Part 2

Premlatha had cleaned the small living room of the house as much as possible. She had also cooked some halwa for the guests.

"Maa, Soumya was saying these people are super rich. Who are they?" Prachi had asked her mother who was taking out the set of cups and saucers, which she used only for guests.

"Do you remember Pavitra Aunty?" said Premlatha.

"Pavitra, who?" Prachi tried to remember.

"The wife of the village's doctor who died years ago. She had then moved to Mumbai to live with her brother after her son moved to London" Premlatha reminded Prachi of Pavitra.

"Oh, now I remember" said Prachi as Pavitra's face came to her mind.

"I had met Pavitra last year sometime. She still hasn't given up being a marriage broker. I had given her your photograph, asking her to find a match for you. It seems her nephew saw your photograph and wanted to see you" Premlatha had elaborated.

"Maa, they are here" Soumya had given a shout from the outside of the house as she saw a car coming in the small street in which their house was situated.

"Prachi, you go inside the room" Premlatha had sent her daughter inside and pulled her pallu over her back onto her right shoulder as she went out to receive the Mishras. Soumya had joined Ayesha who was peeping through the window to get a glance of the guests.

"Suk, this is quite embarrassing, this whole act of'.." Milind whispered in his sister's ear as he slowed the car down as instructed by his Bua.

"Don't worry Bhaiyya, it will be fine once we get into the house and start talking. Actually I am also feeling quite odd" Sukruti had replied.

As Milind stopped the car in front of the small house, Mishraji and Pavitra got out of the car first, followed by Sukruti and Milind. Premlatha had humbly and warmly welcomed them, leading them inside the house.

"Ayesha di, is that the boy dressed in black?" Soumya had whispered in Ayesha's ears.

"Must be, it can't be that oldie" Ayesha had said looking at the senior Mishra.

"But this man doesn't look like Prachi di's type. He is so tall, dark with moustache and beard, looks so rough and tough." Soumya had said in a complaining tone.

"I know what you mean, and look at that girl's heels. It has made her 6 inches taller or what. Wonder how she balances herself on those" Ayesha commented looking at Sukruti's pointed heels.

By then, Premlatha had brought the guests in showing them their seats. Mishraji and Pavitra had taken their seats first, followed by Milind and Sukruti. Premlatha had introduced Ayesha and Soumya to the guests.

Sukruti got up from her place and hugged Ayesha and Soumya to greet them. Ayesha and Soumya had looked at each other through a corner of eyes, as they weren't used to this way of greeting. Pavitra was talking to Premlatha, Mishraji had looked around, while Milind had focussed his eyes on his sunglasses in his hand. Ayesha had served them with cold drinks.

Slowly the discussion had shifted to Prachi. Premlatha had done her best to give a nice image of her daughter elaborating from her love for teaching kids to her hobby of singing. Later, she had indicated to Ayesha and Soumya to bring Prachi to the living room. Ayesha walked into the kitchen while Soumya went inside the room in which Prachi had sat. Ayesha then handed over the tray with bowls containing halwa into her elder sister's hands.

Prachi came out of the room with her eyes focussed on the tray. Serving halwa to the Mishras she had stood in front of Milind who was still lost playing with his sunglasses. Sukruti had nudged her elbow against her brother's arm to indicate his attention was required on something else. Milind had suddenly lifted his head to face Prachi. 'Beautiful' was the expression he had felt with a glance of Prachi and he quickly took the bowl of halwa from the tray.

Pavitra and Mishraji had spoken to Prachi and she had answered them in monosyllables. As the conversation progressed positive, Premlatha, not wanting to be disillusioned later had mentioned about Prachi being a manglik.

"Premlathaji, I am someone who started my business on the day of eclipse though I was warned by everyone that my business would never flourish. By God's grace, everything is going smooth until now. My son is one step ahead of me in everything. One has to be a good human being and all we want is a good natured daughter in law for our house" said Mishraji.

"Bhaiyya, manglik curse can be overcome by having the girl married to a tree before the actual wedding" Pavitra had interfered.

"Come on Pavitra, this is the age of science and technology. Let's not go back in time. Premlathaji, I don't think we need to do anything of that sorts. Let's decide on a date. May be we should let the boy and the girl speak to each other before we elders decide on our own" Mishraji had looked at Milind who seemed to still eating his halwa. Pavitra hadn't said anything further knowing that none of the Mishra men were going to listen to her.

Mishraji had enquired with Premlatha if they have a Pandit, consulting whom they can get some tentative dates for the wedding. Premlatha had suggested they could go and meet the priest in the temple. Mishraji came up with a plan that they all could go to the temple while Milind and Prachi can talk to each other in private. Sukruti asked Ayesha and Soumya if they could show her around in the town as she too wanted to leave her brother alone with Prachi, but didn't want to go with the elders. Soumya and Ayesha had taken her out to show the nearby pond.

After everyone left, Milind and Prachi were still seated in their chairs opposite to each other. Milind couldn't understand why he was feeling peculiarly nervous. It wasn't the first time he was talking to a woman for he had worked with many women from several backgrounds in his business. Overcoming his hindrance, and wanting to break the silence that seemed to get deeper with time, Milind cleared his throat and introduced himself as he would do in any of his office meetings "Hi, I am Milind, Milind Mishra".

Wondering why he was telling her his name though she knew it, as it was taken on several occasions when the elders were speaking, Prachi said "I am Prachi", as she also had wondered if she needed to tell her name too. Saying so, she had slowly lifted her face to make an eye contact with him. But she wasn't able to hold the contact for more than a fraction of a second for it seemed like his gaze pierced her. Her heart that was already beating high in her rib cage, had thumped vigorously now.

Not knowing exactly what to talk, Milind had enquired her where she worked, what she had studied etc. to which he got precise answers. As he heard a car breaking, Milind had realized the elders were back from the temple. He wanted to ask Prachi what he really wanted to ask before people made it to the house. "Prachi, will you marry me? I mean do you want to marry me?" Milind had asked quickly.

The question had Prachi's heart in her mouth. She didn't know how to answer that question. As she took her own time in framing answers to the question, which she herself didn't understand in her mind, the elders were back in the house. Milind left a deep breath out as his question was left unanswered.

Premlatha had served a batch of tea then. Sukruti was back in the house too with Prachi's sisters and she had sat by Milind showing him the pictures of the pond she had taken in her mobile. Mishraji had indicated they should be leaving now. Premlatha had offered to cook lunch for them but Mishraji had politely refused as he had promised a friend in Wardha to visit him for lunch.

"Premlathaji, it was nice meeting you and your daughters. As I said, we will give you the final decision in a couple of days. You too talk to your daughter and let us know". As both families said goodbye to each other, the Mishras had walked towards their car and Premlatha had walked up to the gate to see them off, along with Ayesha and Soumya. Just before sitting in driver's seat, Milind had remembered he left his sunglasses in the house. Though Premlatha indicated to Soumya to get it from inside, she seemed to be busy talking to Sukruti. Milind had told Premlatha he would get it himself as his heart wanted to see Prachi one more time before he left. Walking inside the house, he had found her picking up the empty plates and cups.

"I had left my....." before he finished his sentence, Prachi noticed his sunglasses on the tea table. Picking it in her hand she had extended it to its owner.

"Thanks" Milind had said taking his glasses off of her hand. His forefinger had touched hers very faintly and she had withdrawn her hand in nervousness feeling a sting. "Bye Prachi" Milind had said in a voice little louder than a whisper as he walked out to reach his car. Prachi had stood watching until, first Milind, and then his car disappeared from her sight.

Another good one Shubs. Well Milind looks as though he's already taken in by her charm and beauty, sparks may begin to fly soon? I liked the simplicity of the whole way you described the MICHI meeting and the dialogues you used - very realistic and down to earth. Again I guess it's those little touches that are so your style - Sukruti's high heels, the pond pictures on the mobile, the sunglasses, the halwa, china used for guests only.......... all give it that personal, life-like feel.
So what happens next Shubs - looking forward to the next part.
By the way hope you had a good day.

When I was reading this chapt..I was thinking of those Sooraj bharjatiya films..this guy and family meeting propective wife/bahu scenerio..ofcourse nothing filmy here..👏! Nice part, Milind seems to like Prachi, but what about Prachi, she didn't comment in her mind what a hunk Milind is or is she like Ayesha and Soumya not liking the beard..Joking!! 😡😆 I liked the simplicity of the chapt.

Yas, I kind of indicated through Ayesha and Soumya that Prachi too doesn't like rough and tough looking guys with daadi-moonch (doesn't matter short/long). But since you know that I love Milind with his beard, there is no way I would make him shave, no matter Prachi likes it or not.😆
See most don't like Milind-like looks at once.. it kind of grows over you.

@I agree..on the last line. The bearded Milind grows on you after some time. 😳
I have one request..please don't for whatever reason, be it writers block or work commitments end this FF in haste like you have done with previous FF's. I like the pace of this FF.
