The Balaji head honcho is planning to build a dream studio in Thane, on the outskirts of Mumbai

Lighting up my space: Ekta Kapoor
Ekta Kapoor's 40-inch screen dreams are about to acquire a 70 mm vision. For long, Kapoor has been besieged by space problems for her myriad serials (currently being shot in studio complexes owned by Balaji Films). Now, she's planning to build a Film City of her own!

Role model

Says a source close to the project, "Ekta has always been bogged down by lack of physical and creative space.

So she's planning to build a studio complex similar to Nitin Desai's in Karjat, replete with good roads and bylanes to give an epic feel to the serials.

We at Balaji can never capture the mythical 'magic hour' from the movies (a cinematic term referring to three hours in the day when natural light is perfect for shooting) in our serials because we have to ration our time on the roads and public places."

The source adds that with a studio they'll even be able to control a show's lighting set-up. "We'll be able to light up our shows like Raj Kapoor or Sanjay Bhansali's films, as the quality and texture of such lighting is unique. Ekta wants that quality to her serials," says the source.

Creative instinct

Ekta says, "I'm the greatest Sanjay Leela Bhansali fan in the universe. I've seen Devdas 3,000 times and he has re-defined screen opulence. In fact, he jokes that every time he makes a film, he knows I'm going to copy it in my shows."

She adds that Balaji's got two new shows coming up on Sony on November 19 and her crew is already worried. "They joke that after seeing Saawariya I'm going to call an urgent meeting in the middle of the night and change all the episodes.

I'm actually going to sit with pen and paper and take notes when I see Saawariya!" she says, laughing.

"Ever since I saw Devdas, I've wanted a similar aura in my shows. I want to create Bikaner or New York in my studio. So yes, I'm looking at creating that mythical 'magic hour' for my shows," she adds.

Ekta is planning to build her film city on the outskirts of Mumbai, near Thane. She has already purchased the land and work will start there soon.
