Star plans legal action against India TV
Subhash K Jha
There's absolutely no sign of strain at Star after India TV's allegations accusing Star's prized game show Kaun Banega Crorepati of underhand dealings.
In fact, Samir Nair, COO of Star, is amused. "What are these people talking about?" he says. "Everything on KBC was done according to the rules. The funniest thing was, they were offering a flat-screen TV to their viewers for sending SMS about the so-called scam on KBC. So much for their so-called noble intentions. We're certainly looking at serious legal action. The channel heads are having serious discussion on it."
Deepak Segal, executive vice-president (content) is more indignant. "No one from this channel tried to contact any of us at Star before going on air with this outrageous story," he says. "Isn't that ridiculous? This is just a fledgling channel's desperate efforts to get viewers. What do they mean by questioning a contestant's right to participate twice on the show? Of course anyone can participate twice! It's part of our rules. No contestant can come on the hot seat twice. If a contestant makes several attempts and he succeeds twice, that's his good luck. Who are we to grudge him that joy? Those pictures of the same contestant appearing twice that they're showing to prove their point have been released by us. Anyway, our whole selection process is audited by a reliable agency." Segal also scoff at the allegation that sections of people who're disqualified from participating in the show, have been allowed to do so. ""It's like saying people from Indian Airlines cannot be contestants on the show because they transport the contestants," he says. "Similarly, MTNL is just a conduit for us, because they have telephone exchanges all over the country. It's like saying the Electricity Board should be barred from KBC because they give us light on the sets during shooting! The only people not qualified to take part in KBC are personnel from Airtel and Star, and they've never been allowed to do so."
The underlying message of the allegations was that it wasn't Amitabh Bachchan's illness, but all these 'scams' that was the reason behind the show's abrupt termination. "That's really weird. Everyone knows Mr Bachchan is unwell," says Segal. "I'd say the word 'scam' applies more to what India TV is doing, than to us. This is a desperate move by a channel anxious to be watched. And if they are so sure of their facts why didn't they approach us?" Legal action is the next logical move. Says Segal, "Legal action is a must. At Star, everything is completely above-board. We might make mistakes, but we're not afraid to rectify them. The minute we got to know that contestants were misusing the telephonic system, we immediately put a limit on how many calls they can make. We're willing to learn on the job."
THE STORY SO FAR
On January 26 India TV went to town with a scoop on Star's Kaun Banega Crorepati. The channel made sweeping allegations against Star, of rigging and manipulating the show by letting people participate in the show more than once, etc. Star officials, who claim that they were not contacted by India TV before they aired their allegations, clear their stand here.
