A thought intrigued me- if Rural population resonate with shows like KZK or its characters. Though I have worked in some of the villages and underprivileged section living in urban society under various capacity but cannot claim that I know them inside out specially what they watch. So I thought why not make use of the vast knowledge space called internet:) I know, you must be thinking so much time I have, but fortunately or unfortunately I do have some time to kill and taking a break from a FF am working on :)

Alright, so I read a few articles and PDF reports, interesting read though about various kinds of viewerships. To avoid deviating from KZK, I'll just share an articles or today's TRP data , that we all think we know inside out (but the fact is we don't) and don't even need to. I was not very convinced that Rural Mass will root for something like KZK (I can be proven wrong in future), mostly because of the show time, their lifestyles and their belief (I too assumed), but it was better if I researched a bit instead of sharing just an assumption.

So below is an article from May, 2019, when KZK was at its peek (top of the chart)

https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/media/star-plus-kasauti-zindagi-kay-is-the-most-watched-show-in-urban-market-barc-data/69473668

Though KZK topped Urban Market but it didn't even exist in top 5 rural market. Also they prefer different set channels like Dangal, Big Magic and SP is at no. 4.. They prefer religious shows over drama and in drama category also KZK is no where. Below is the link to the article for its authenticity.

Top Programmes in Urban marketvie

Star Plus’ Kasauti Zindagi Kay with 6,571 impressions ended Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya’s dominance as the most watched show in the Urban market. Kumkum Bhagya was pushed to No 2 position with 6,117 impressions, followed by same channel’s Kundali Bhagya was at No 3 position with 6,073 impressions. Colors’ Naagin-3 was at No 4 position with 5,681 impressions. Sony Entertainment Television’s The Kapil Sharma Show was at No 5 position with 5,569 impressions.

Top Five Channels in Rural market

Dangal continued to dominate the Rural market with 7,06,761 impressions. Big Magic was at No 2 position with 5,90,455 impressions followed by Zee TV at No 3 position with 2,29,788 impressions. At No 4 position was Star Plus with 2,25,262 impressions and Colors was at No 5 with 1,64,489 impressions.

Top Programmes in Rural market

Dangal’s Mahima Shanidev Ki was the most watched show in the Rural market with 6,236 impressions followed by Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya was at No 2 with 4,967 impressions. Dangal’s Baba Aiso Var Dhundo was at No 3 position with 4,888 impressions followed by Zee TV’s Kundali Bhagya at No 4 with 4,633 impressions. Dangal’s Ramayan was at No 5 position with 4,561 impressions.

Now if top 5 show window is too small, lets have a look at todays impression breakup of KZK for rural market and urban market. Below is the link for the source of my information on BARC impressions for your ready reference.

We all from urban cities, with best of the education are actually the biggest fools to fight over a show like KZK, while RURAL market away from all this is nicely enjoying shows like above, just for fun and no TRP fights.

Its the URBAN public who is watching KZK, breaking into fandoms, ready to demean, mock at every given opportunity, only because of actors we love or like. This shows how biased we as URBAN people are.

Please feel free to share your views if you'd like to add or correct any data or add anything extra to it. Would love to hear more.. but please an earnest request lets maintain dignity in our words as we are talking to real people.

Thanks

Impressive study Sunshine👏👏 you've gone to such depths to analyse the viewership pattern.

What you're saying about underestimating/ mis judging the rural audience is very true. I come from a rural area and staying in a metro now. In my circle of family and friends back home, I hardly see people watching daily soaps nowadays, leave alone KZK. They're mostly into news channels or tuning into mythological shows or mostly Epic channel. And I know educated, urban people watching KZK. Again, this is what I have observed and I'm in no way generalising. Just my two cents on the topic:)

Nice post Meenakshi. Commenting before it gets locked or is turned into an ugly battlefield which this thread is fated to be.

The fact is, Urban TRP people will watch anything and everything that is given to them, which is why Ekta is brand today in India. Or headaches like Big Boss are super hit. People love to watch so, men and women alike.

Though I don't think it's anything to do with education or anything, but it's because of the availability of channels and the life that city life promotes than the rural life.

As Star gets the benefits after the revolutionary transformation from cable to dish, and hence is the most sought after with the packages they have, which again also explains urban viewership. Example Airtel/Tata Sky etc where there are packs catering to drama/sports/news Special packs only for Star channels.

Rural people, who have electricity and can afford cable dish, will watch what comes cheap to them, some don't even include Star channels in it. I have seen some packs of local dish cable like Siti and etc, that serves to villages here, even we have Siti cable, the pack we have; the cheapest (don't judge it's only because the only person watching tv in my house is my father😂) doesn't have any Star channels.

It us We the EDUCATED YOUTH of India & other countries who have the access to Internet, fight over fandoms, celebs, this that etc. Trp people be it urban or rural DO NOT CARE. 😆 explains why Supernatural show's are such a hit too though we all know what garbage that they serve. 😆

Any buzz is a good buzz and fandoms do the work that maker's want, fandoms get their satisfaction so does the maker's hence all is good in the hood. 😆

Ps as an urban viewer barring my obsession with my favourite, I would rather watch Arnab Goswami shouting his lungs out repeating the word "Put To Print" over and over again and again🤣😆 than watch any drama channels. That's what I have been doing for the last 6 years 😆 and shall continue to do because nothing is more interesting than politics in India😆 especially people debating their lungs off 😆 again that's me. 😳😆

Everyone has a choice and endless options to choose from. We can't even question anyone's preferences to be honest. But its unfair to generalise our preferences on Rural Market, specially when they are not so participative in expressing their views like we can. By the way I just noticed SP's highest TRP gainers are down at the bottom for Rural Market. They have lot many things to take care of.. not obsessed like us URBAN people :)

Thanks for sharing your views Soanz 🤗

True that is. It makes sense, because Urban public have easily accessible platforms and time (not everyone) to talk about fandoms too.. which is absolutely fine.. bas kabhi kabhi we get overwhelmed and go over board,. wo check mein rhe to fandoms can be interesting and fun.. is what I feel.. not everyone gets different views on one things (not just KZK but lot many other things too.)
