Chapter 12: A Mother Always Knows

Komolika paced up and down in her room. She kept looking at her phone, waiting for a call. She didn’t want Anurag to come asking for the divorce papers so she decided to leave. She hadn’t signed them and wasn’t intending to do that either. She gulped. She knew she needed leverage to ensure Anurag didn’t leave her and she knew just how to get it. She had to bring it all down on him together, trap him from every side again. She rolled her eyes thinking about how much effort she had to put in to keep her marriage going, all because of that Prerna.

Her phone rang and an evil smile crept up on her face. She answered. “All set?” she asked on the phone.

Anurag stopped at the door and hid outside when he heard she was on call. He needed to know what was up. She wasn’t going to divorce him so easily for sure. He was sure she was upto something evil.

“Tum jaante ho tumhe kya karna hai.” She said slyly. She had gone over the plan many times yesterday and she wouldn’t tolerate any goof-ups.

“Main tumhe farmhouse pe milti hu.” she said before she cut the call.

Anurag clicked his tongue. He couldn’t understand what Komolika was going to do but he guessed it would have something to do with Prerna. He had to warn her. Something was going to happen in the morning only and he had to find out what.

*

Prerna quickly got Sneha ready for school. Mondays were always the toughest. Sneha didn’t want to wake up and get dressed so Prerna had to keep nagging her. She kept checking her watch. She had to go help Mr. Bajaj pack as well. She wasn’t feeling very fresh suddenly. Her heart was uneasy and she felt queasy. She wondered if it was just her fever acting up again.

Mr. Bajaj sighed and tried to find all his things on his own. He didn’t know where his travel kits were kept. He couldn’t find the blue shirt he wanted to wear. He couldn’t even find the suitcase he had asked the staff to keep in his room. He was about to leave the room and shout out to the staff for his suitcase when Prerna entered the room followed by the househelp with his suitcase.

“Mr. Bajaj, main aapka suitcase pack kar deti hu.” she said.

Rishabh took a step back as he watched Prerna pull out all the things he was struggling to find so easily. She knew exactly where everything was kept in his room. She was quite silent though. He couldn’t take his mind off his close confession last night. He wondered if she had understood. He hoped it wouldn’t make things weird between them.

“Prerna, aap thik hai?” he asked.

Prerna paused for a moment wondering if she should share her restlessness with Mr. Bajaj but then decided against it. She didn’t want to unnecessarily give him trouble. He must have so much on his mind already with their plan to move to London.

“Main thik hu,” she said with a small smile.

Rishabh knew she was lying. Prerna only hesitated when she was hiding something. He walked up next to her and stopped her from keeping his clothes in. He held her hand and turned her to face him. He was hesitant to do all this but he knew he had to. He hoped she wouldn’t mind and when she didn’t immediately remove her hand from his hold he felt like she had given him permission.

She looked away from him.

“Prerna, aap jaanti hai ki agar aap mujhe nahi batayengi ki aapko kya pareshaan kar raha hai toh main relax hoke nahi jaa paunga.” He said. “Kya hua?”

Prerna knotted her eyebrows. “Pata nahi.” she said, still looking away.

“Matlab kuch toh baat hai, right?”

“I don’t know, bas, subah se ek ajeeb si feeling pareshan kar rahi hai jese kuch galat ho raha hai.”

Rishabh narrowed his eyes. He couldn’t understand. He was having a peaceful morning after he had shared so much with Prerna. He didn’t understand what she was talking about. Was this about them spending the night on the same bed? He stopped his thoughts. He was really drawing the worst conclusions. He decided he would just ask. No more misunderstandings.

“Prerna, kya galat ho raha hai?”

“Pata nahi, mujhe bas-- kuch nahi hai-- Bas yuhi.” she said unable to understand what she felt.

Kukki who was standing at the door eavesdropping on her parents’ conversation seemed to have the answer, “Come on dad, Prerna nahi chahti ki aap jao, aur kya?” she said giggling.

Rishabh’s eyes widened as he looked at Prerna. Prerna still looked confused.

“Prerna bohot miss karegi aapko, isliye pareshan ho rahi hai.” Kukki said, hugging Prerna from behind and resting her head on her shoulders.

“Pagal!” Prerna said resting her head against hers. Rishabh still looked at Prerna wondering whether what Kukki said was right. Would Prerna miss him? She hadn’t denied it.

“Acha?” Kukki said going to Rishabh. “Toh nahi miss karogi dad ho?”

Prerna folded her hands on her chest and narrowed her eyes at Kukki.

“Aur tum yeh sab mein ku interested ho? College nahi jana?” she asked. Kukki giggled realising that Prerna was feeling shy.

“Uff Prerna!” She said rolling her eyes.

“Dad!” Kukki said, hugging him next. “I’m going to miss you! I wish you didn’t have to go.”

Rishabh smiled and hugged her back. “I’ll be back in no time.”

Prerna smiled looking at them.

*

Anurag tried to call Prerna but she wasn’t answering his calls. He was desperate to know Komolika’s plan and decided to push her into admitting it.

He entered her room and demanded the divorce papers. “Can I get the papers back?” he asked.

“Ofcourse. Main thode clauses aur add kar rahi hu usme. Diya ki custody meri hogi aur saari properties and business jo mere naam hai, usme se tumhe kuch nahi milega.” she said clearly.

“Okay.” he pursed his lips. “I accept. Kab tak mil jayenge papers?” he asked.

“Aaj shaam tak. Definitely. But kya pata shayad tab tak tumhara irada badal jaye.” She said smiling slyly.

Anurag rolled his eyes. “Ab agar main mar bhi jaun, tab bhi tumhare saath nahi rahunga.” he clarified.

“We will see.” Komolika laughed.

“Wese, kaha jaa rahi ho itni subah?” he asked. “Kahi chod du?”

“Chod toh rahe ho mujhe, aur kitna chodoge?” Komolika smirked. Knowing very well how to change the topic. She understood his act very well.

“Bas socha ki thodi help kar du. Fir toh poori life tum akele hi rahogi.”

“Kaun akele rahega woh toh pata chal hi jayega. Anyway, I’ll see you later, hubby!” she winked as she left the room.

Anurag banged his hand on the wall. He had failed to get any information from Komolika. He decided he had to reach Prerna before anything happened. He had no option left, he had to go to her office again.

*

Rishabh walked Sneha till the door. The bodyguard that Mr. Bajaj had appointed was waiting outside for her. Sneha unhappily frowned at him.

“Papa, aap wapas kab aoge?” she asked.

“In a week. Aur main aapke liye teddy zarur leke aunga!” he said with a smile.

“Okay papa!” she said, hugging Rishabh. “I will miss you.” she said.

He would miss her too. But he just couldn’t bring himself to say it. Why was everyone behaving like he was going forever and why was he feeling so bad leaving today? He was used to being out on business trips so often but he had never felt this low. No one had ever told him that they’ll miss him either. No one had even said bye to him before he left. It was that normal. Then why was everyone so emotional today?

He hugged Sneha and kissed her forehead. “Dhyaan se jana.” he said, waving back at his little angel.

He walked back to the table with a sigh. He sat down and picked up the newspaper as usual. Prerna took her place next to him. She wasn’t feeling hungry also. She wondered whether she was feeling so uneasy because of what Kukki said. Mr. Bajaj not being there was making her slightly nervous but she knew that it was important for him to go.

“Mr. Bajaj, kal jo humne baat ki thi aapko yaad hai na?” she asked.

“Kya?” he asked, putting his newspaper down.

“Main sachme chahti hu ki hum sab wapas chale jaye.” she said.

Rishabh placed a hand on hers. “And I told you yesterday also, jesa aap chahti hai wesa hi hoga. I will make all arrangements, don’t worry.”

“We have to act fast. Main nahi chahti ki Komolika kuch bhi kare.” Prerna nervously said.

“Aap bilkul tension mat lijiye. We just need to get Sneha’s passport made and we can leave. Give me 3-4 days. Maine already Mehra ko instructions de diye hai. He is getting everything ready.” Rishabh explained.

Prerna’s shoulders relaxed and for the first time this morning she smiled. Her brain had already started thinking about all the things she had to pack. She made a mental note to inform Veena about their decision and would offer her to come along if she wished to do so.

“Thank you Mr. Bajaj,” she said.

“My pleasure.” he said. Prerna knew that Mr. Bajaj was a man of few words but he didn’t know that even the few words he said was enough to calm her down. Just knowing that he is there with her was enough.

Rishabh ate breakfast quietly trying to figure out what Prerna was thinking. She looked quite low today.

“Prerna, main office jaa raha hu, waha se directly airport ke liye nikal jaunga.” he said getting up.

Prerna’s smile faded away as she realised it was time to say goodbye.

“Have a safe flight.” she said. Rishabh nodded.

For the first time, Prerna walked with Rishabh till the door. “Aapne saare files rakh diye the?” Rishabh asked.

Prerna nodded. “Please Mr. Bajaj don’t skip any meals.”

Rishabh smiled at her concern.

“Also, jab aap airport pahuche toh ek message kar dijiyega.” She said.

Rishabh wasn’t used to this kind of care. No one had ever asked him to do this. “Prerna main pehli baar travel nahi kar raha.” he said.

“Toh? Land karke bhi message kariyega.” She remembered.

“Toh yeh sab kisliye?” he asked, confused.

“So that I know ki aap thik hai.” She said.

“Par mujhe kya hoga?”

“Kuch nahi hoga.” She said, annoyed with his unnecessary argument. “But do you have a problem dropping me a message?”

Rishabh realised she was getting annoyed so he obediently shook his head. He could see the lines of worry on her face. God knows what she was thinking.

Rishabh stood at the door and looked at her. “Take care.” he said.

Prerna nodded. “You too.” He wanted to hug him but he knew it would be a little too much. So he decided to leave.

*

Prerna went back to her room with a sinking feeling. She picked up her phone to call the

office and tell them she wouldn’t come to work today. She saw 12 missed calls from Anurag. She couldn’t understand why he would call her so many times and then remembered that he was divorcing Komolika. But now why did he want to speak to her?

She tried to call him but his phone was unreachable. She decided to take a small nap so that she could rid herself of the uneasiness she felt in her chest.

*

Rishabh was troubled as he sat in the car. Prerna seemed so off since morning and didn’t even tell him what the matter was. He wondered whether it was because of their closeness last night? He couldn’t understand why all of it suddenly felt weird today. He made a few calls to make sure the passport work would be done at full speed. He had promised Prerna to make sure it was done fast. He wanted to see her smile again, without any care in the world.

His phone rang and he answered the call. His eyebrows knotted. “What!” He shouted.

“Kaha ho tum?” he asked.

“I want an address right now!” he said gritting his teeth.

“I don’t care!” Rishabh’s face had rage written all over them.

*

Anurag reached Bajaj’s office but found out that Prerna wasn’t coming into work. The receptionist told him Mr. Bajaj was flying to London today. He rushed out the door and drove quickly towards the house hoping Prerna was okay. He sent a quick prayer to Kali ma to protect Sneha and Prerna till he reaches them.

*

About 45 minutes later, Anurag frantically rang the doorbell to Bajaj house. The househelp opened the door and he asked for Prerna. She informed him that Prerna was resting in her room. Anurag was very scared. He rushed towards the first room he saw and shouted her name again and again. She wasn’t there in the first room.

“Prerna?!” He shouted as he checked another room.

He was about to enter the third when he saw Prerna storm towards him.

“Yeh kya badtameezi hai?” She spat through gritted teeth.

Anurag immediately cupped her face. “Thank god tum thik ho!” he relaxed slightly.

Prerna jerked his hands off her and angrily said, “Behave yourself Anurag!”

“Prerna tum galat samajh rahi ho, maine aaj Komolika ko kisi se baat karte suna ki woh kuch karne waali hai, so I was scared.” he said.

“Well, I’m fine!” She said. “And maine tumhe uss din bhi kaha tha, you don’t have to worry about me anymore.” She said folding her arms over her chest.

“Sneha kaha hai?” Anurag asked.

“None of your business!” Prerna spat.

“Prerna, Sneha kaha hai? Komolika kuch bhi kar sakti hai!” Anurag said.

“Wait.” Prerna said, realising the gravity of the situation. She called Sneha’s bodyguard but he didn’t answer. She called the driver who went to drop Sneha and he picked up. “Ji madam.” he said.

“Sneha ko aapne school chod diya tha na?” she asked calmly. She told herself there was no reason to panic.

“Ji madam,” he said.

Prerna cut the line and looked at Anurag. “Woh school mein hai.”

Anurag still wasn’t convinced. “Prerna, Komolika aaj bohot khush lag rahi thi!” he said.

“Maybe because she’s finally getting rid of you.” Prerna said sarcastically.

“Tum please ek baar uske school mein call karo.” He said, ignoring her sarcasm.

Prerna was getting worried now. Anurag looked very worried. She dialed the Principal’s number Mr. Bajaj had given her.

“Good morning Ma’am, This is Mrs. Prerna Bajaj,” she introduced herself.

“Good morning Mrs. Bajaj!” the principal said. “How can I help you?”

“Can you please check on my daughter once, Sneha Bajaj? She wasn’t feeling well this morning and I was a little concerned.”

“Sure, I will call her right away and you can ask her yourself.” she said.

She wrote Sneha’s name on a piece of paper and sent for her.

Prerna waited patiently on the line while Anurag tried to keep calm.

“Mrs. Bajaj,” the principal was back on the line. “I’m sorry but Sneha hasn’t come into school today.”

Prerna’s face lost all colour and she dropped the phone from her hand. Anurag held Prerna by her arms and asked her what the principal said.

“Nahi hai, school mein.” she gasped.

Anurag banged a fist on the wall. “I should have guessed. Komolika wouldn’t divorce me so easily.”

Prerna was fuming with anger and fear at the same time. “How dare she touch my child?” she said with tears brimming in her eyes. She picked up her phone in a hurry and frantically dialed a number. “Prerna, come on, we don’t have time to waste.” Anurag said, holding her hand and pulling her behind him. Prerna pulled her hand out of her grip. She needed Mr. Bajaj. She waited for him to answer. When he didn’t pick up her call she called the office.

“Ma’am, sir toh aaj office nahi aaye.” the receptionist said.

Prerna cut the call and tried calling him again. She needed to speak to Mr. Bajaj. He had said he was going to the office. Where could he be? She didn’t understand.

“Prerna, Sneha ki jaan khatre mein hai! Come on!” Anurag said, shaking her.

“I need to call Mr. Bajaj.” Prerna said.

“Main apni beti ko protect kar lunga.” Anurag said. “If you want to sit here and call him, feel free.” he said rushing out the door.

Prerna followed after him. She would try again from the car.

Hellooo People!

I know I haven't been updating quick enough and this update isn't even complete. But I won't leave it on a cliffhanger for long. Will update by Saturday with a super dramatic and epic Sneha Rescue Mission. 😆

I don't exactly know how this update is because I have watched 227 episodes of Qubool hai in 2 weeks and I am completely in Asad Ahmed Khan mode right now. I hope that hasn't affected this update. Next update will be better for sure. I know this might be a little bleh.đŸ€ą

Anyway, do let me know your views on the update! 😛
