I think Ekta definitely knows that she would lose if she ever brought south serials to the global TV awards. She knows that her serial will not win any awards because the jury will not have a choice other than offering an award to south serials. oh my goodness coming back to Kasturi...it is the most stupidest serial one can ever make. I don't know who gave her the storyline. People hardly watch it now. When I went India I heard my aunts telling that Kasturi is a biggest piece of crap.

When we talk about extra-marital affairs. The protagonist of the story is never made to get back to her previous lover because this would be a disgrace to the whole institution of marriage.

I can't comment on soaps from different parts of India but I can tell you something about South African soaps. One of the best South African soaps here tackles really hard hitting issues like HIV/AIDS, mixed race relationships, corrupt politics, crime, drug and alcohol abuse, spousal abuse and prostitution. But it's all done with such intelligence, sensitivity and maturity that it manages to entertain and inform at the same time. I shudder to think how these issues would be dealt with in a Hindi soap. I watch Hindi soaps cos they are great escapism and unintentionally funny but unfortunately they do lack a sophisticated, mature world view. Oh yeah one more thing about these South African soaps inspite of potraying a somewhat corrupt westernised society none of the characters get married more than 1 or 2 times. There are second marriages but usually after a lengthy divorce.

BC, the funniest part is that Ekta says that she is showing what is happening in Indian households but in which household do so many corss marriages, extra-marital relationships and divorces take place? There is total disregard to human relationships in the Indian soaps. Looks like she is competing with the likes of The Bold and Beautiful where the main protagonist has slept with or had relations with practically all the male characters.

If this is what is happening in India, I'm glad my great grand parents left. 😆 Mmmph, Brooke didn't just have realtionships with all the male characters but all the male characters in one family. BT also seems to be following this path, especially after what happened in KS. 🤢

Tell me about it, BC. Brooke is really the limit is'nt she? Even the son-in-law was not spared. Wonder what she is to Hope, grandmother or mother. India is not like that BC. People still hold on to their moral values because societal pressures are still strong. Divorces have increased no doubt. But still it is nowhere near the western societies. Ekta, I guess, wants to show some fantasy world for people to escape into since they cannot do these things in their own lives.

Brilliant discussion. Blackcurrant you write beautifully. More power to your elbow. BTw, have you all wondered, how easily vamps/villains in E's serials manage to cheat people of their property. Just hand them the papers, have them sign and bingo they are paupers. No registration required. Both sides don't have to sign before witnesses. In kyunki, that tripti fools a whole family of clever businessmen so easily. And then the same clever people can't get jobs and have to lug weight to make a few rupees.

That is exactly what is happening in Ekta's serials. But there is this one serial in South India that I really adore and watch a lot. It is a no doubt a very heavy theme but it is a story about a women who strives to make it hard in a construction field. I think some south Indians know about what I am talking. The story, cinematoraphy and dialogue delivery are very well done and since I am a part of this construction industry I can very well relate myself to it. She did take a bold step of divorcing her husband but did not remarry anyone though she was asked by her mother to do so.

Even we felt that she might marry her best friend who was in love with her before marriage. But I guess the director has no intentions of showing something like that. Instead they are showing an amazing bond of friendship having developed between them. The two seem to respect their friendship.

Also her competitor in business is unkowingly her own step brother who hates her and wants to bring her to streets. Every move in the story has been well framed and well taken out.

Now that she has seen everything in her own life she has decided to separate business from her professional life and has also yielded to voilence in the form of rowdiesm and corruption to get what she deserves.

This soap is at top TRP ratings in south for a while and the actress who was the lead protagonist is a household name in every houses. She has been an example for many women in the construction field.

It did have some reality to it because they did not show her becoming a businesswomen in few months. but they actually show all that she had to face for taking a bold step of divorce and business.

In reality she was pregnant when she was doing the show. But she managed to do all the scenes with her pregnancy and still come back for shooting. We could very well see that she was pregnant while she was shooting. She was also pregnant the second time and still did not go for maternity. that is how dedicated south Actors and actresses are unlike some bollywood stars who start their tantrums with just one soap. (like Pulkit of Kyunki and Sujal of Kashish)
