Chapter 5 (II)
She sat there, gazing at him for a while. Suddenly, Milind opened his eyes and looked right at her. Feeling a bit like a deer caught in headlights, she just stared back, unsure of what to do.
"What?" he asked annoyed.
"What?" she repeated lamely.
"What what?" his anger rose.
"N..nothing" she stammered.
Saying so, she scurried off the bed, and into the bathroom for a quick fresh-up. Her first order of business: getting back into her own clothes. She sauntered out of the bedroom to go find Sukriti. Milind simply rolled his eyes and went to get ready himself; he had a long day at work ahead.
"Sukriti" Prachi tried to be as quiet as possible. The last thing she needed was her father-in-law or the house servants to see her in Milind's kurta. After a few minutes of knocking, a sleepy Sukriti opened the door. One look at Prachi, and she was wide awake.
She cocked one eyebrow and stated cheekily, "Damn Bhabhi, that's a good look on you" and winked. Prachi turned crimson.
"Sukriti" she said in embarrassed urgency. "It's entirely your fault. You forgot to send my suitcases up to the room, and I had to wear your brother's clothes for the night"
"For the night? Bhabhi, I'm not 8 years old, mujhe pata hai suhaag raat mein kapdon ki zaroorat nahi hoti" Sukriti chuckled, which earned her a glare from Prachi.
"Accha, Bhabhi, Bhaiyya likes his tea brought up to the room for him, he gets very agitated if he doesn't have it right after he showers. Also, he likes to read the paper while he's having his tea. So why don't you do the honors today, and I'll send your suitcases up myself"
Tea right after shower. Newspaper with tea. Hmmn, could anyone say anal? But Prachi merely nodded. Tea right after shower it'll be. As Prachi turned to leave, Sukriti added, "Oh and Bhabhi do you have earplugs?"
When Prachi looked at her confused, Sukriti merely smiled. "Nothing, you go on."
Puzzled, she walked into the kitchen. It took her a while to find all the ingredients necessary, but she managed. Finally, she took the tray and walked to the bedroom. Opening the door, she walked in, nearly dropped the tray when she heard it.
It. The most horrendous singing she'd ever heard in her life. Completely off rhythem, out of sync with the tune, and just completely miserable. For a minute, Prachi thought there was an intruder in their room, but then she realized the criminal singing was coming directly from the bathroom, and that her hubby dearest was the perpetrator. No wonder Sukriti had asked her if she had earplugs.
Groaning inwardly, she put the tray down. She was to be subject to this crime against music every morning. Wasn't there a clause against cruel and unusual punishment in the Indian constitution?
Prachi busied herself with sorting out her clothes, as Milind continued on, in all his glory, "Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya…har fikr ko dhuye main udata chala gaya…" She heard the water turn off. Milind walked out seconds later, wiping the remnants of water droplets off his chest, still humming his tune. He froze when he saw her, and she him.
He looked devastatingly handsome wrapped in a plush white towel, his damp chest taut with defined pectoral muscles. It rose and fell as he breathed, creating a strange rhythm which Prachi could feel resonate through the room.
He was embarrassed she'd heard him sing. Baba and Sukriti were the only ones who knew about his quirks, and he wasn't yet ready to include Prachi in that inner circle. It's not like he had a choice though.
"I'll go get ready" Prachi said quietly. At least she hadn't laughed at him. He suddenly noticed the tea, and his paper. Odd, he thought. Ramu Kaka doesn't arrive 'till 8, and it was only 7.30 still.
"Prachi, did Sukriti bring up my tea?" he questioned her.
"No" she said quietly. "I did"
It took Milind a minute to register that. "You…you don't have to do that" he insisted. What was she up to?
"I know, Sukriti asked me to" with that, she turned and walked into the bathroom.
Prachi Shah is one-of-a-kind Milind thought, as he sipped the tea, pleasantly noting that she had somehow manage to make it just how he liked it. Strong, and lightly sweet. Kind of like Prachi herself, he added as an after thought.
