PART – 20

Milind didn't bother to come out of his office the entire day. He was immersed with the files that he had brought from the office the previous day. He was sitting on the chair intensely going through the files on his laptop.

Simultaneously, he was watching the asian stock market trend as he worked on the files. The hours flew by and by the time he'd bothered to look up at the clock it was nearly 2.00 in the afternoon.

Realizing it was time for lunch he closed his laptop and got up pushing the chair back towards the wall.

Standing up, he stretched his arms to relieve the pressure on his shoulders.

What was she doing now? He thought of Prachi. He had totally forgotten that she was here at his house. Deciding to check out what she was doing he walked out of the office.

He looked across the hall to see if she was anywhere nearby. There was no sight of her in the vicinity. Puzzled, he walked towards the stairs.

He decided to check the guest room to see what she had been doing all this time? He climbed the stairs two at a time bounding up the stairs with leashed energy. He opened the door without bothering to knock. He entered the room and glanced out at the balcony. The door was open and a slight breeze was blowing into the room.

His eyes slowly went to the bed and he was surprised to find her sleeping peacefully. She had both her hands under her cheeks as she slept facing the balcony. Her hair was covering her right cheek and her legs were curled inside. She was sleeping like a baby.

He walked close by and pushed the tendril of hair away from her cheek so that it was behind her ears. She sighed and got more comfortable on the bed. The thick comforter covered her as she had the A/C running on high. Stepping away he went and closed the balcony door and closed the curtains making the room dark.

Walking back he sat down near her hips on the bed and watched her. Her face spoke of innocence and of hardships her delicate being had handled the last few years.

Milind realized that she had grown up in the last few years. The young girl was gone and here was a woman who had faced some realities in life. His hands slowly traced her arms and he watched her sleep. He was tired too. He hadn't slept well the previous night because of the roller coaster ride of emotions that had churned inside him. She was his and he was never letting her go.

Milind Mishra had never lost in his life and he was not going to lose this one. Removing his t-shirts he threw it across the floor and decided to talk a nap along with her. The bed beckoned and he could not stop himself from removing his sandals and sliding besides her. He pulled the comforter over his hip and rested his hands behind his neck. He watched the ceiling as his eyes automatically slid closed.

Prachi turned around in her sleep and her hands hit something solid. The A/C was blowing on her face and making her shiver. Sliding to the solid wall that was close by she nuzzled her face against the warmth. Her hands unconsciously went around it and hugged the warmth tightly to her. It brought the kind of peace she had felt once five years back.

Prachi woke up and was surprised by the heaviness around her hips. Coming awake, she realized the Milind was sleeping on her bed and she had been sleeping almost on top of him. Her legs were tangled with his and her face was resting on his chest and her hands were around his hips.

Milind's hands were holding her tightly to him as he slept peacefully. Shock went through her system and a blush crept up her entire body. Slowly, she removed his hands from around her and tried to slip out of the bed.

She sat up and had just put one foot down when she realized that her hands were held in his. She turned around in shock and saw him smiling at her wickedly but his eyes were still closed. She hurriedly averted her eyes and tried to extricate her hand from his but he was holding it tightly.

Unexpectedly he pulled her wrist and she fell on top of him. His eyes were still closed as she watched him. Her face was being held close to his and she could see the irregularities on his face. He had a small mark on his forehead and she stared intently at it.

Milind opened his eyes and his hands traced the tendrils that fell across her face. She was mesmerized. He pulled her face closer and trailed kisses across her cheek as she shivered at the touch of his lips. His lips slowly descended and captured her rose petal lips. She gave in with a sigh as his arms encircled her hips. His hands traced her back as he kissed her hungrily.

He pulled her on to the bed, reversing their positions. She was lying on the bed and he was looking down at her. Her eyes were captured by his. He was bare-chested and that unnecessary thought registered in some corner of her mind.

Without giving her time to protest he bent down and captured her lips once more. Prachi's hands helplessly went around his neck, automatically pulling him closer to her. Her eyes closed as she buried her face against his neck. His hands went around her hugging her tightly to him.

"Prachi…" he called softly

That one word broke Prachi out of her trance and she started to struggle. She felt like buckets of cold water had been thrown on her face at once. What had she done? Pushing her hands against his chest she tried to extricate herself from his hold.

"Milind, Leave me" she said her voice shaky.

"You were enjoying being in my arms till now, why should I leave you?" he asked teasingly thinking that she was playing hard to get.

Pushing hard at him, "Milind, leave me" she said her voice becoming stronger by the minute.

Milind removed his hands from around her realizing that she was serious.

"Prachi, don't think I am giving in just because you said so. Your words do not hold any weight with me any longer. May be, five years ago I would have listened but not now." He said sitting up and pushing the comforter away.

Turning away from her he said "I will leave you free for tonight. I have waited 5 years for this. waiting one more night does not make much difference at all to me. " he got up from the bed and walked out of her room leaving her alone with her turbulent thoughts.

Prachi scrambled out of the bed and straightened herself. Tears slid down her cheeks as she hurried to the bathroom. She turned the tap and splashed water across her face. She glanced up at the mirror and what she saw of her, shocked her.

On the mirror was the face of a woman who had loved and lost. She couldn't remain here anymore. Whatever happens she will deal with it later. But now, she needed to escape from here. Determined she came back to the bedroom and sat at the foot of the bed contemplating her escape.

She was must have sat like that for an hour when she heard the housekeeper knocking on the bedroom door.

"Prachi" she had asked kindly.

Prachi turned around with a smile plastered on her face.

"Beta, Milind Baba is asking you to come down for dinner" she said looking at her.

"I am not hungry. Please can you tell him that I don't want dinner" she said sweetly

"But…" the housekeeper started

"I am really not hungry. Can you tell that to your Saab?" she said tightly.

"O.k...Beta" she walked away, silently closing the door on her way out.

Prachi was still thinking about her escape plan when Milind pushed opened the door ten minutes later.

"Come down for dinner" he said authoritatively

"I am not hungry" she said not looking at him.

"You skipped lunch today so you better come down for dinner" he threatened her.

"Milind, I am not hungry. Just leave me alone" she said adamantly not wanting to sit at the table with him again.

"O.K. If that's the case so bit. You can starve yourself. I don't care. I will tell the housekeeper not to provide you anything until you come to your senses and ask for food" he said harshly and went out of the room.

Why should I care if she eats or not? Let her starve herself to death. I don't care. I will have my dinner, saying that to himself he walked to the table to have his dinner.

The housekeeper served him and he ate his dinner but he did not enjoy it nor did he do much justice to the food. Finishing up his dinner he walked to his office to get some work done.

He was looking at some files when the housekeeper walked in with a glass of milk for the night.

Without glancing up he muttered a thanks and got engrossed with the work at hand. When he glanced at the clock it was 11.45. Closing the files for the night he went upstairs thinking about the marriage he had arranged at the court tomorrow.

He would not leave any loopholes. They were getting married tomorrow and he would ensure that she didn't escape him this time around. Thinking he walked to his room and closed the door. One more night and she would be his.

Removing his track pants he slid into bed and went to sleep contemplating the events that were going to happen tomorrow.

Prachi was pacing her room. She needed to get out of here. She looked up at the clock and it showed that it was 12.30. Everybody must be sleeping now she thought.

Going through the front door was not an option at all. She would be caught even before she opened the door the only idea that struck her and had merit was to climb down the balcony wall. The balcony was facing the garden and once inside the garden she could easily escape.

Besides today, luckily she was wearing a black salwar kameez. It would blend in with the night. With a sudden gust of energy she walked around the room trying to find something to climb down the balcony wall.

She looked around the room and her eyes fell on the bed sheet. Perfect, she thought.

Pulling the bed sheet out of the bed, she took it with her and opened the balcony door. She dropped it from the balcony to see whether it would reach the ground. It was a good 5 feet above the ground but she decided to take the risk.

With nervousness and a strong burst of energy she tied the bed sheet to the railing and dropped it on the other side of the balcony. It swayed to the wind but determinedly she put her legs across the railing and held the bed sheet with both her hands.

Her heart was beating was fast and she was scared. The only thought that dominated everything was that she needed to escape from here. She had totally forgotten how ruthless or relentless Milind would be if he found out.

Gingerly with her eyes tightly shut she slid down the bed sheet inch by inch not looking down at the ground. All the while muttering "oh my god! Oh my god! Save me!" until she had reached the end of the rope to get down. She had slowly opened her eyes and glanced down. It was steep. She was scared to let go of the bed sheet and to jump down to the floor.

Suddenly, she heard a rustling among the trees and with a start she had let go of her arms and fell down to the ground giving a startled yelp.

Immediately, she held her hands over her lips trying to stop herself from making any sound. Standing up slowly she realized that she had hurt her leg in the process. Slightly limping she walked to the trees so that she would be hidden from anyone's view.

Her dress was in shambles. There was mud all over her Salwar Kameez and her palm had scratches from the stones on the ground when she landed inelegantly.

She slid behind the trees hiding herself from everyone's view in case someone saw her. She slowly neared the gates of the farmhouse not bothering to turn back and look.

Once she was close to the farmhouse gates, she realized that there was a guard sitting in the guardhouse. But he was sleeping inside it.

Slowly, she walked towards the gates and quietly opened it just a bit to allow her to pass through. She turned and looked back and the guard was still sleeping.

She came out of the door and turned to the right and walked on the road breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Milind had woken up when he had heard the balcony door opening from his bedroom. He watched from his window and had been initially surprised seeing Prachi walking out with a bed sheet in hand.

When he had seen her tie the bed sheet to the railing he had been angry at her attempt to escape him. But later anger had given away to amusement as he had watched her antics.

He had almost laughed out loud as he had stepped into the balcony and watched her sliding down with her eyes closed muttering to god to save her.

He had stood there hiding from her view as he had watched her fall down and limp towards the gates. He knew she would easily get out of the door. He watched her get out of the gates and then he determinedly walked to his room with a purpose.

Pulling on a t-shirt and pair of jeans he picked up his car keys and went out.

He started his car and honked for the guard to open the door. The guard immediately woke up and hurriedly opened the door.

Milind must have driven nearly of a mile before he spotted her. She was sitting on one of the mile stones with her head bent and her hands holding her injured leg.

She hadn't realized yet but she would in a second he thought. He gritted his teeth and watched what she was going to do next.

The light beam from the car hit her and she looked up startled. She immediately knew who it was. She got up and with instinct born of desperateness she tried to escape but Milind pulled the car and stopped her from moving away. She was now stuck between the milestone and the car. She stared at him as he got out of the car leisurely.

"So, you were trying to escape!" he said smiling but she knew that he was angry at her.

Prachi hung her head not answering making her even more guilty.

"So, how was the ride down the bed sheet. Was it safe?! I distinctly heard you asking god to save you during your eventful ride to the ground" saying he laughed not able to control it now.

Prachi was shocked to know that he had seen her escape from the beginning. He had seen her undignified ride down the bed sheet. A telltale flush came across her face as she became angry.

"Milind, how many times do I have to tell you that I don't want to marry you? I don't even love you anymore" she said trying to wound him.

"Oh! Is it? I didn't get the impression earlier in the evening" he said referring to their interlude on the bed.

Prachi was stunned. What was with him? Was it a game for him? He was not hurt nor did he show any emotion that he was suffering from her words. He was arrogant and ruthless as ever.

"I am not coming with you. I am leaving" saying she tried to walk past him. Before she could cross him he pushed her against the car door and held her against it with his body holding both her hands tightly.

"Listen and listen carefully. Let go of this foolish stubbornness. You are going to marry me tomorrow and that is final. No one in the world is going to change that." He said angrily

"I will ruin your family and bring them to the streets without any remorse" he said ruthlessly

"You are blackmailing me." She said trying to escape from his clutches

"I don't care what you call it. It might be blackmail to you or in my mind it might be strong persuasion, it doesn't matter. Tomorrow, we have any appointment in the court at 10.00. Be ready" saying he opened the car door and pushed her inside.

"Milind, you can't marry someone by blackmailing them. This is not right" she said as she sat in the car and faced him

"I don't care. If you consider it blackmail so be it. Anyways, I am not bedding you by blackmail but I am wedding you by it. Which is far better than being bedded by it" saying it with mockery and arrogance he started the car.

Prachi sat in silence as he drove the short distance and walked with her to her room. "We will sleep together tonight. I don't want you making another silly escape attempt. Besides, I can't lose my sleep tonight. Tomorrow is a special day!" saying gayly he removed his jeans and t-shirt and threw it on the sofa and slid into bed.

Prachi watched him for eons before she took the pillow from the bed and walked to the couch. She threw the pillow on the couch and sat down on it. Her dress was dirty and her hand was hurting.

Getting up once again, she walked to the wardrobe and grabbed the first thing that she found and went to the bathroom. Talking a bath she emerged twenty minutes later. Her eyes were red from all the crying she had done while she had taken her bath.

What could she do now? Ayesha, what am I to do? I know the truth and my heart will never allow me to accept what he has done.

Sliding on the couch she turned away from him and immediately sleep took over. She hadn't dried her hair and it was dripping wet.It was hanging on the hand rest as she slept.

Milind had been pretending to be asleep. He woke up immediately once he realized that she had slept. He got up and walked towards the couch. She was asleep and her hair was wet. How stupid could she be? Sighing he went to the bathroom and got a towel and gently wiped the excess water from her hair.

Lifting her, bed sheet and all he carried her to the bed and laid her down. Slipping besides her he held her to him as both of them slept through the night.
