Twelve hours after Amitabh Bachchan was operated upon, the superstar is under critical watch in the Intensive Care Unit at Lilavati Hospital.
Bachchan's condition is stable, according to the doctors, but he will be under observation for a while and any decision to move him from the ICU, on the sixth floor, back to his room, will depend on his recovery.
The hospital said in a statement late last night that ''Mr Amitabh Bachchan was operated for perforations to the small intestine (Diverticulitis). The operation was successful. He is stable now.''
One of the surgeons involved in the operation said this morning that a sample of the tissues taken from the small intestine has been sent for testing.
''Investigations conducted before the operation did not indicate anything more serious than Diverticulitis. But we have sent the sample for testing as a precaution,'' the surgeon said.

The surgeon explained that Diverticulitis is usually a condition associated with the large intestine and an infection of the small intestine is rare.
The team that operated on Bachchan was led by Dr Sadanand Shetty, gastro-intestinal surgeon. The others were Dr J B Agarwal and Dr Rajeev Shah, both also gastro-intestinal surgeons, and Dr P Jagannathan, colorectal cancer surgeon.
Jagannathan is also associated with S L Raheja Hospital and specialises in surgical procedures related to cancer of the intestinal tract.
Jaya Bachchan spent the night with Amitabh in the ICU. Abhishek along with sister Shweta Nanda and husband Nikhil left the hospital at about 1.30 am.
Amitabh's brother Ajitabh and close friends Amar Singh, Subroto Roy and Anil Ambani also left about this time
