Here is a new theory as to why they introduced the leap now and got rid of both the Shah and the Mishra families. This stems from Lizzy's information that the bengali family looks to be the KIT cast.
If I understand correctly, there is a contract each actor has to sign to state his/her willingness to act in the show for a particular length of time. Maybe that length of time is over for the cast of KYM which means the contract has to be renewed with the actors to continue in the show.
For the actors of KIT though the contract period may not be over as yet, for if I am not mistaken the show closed down earlier than expected.
Now the budget conscious BT guys must have hit on this idea of introducing the leap out of the blue. That will ensure that they do not have to show the cast of KYM, save the leads whose contracts will get renewed and at the same time gainfully engage the cast of KIT whose contract period is not yet over. Once their contract expires, they may get back the original cast of KYM by giving them a fresh contract then.
If this theory (which I admit may have many holes since I am no expert in the hiring and firing policy of the company) holds true, then one needs to find out how long is the contract period for the actors of KIT to figure out how long this leap is going to last.
