Lock kiya jaye ya freeze kiya jaye?

M R Navindutt

So? they asked looking at me quizzically. They meaning the family. "So what?" I asked. "The show. Which one do you like more?" The family was keen to know whether I like Amitabh Bachchan's Kaun Banega Crorepati show more or Shah Rukh Khan's.

Heck, being asked to comment on their abilities to host the show is like asking to choose between your dad and brother. Can't make choices.

"Still!" the family demanded. To begin with I have breathed and lived entertainment with Bachchan like all Indians have. His popularity spans three generations in any average Indian family. Even those who sneer at Hindi films cannot deny his mark on their memories. I think we have learnt all our lessons in humility from him.

And Khan is the quintessential middle-class boy who realised the average Indian man's dream. Today when money must have ceased to make any more sense to him, he is seized with the need to excel. To him KBC represents a platform on which he must make his own individualistic mark.

I think it is a mistake to compare Khan's style with Bachchan's. One had extreme humility, the other has an extreme playful humaneness.

If Bachchan had his cool stately personality, Khan has his infectious smile and sauciness.

Okay, so who is better? Go figure. I like them both

KBC News - SRK continues to woo his audiences

Viewers tell us what they think of Khan in his new avatar

No matter what TRP ratings of polls may tell you, one thing's for sure King Khan is here and he's here to stay! KBClive spoke to KBC viewers of all age groups what they thought of the new season now into it's second week on the telly.

Jayshree, 53, Housewife

"I have been enjoying myself a lot. I think the personal touch he is getting to the show is great. It doesn't seem a put on or patronizing. I have thoroughly enjoyed week one and I hope it continues just the same way. His sense of humour and wit is fantastic!"

Sam, 28, Professional

"Honestly speaking I didn't like the first episode. I felt he was nervous and very fidgety. But as the days have gone by he has improved tremendously and if you had asked me on the first day I would have said I won't go past week one but now I think I just might watch it whenever I am at home. And please get that chair changed! He is so uncomfortable on it."

Nidhi, 13, Student

"I like Shah Rukh a lot. I think he is doing a great job. He treats the elders with respect and that's very sweet. I like his suits a lot too. And I really loved Thursday's episode… and he looks so cool in the music video."

Vipen, 60, Businessman

"I don't like him. Many times he seems uncomfortable when fans tell him things. He should be prepared for it since he is acting for so long. I do watch the programme because of what I can learn. I won't say he is doing a bad job but I won't say he is great either."

Asha, 25, Maid Servant

"Mujhe Shah Rukh achche lagte hain. Woh sabse pyaar se baat karte hain and mujhe woh baat unkee achee lagtee hain. Aur mujhe last wala toh bahut hee pasand aaya. Hum sab toh woh programme roj raat ko dekhte hain."

In conversation with Big B

Sunday, January 28, 2007 09:52:16 pm

Amitabh Bachchan talks to TIMES NOW correspondent Afreen Kidwai on what it means to be conferred with the highest French award, his son's performance in "Guru", his daughter-in-law to be Aishwarya Rai and SRK's KBC.

Having won so many international accolades, how different was it going on stage this time?

There have been several foreign recognitions. This is the most distinguished of all. I am deeply honoured and very humbled. I just feel it is a wonderful time for Indian cinema and for India. Other countries are recognising Indian talent. I don't take it as a personal recognition; I take it as recognition for my industry, for my country and I feel proud about it.

This has been a great start to the year both personally and professionally. Everyone is talking about your son's wedding. Does that bother you?
No. I think it is a wonderful moment for a father to know that his son has decided to get married and settle down in life and build a family. We couldn't be happier.

Your son's performance in "Guru" has been much acclaimed. How have you seen him evolve as an actor?

I really loved it (Guru). I have been watching Abhishek and I feel that he was making good progress, maybe small steps and taking them forward. "Guru" was a big surprise. Surprised me that he could handle this subject and this performance in the way he did.

There's going to be another actor in your family, Aishwarya Rai. How is your rapport with her? Are you encouraging her to continue with films?

That is not for me to say. It is for Abhishek. She is getting married to Abhishek. Not to me.

What is your rapport with her like?

She will be the daughter in the family.

You are part of the "India Poised" campaign. What do you think we need to do?

What I liked about the campaign was that it is provoking areas which were either subdued or hidden. We all know that we are poised to take off and we are not making that last yard or so. We need to just break out of our shackles of always remaining a submissive and tolerant nation. We have been. It is in our genes. We have lived with this philosophy for centuries. We need to be stronger to be able to tell the rest of the world what we are capable of doing. Somewhere we are faltering. But now is the time to disprove everyone. We have the opportunity; we have the talent and the means. Just step out and show the world it is time to fly.

Have you watched KBC and what do you think of it?

I haven't yet. But I will. I am sure Shah Rukh is doing a great job.

'SRK is very brainy'
< = =text/>
January 24, 2007 13:59 IST

Meet the third participant on the new Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Mohit Mahipal hails from Hissar, Haryana. This 27 year old is a B Com graduate, is married and lives in a joint family. He is in business, dealing in photography goods like camera roll and paper to print photos.

"Everyone is a fan of Amitabh. His presentation was so nice that all liked it. In fact I had tried last season on KBC and got selected. I was supposed to come on the Amitabh-hosted KBC. But when Amitabhji felt sick Star TV promised me that whenever the programme starts, I will be given a chance and they kept their promise."

When SRK gave away his watch

Adds Mahipal, "You can't compare both the KBCs. Amitabh is special in his own way. His elegance, his grace and his style is unmatchable. Whereas Shah Rukh is the powerhouse of energy -- his level is different altogether. He is very humorous and witty. You can't compare the hosts, but at the same time you can't compare both the KBC's, as this (new one) is more for the youth; it's energetic and lively. The language has also changed, its now more Hinglish."

Big B or SRK: Who rules the hotseat?

When Mahipal was selected for the first time he was thrilled about getting to meet Amitabh. "I have been seeing his movies ever since I was a kid. I knew Amitabh's name even before I learnt my parents' name. He is one whom everybody likes. I was very disappointed when I got to know that the show got postponed."

"But my excitement returned when I got to know that I would get to meet Shah Rukh, as Amitabh and Shah Rukh are the top two names of the Bollywood industry. I was satisfied and something is better than nothing."

Review: SRK works it, and how!

Mahipal feels Shah Rukh makes the contestant feel at ease. "You don't feel he is such a huge star when you are sitting in front of him. I am a very introverted person, but he even made me speak about myself and when I requested him to say Devdas dialogues in Haryanvi he immediately obliged. Shah Rukh could manage speaking Haryanvi in broken manner because of his film Paheli where he spoke in Rajasthani, very close to my mother tongue."

Review: No high-fives for SRK yet

Mahipal thought there would be lots of retakes, but SRK gave retakes only when his voice was not clear or not recorded properly. SRK, he says, did not fumble much and that he is a one-take man.

"Shah Rukh needs a split second to think and say something really humorous and funny. I think anyone in his place would need so much time to think, but that is not the case with him. He is very spontaneous and brainy as he does all this without a script."

His friends had warned him about SRK's 'attitude,' but when he met SRK he did not find him like that. The superstar was very friendly, and hugged Mahipal several times. He talked like a normal man and was not at all proud. He made Mahipal feel totally comfortable.

Join the KBC Klub

"He walked up to me and started talking. He asked me about my family, where I live, what I do. All this was not recorded. This he did before I sat on the hot seat, in between the break, to know me and to make me comfortable. When during my questions I got stuck, he came and massaged my shoulder."

Mahipal believes the programme is a hit. "I loved the new KBC. But from the beginning of the first season of KBC, I felt the format is rock solid and the hosts are damn good -- they have their great fan following. Therefore this has to be a big hit."

When SRK gave away his watch

You watched him yesterday on the first episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Rama Krishna Guggilla, 35, is a rollover contestant, and we will see his remaining episode today, January 23. Read on to find why this episode is literally a must-watch.

Nicknamed Guggs by Shah Rukh Khan, he is from the Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh. Guggs did his MBBS from the Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad. He wanted to go to the UK, but due to change in immigration laws he couldn't go. Right now, he is studying to go to the US. He is married.

Guggilla has not watched the very first Kaun Banega Crorepati episodes but did watch a couple of episodes of KBC Dwitiya with Amitabh Bachchan as the host. He tried to get in on that show, but couldn't get through.

According to Guggilla, "Amitabh and Shah Rukh both have their own style, both are from different generations. I did not have any personal interaction with Amitabh Bachchan so I cannot comment much about him, but he was a good host."

Big B or SRK: Who rules the hotseat?

Guggilla was never a fan of Shah Rukh Khan though he has seen few of his movies like Baazigar, Kal Ho Na Ho and others; he had no preconceived notions. Review: SRK works it, and how!

He felt SRK was amazing and that he even looks younger and more handsome in person than on screen. "I find Shah Rukh Khan very friendly, brotherly and down to earth. Before meeting SRK, I thought he would have lot of airs and it would be difficult for people like me to talk to SRK. But once I met him, I found him very humble and cool. He was talking just like any ordinary person. I got to spend lot of time with him. He said lots of encouraging words to me. I shot on January 15 and 16."

Before the start of the shoot, the KBC music was being played, with Shah Rukh's new title track. Everyone was tapping their feet listening to the music. Khan, in his seat getting ready for the shot, got out and started dancing when he saw everyone enjoying the music.

Guggilla was thrilled, and couldn't believe he was seeing SRK perform live.

"Shah Rukh is very active, energetic and vibrant. The best part is he is very spontaneous, he really thinks on his feet. I had a very great experience with him. I was playing very well. We had a good interaction and had developed a good rapport with each other. Unfortunately, I couldn't answer one question. In fact I answered correctly initially but later changed it to the wrong answer."

Review: No high-fives for SRK yet

But the star made up for the error. "SRK felt so bad that he removed his wristwatch and gifted me. It is a Tag Heuer 2000 Aquagraph costing about Rs 128,000. I was so moved with this gesture that I was dumbfounded. I couldn't say anything. But once I came back I thought of giving him a gift back, it may not be as expensive as his but is very valuable to me and something I cherish a lot. It is a gold watch gifted to me by my wife on our wedding day. I am planning to meet Shah Rukh Khan this week, and I hope I get an appointment."

After the episode ended, Khan took him to his room. Guggilla thought it was a privilege as nobody was allowed to go to the room except the top brass. "He was so encouraging even then; he blessed me to become a good doctor. He told me that he use to constantly visit Toli Chowki in Hyderabad as a child during his summer holidays, as his mom is from Hyderabad and he has lots of relatives in Hyderabad. He also told me somethings about his past, his childhood and about how he has come up in life, which I am not sure, whether I can say. He may not like it."

Join the KBC Klub

"I personally felt he is a family man," Guggilla added. "He was very sentimental talking about his family. He was very concerned about my family too."

Ask Guggilla to rate KBC 3 and he said, "I can't say much about KBC 3. It's just one episode old but I liked it a lot. I feel the way SRK is hosting it is different from the previous one. I have seen couple of episodes of Who Wants To Be Millionaire. I found our hosts, both Amitabh and SRK to be the best. Plus now we have a KBC music video, which I think is first of its kind for this pattern of program. And SRK was great, he was rapping so well."

KBC winner skipped SRK show

The only one to actually make it from the KBC hotseat with a crore, Harshwardhan Nawathe from the game show had no time to see Shah Rukh Khan's KBC when it was aired on Monday night.

Nawathe, a resident of east Mumbai suburb Ghatkopar was busy in his work and didn't get time to watch King Khan's KBC.

Your say: Send in your KBC reviews

"I have moved on. I have my busy life today and I could not make it on time at home to watch television. So I missed it," he told rediff.

Nawathe, till date, is the only contestant on the KBC show to win the jackpot by winning Rs 1 crore on the show.

Review: No high-fives for SRK yet | Review: SRK works it, and how!

He won the jackpot on October 11, 2000 that happened to be Amitabh Bachchan's 58th birthday. Nawathe's programme was telecast on October 19, 2000 and he was 26 at the time. He was studying to appear for the Indian Administrative Service exam when he won the prize.

Until Nawathe's win, the highest any contestant won was Rs 50 lakhs, when R C Dubey, a Calcutta shopkeeper, answered 14 questions.

Soon after winning the programme Nawathe went into hiding because of sudden fame, and it was some time before he gave media interviews. A year after winning the programme, he moved to London for further studies and returned to India last year.

Join the KBC Klub

Without revealing much about his personal life except stating that he is working for a financial institution, Nawathe said, "It always feels good to be the only winner of Rs 1 crore till date. However, I am sure as time goes on there will be others who will win 1 crore and even more than that." The top prize money is now Rs 2 crore.

Asked about his opinion on Shah Rukh, Nawate said, "Shah Rukh has his own style in films and so does Mr Bachchan. I am sure he would be great on the show. It is wrong to compare both of them. I have not seen Shah Rukh's show, but I am sure he would be a good anchor, because he is a fabulous actor."

Interview: From Big B's hotseat to SRK's

Nawathe is more upset with mediapersons who want to keep him in the public glare. "I am not a celebrity or a sportsman to be in news all the time. The winning prize was one of the best moments of my life, but I have to look at my future. It is history now as that happened six years ago. I don't want attention all the time. I want to lead a life of a normal person."

"I have spoken everything I had to say in my interviews and therefore I keep off from media. The media attention gives me a lot of trouble in life; I get disturbed in my routine life. There is nothing rude or being arrogant, but I cannot let my life today suffer because of KBC," added Nawathe.

From Big B's hotseat to SRK's

When Shah Rukh Khan's Kaun Banega Crorepati goes on air on January 22, Prasenjit Sarkar will become part of Indian television history.

The 39-year-old inspector with Central Excise was in the hot seat before Amitabh Bachchan when KBC went off air in 2005, having earned Rs 80,000 on the show till then, and he will return to the hot seat before Khan come Monday.

"I have been lucky to be a part of two consecutive segments, including the changeover, what with the wait of a year for the show to begin again. It's unique and by God's grace happened to me. I feel I am the luckiest person in the country and may be the whole world."

The first to face questions from both the superstar-hosts of KBC, Sarkar is diplomacy personified when asked for his opinion of Bachchan vs Khan. "I can tell you my experiences with both. I can't compare them,"

Amitabh Bachchan left a lasting impression on him. "His personality is as tall as him. His baritone, impeccable dress and whole presence influence a man to the extremes. You seem to get overwhelmed, overpowered. To tell you frankly, the first time I met him I felt I was standing in front of Lord Almighty. Slowly but surely he eased me into the show. He has that capacity to ease contestants into the game."

About King Khan, Sarkar says, "I was touched by his enthusiasm, energy and he seemed to be the most friendliest person on earth. My wife was looking forward to meeting the new celebrity. My 11-year-old son is a diehard fan of Shah Rukh."

For the rest, there is nothing much coming out of him vis-'-vis the show.

How much money does he make on the show? "To know that you have to watch the show on the 22nd."

What about the show's look and feel? "For that you will have to watch the show on the 22nd. Your readers must wait for a few days to find out from themselves."

To rewind a bit, for Sarkar, getting on the show was a dream come true. "I have been trying to get into the show from KBC1 itself, when it started about seven years back. I kept trying. I kept calling from my BSNL landline on every episode, that's how I got a chance. But my luck brought me only in the 61st episode."

Although he was disappointed when the show went off air following Bachchan's indisposition, Sarkar says he knew it would be back, along with him. "Star TV had given me written confirmation that I will be the first person on the hot seat when the program starts again."

This time round, he adds, "I was less tense. When I went to KBC2 the first time I was not sure if I would get a chance to get to the hot seat or not, whether I will be the fastest finger but this time I had no such tension."

Finally, there is the question of what he will do with the prize money. "I am going to save part of it for my son's higher education and spend a bit of it for charity. There is a list of other things to do but will plan it later," he signs off.

SRK makes KBC work, and how!

So now we know what the nation -- or at least that section of it that has access to cable television -- will be doing between 9-10 pm Mondays through Thursdays: watching Kaun Banega Crorepati or, more accurately, Shah Rukh Khan, in his latest avatar as game show host.

Disclaimer: I am no Shah Rukh fan; his acting style, to me, resembles nothing so much as badly set jelly. But as a live host, he really has no equal -- the qualities his closest friends say are his strengths as a person, are precisely what he brings to the table here.

Send in your KBC reviews

Shortly before the premiere of KBC, circa 2007, I spoke to a cinematographer who has known him, and worked with him, extensively. He mentioned three traits: warmth, incredible energy, and a habit of talking 19 to the 12, with the gift of repartee thrown in.

Warmth, and an ability to convey genuine empathy with a contestant's fortunes, made Regis Philbin, advancing age notwithstanding, an unparalleled host of KBC's original, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Shah Rukh has both these qualities: he is warm as the weather, if not warmer; when he hugged carryover contestant Prasenjit Sarkar at the end of the latter's run, he held the hug long enough to have satisfied his closest friends.

And in his interactions with the contestants, there is -- or, as a competent actor, can portray -- genuine empathy, can suggest that he really wants the contestant to win the greatest amount possible.

Those two pluses would be enough to not just carry the show, but to lift it to a level higher than the previous anchor, Amitabh Bachchan, managed. But to this, Shah Rukh adds a run-at-the-mouth style laced with impromptu humour that has you chuckling even at the distant remove of your own home.

Those two traits -- humour and non stop chatter -- were in evidence right from the outset, when he segued into 'shudh' Hindi to underline the impossibility of speaking in it.

From then on, you upped the volume, and watched the show not so much for the contestants, but to make sure you didn't miss any of his impromptu moments.

Maybe it is good scripting, sort of like the guy who said he spends a lot of time preparing his impromptu remarks -- but his delivery is spot on, and there are occasional signs that he is riffing as he goes along -- like the time he walked around to the second contestant of the day and gave him a little massage to relax him.

Where Bachchan came across as imposing, even aloof, Shah Rukh if anything swings to the other extreme -- his 'gimme five', his teasing Prasenjit Sarkar's wife and trying to get her to say 'All the best, I love you' to her husband at the start of the show, his insistence that a contestant who has had enough doesn't say I am quitting, but instead says I want to hug you (Main tumse gale milna chahta hoon) -- it is all guaranteed to create in the audience the sense of watching a favourite friend do what he does best: be the life and soul of the party.

There were little moments of ersatz magic strewn through the show; enough to ensure that a sizeable section of the population will, here on in, leave work a half hour early so as not to run the risk of being stuck in a traffic jam while the show is on.

So what's not to like? That tacky song that introduces the segment, for starters, with Khan cavorting in the midst of a bunch of under-dressed babes -- eminently avoidable, and if it is the regular intro to the show, I'll pass.

Overall?

When Super Millionaire was launched in February 2004, the then struggling network ABC struck gold, drawing an audience of 17/5 million viewers on average and earning the rating of the most watched TV program on debut night -- and also for the next three episodes.

With Shah Rukh helming KBC -- and, likely, getting better as he eases into this new role -- a few viewership records will likely tumble.

Oh, and by the way, SRK's KBC will also be aired on Vijay TV for those who want to watch it in Tamil.

No high-five for Shah Rukh just yet

Shah Rukh Khan is a megastar -- one who has worked his way up with defiant can-do from absolute obscurity to Bollywood rungs so high up we didn't know they existed. We love him for his charm, his cheek, his unparalleled charisma. And his originality.

Which is why we wince a little when watching him fill Amitabh Bachchan's hotseat. Over the last year the actor has been visibly trying to do his own Bigger-than-The-B thing, doing a badly received Don and declaring great intent to remake Deewar. For now, he's trying out Mr Bachchan's game show, and the sleeves still seem a shade too long for SRK.

(For those who say comparisons shouldn't be made, hush. SRK wants the contrasts judged, and he wants to win. He's taking Bachchan head-on, with a superlative grand ambition you can't help but be awed by. King Khan is out to oust Emperor Bachchan, and he's rushing to the kill, Karan-tailored wardrobe blazing.)

Prem Panicker: SRK makes KBC work, and how!

Waiting in front of our television sets, things kicked off with significantly ill portent. A tacky music video, styled like Abhishek Bachchan's Bluffmaster, with an overdone English bit straight out of Amitabh's Namak Halaal soliloquy. Star TV, please tell us that this is just for the launch, and we won't have to sit through 'Rupa's baniyan' jokes everyday? Please.

Khan kicked off the show welcoming rollover contestant Prasenjit Sarkar, a man fortunate enough to share seats with both mega hosts. SRK introduced his new phrase, but it seemed very contrived: 'I won't lock, I'll freeze,' he said. Um, okay? Then came the Bangla-butchering. While both Khan and Bachchan are anything but maach-eating natives, Amitabh's sophistication shone through in his near-pristine attempts at any language -- then again, to be fair, he did marry into a very Bangla family.

All we ask of Khan is that he do his homework a tad better (he knew his first contestant ages in advance, after all), and maybe learn to pronounce 'Kolkata.' Or he could decide to leave the Bangla (and soon, the Telugu) out of the show, his attempts anyway tinged with a supercilious flavour.

The Kaun Banega Crorepati section

Which brings us to a major issue: Shah Rukh persistently tosses us a smirk we haven't quite deciphered yet. Is this condescension towards these contestants, nervousness, or defiance against the Big B? He started his show trying to get a laugh with overpure Hindi, and occasionally licking his lips in a clear show of nerves. We're used to him being irresistibly cocksure and full of great bluster, and this anxiety to please, nay outdo, isn't quite becoming of him. What say you, Compaq-garu?

Shah Rukh Khan is a wit, arguably the sharpest talker in Bollywood, both rapier-edged and articulate. That's what makes the prospect of this show so mouthwatering, but the major chunk of opening night banter was reserved for his forced attempts at creating catchphrases (what's with kachcha-pakka, really?) to replace Bachchan's iconic ones, his doubts ('Did you enjoy this?,' 'Hope I was good enough') and, most crucially, his trying way, way too hard.

Neither Bachchan nor Khan can ever be an everyman. They're far too massive. Yet Amitabh struck a perfect balance between awesome and accessible, coming across as a genial, niceguy superstar. Khan, with his massages and hugs, tries perhaps too hard to be one of the people, and doesn't yet look convincing enough. Is he throwing in too much too soon in an effort to win the viewers?

Join the KBC Klub

This is however a review based on one hour. An hour where a young star nervously tried to eclipse an icon. An hour where we saw Shah Rukh more unsure than ever. An hour where Amitabh Bachchan was decidedly not dethroned. But nevertheless, just the first of several hours.

Maybe it was just opening-night jitters. Shah Rukh Khan is a champ, a man who rises to the occasion and one who has made a habit of achieving the unthinkable. Give him a couple of nights, a couple of weeks and he'll hopefully grow into his own affable self, instead of trying to vainly be the Anti-Amitabh.

Good luck, SRK. But no high-five for you just yet.

KBC 3 rakes in Rs 130 cr, still counting

Kaun Banega Crorepati in its third season has raked in Rs 100-130 crore, with a little more than two weeks still to go before it goes on air in January.

The latest to join the sponsors' bandwagon for Shah Rukh Khan's KBC 3 are Pantaloon Retail (Big Bazaar) and Godrej Sara Lee, confirmed Paritosh Joshi, president-ad sales and distribution, Star India.

The repeat sponsors from last year's show are Airtel, Hyundai and Cadbury. After the recent bidding battle, Motorola has replaced Nokia, which was on board with KBC 2. The other new sponsors this year are UTI Mutual Fund, Videocon, Godrej Sara Lee, Jyothi Labs, Pantaloon Retail (Big Bazaar) and the UB group.

Star has sold ad slots for the show, which goes on air from January 22 at an estimated Rs 10-13 crore per sponsor, said sources.

"The reason sponsors have signed on with us because of the varied audience reach provided by the show. While cricket is high on uncertainty, KBC 3 does not fail to deliver," said Joshi.

Since the show has no title or presenting sponsors, the ten main sponsors will share the same mileage, roughly each sponsor will have 1 to 1.5 minutes visibility for each episode.

"While the sponsors names will appear on 'on-air' tags, all ten sponsors will not appear on each show. Also, the ten main sponsors will get sufficient outdoor mileage," he added.

With less then 20 days from the show, Star is yet to decide on the bank presenting the cheques. Sources said, the contenders are HSBC, ICICI Bank, Barclays Bank and Kotak (which was on board last year).

In addition, the show's 'computerji' is yet to be decided. During KBC 2, Lenovo was the integrated computer brand on the show. This year with Shah Rukh Khan being the host and also the celebrity endorser for Compaq, it is a tough call for Star.
