really misses you…"
With a smile ayesha replied.."I'll swing by in the evening just to see my chottu…" with that they chatted for a few more minutes and then hung up.
It was 6.30 in the evening and Milind was driving back home with his guest.
"Saala, sukriti kaise hai…. Is she taking care of herself…?" he asked as he patted him on the shoulders
"Haan…woh tho teek hai….but she wanted to come too. I had a hard time convincing her to stay back in Bombay…."
"Kyun…." Milind asked wondering why his sister was being ziddi. Generally, sukriti was never adamant it was really surprising to hear that she was being this way.
"KYUN…. Bhai! You told me that you had a big surprise for me and then you are asking me why she wanted to come!!!" he breathed an exasperated sigh thinking about the conversation he had with Sukriti.
"Chalo…at least now tell me what this huge surprise is or should I just take a wild guess!!" he asked looking sideways at Milind as the car entered the huge gates of the house.
"Another 2 minutes and you will see…" Milind said parking the car and grabbing his jacket from the back as he got out. His passenger got out as well and closed the car door.
"well, we are home!! Hopefully, the surprise is waiting for me inside…" he asked laughing as he walked with Milind. Seeing and sensing the sudden seriousness in Milind's face he immediately went quiet as an eerie feeling assailed him. Milind opened the front door and entered inside waiting for sukriti's husband to enter the house.
Once inside what caught and brought tears to his eyes was prachi sitting in the room with a smile on her face, playing with a small boy.
"Prachi…." He shouted with joy and sorrow as he walked fast towards her.
Prachi looked up in shock hearing such a familiar voice from her childhood.
"Tum…." Her smile that was there moments before disappeared seeing the person who had called out her name…
"Prachi, Please mujhe maaf karo… I am not the person you knew before. I am married now. I have a son too… I married sukriti…" he rambled on out loud as he came forward and held her hands refusing to let go less she disappear from his vision.
Prachi's anger gave away to surprise and her love for her brother overrode everything else…Everything was forgiven and forgotten seeing her remorseful brother…
"Alaap.." Prachi hiccupped as she hugged her brother.
Very cute update, Sangs!! can't envision Michi child w/o the unruly hair!! that's part of his description!! he's soo coochy coo!! i love him!! :D
