I agree - he's waiting for her to say the word and come to him the penance of her regret. He's waiting for her to say I trust you and then he'll start the chess moves accordingly. As soon as she's on his side, winning will become a lot easier. If his wife doesn't trust him, how terribly bad does that look on his image? As soon as she's on his side he has more of a winning chance!
