True portrayal of a mother in 2019

I feel like the portrayal of Mohini is so old fashioned. Her intense feelings of love towards one of her children (the son) - does that even happen nowadays in the sort of educated, rich Bengali family that the Basus are supposed to be? Also the things she gives importance to - she would rather have had a Komolika in their life than a Prerna, these are seeped in such old fashioned drama - it’s almost grotesque. Who sends mortgage papers the way she does and tries to force a young girls to marry an much older man by force? I don’t know if it ever happened but in 2019.

Contrast her with Veena. She stands by her daughters when necessary- like when Shivani for pregnant what was the point is punishing her for what is already done, and yet also makes it clear when they have crossed the line and she disapproves of their actions as she did during the Naveen track when she kept shouting at prerna and trying to change her mind. She tries to give her daughters strength without imposing her will on them. No parent is perfect and there have been instances when people have found her actions questionable.

But give me a veena any day over a Mohini!

They should have shown Basu's from rural place n Sharma's from urban place, it might have made a better sense. In rural India, I have seen obsession for sons. N people there do resort to any possible ways to stop the alliance that they don't approve of.

I agree

Don't mind but sometimes Mohini sounds like mentally challenged to me ( strictly my POV).

Regressive, yes. But not out of context. My cousin sister's marraige life is on rocks coz of her mother in law's possessiveness

And that woman is an army officer's wife and a phd .

So rural or urban is not a criteria here. It's extreme possessiveness and insecurity that results from a head which has lot of psychological issues.

I have limited exposure of bengalis other than form Jhumpa Lahiri’s books. But from what she’s written plus the fact that Mohini is the daughter of someone in the publishing industry and therefore seeped in a world of books...... I feel like this portrayal of her is out of sync with what underatans urban India has moved to...... She is soooooo regressive.

She is ready to get her children married to any aira gairas if they have money bank balance.

Its all about money to her, she might divorce moloy and run behind bajaj if moloy becomes poor.

She dnt believe in relationship if that relation is not filled with luxury life.

Moloy ne kaise shaadi kiya is aurath se... As he is totally opposite to her...poor moloy

Mohini is being portrayed as a block in AnuPre's relationship, but in reality I don't think any mother would be happy marrying off her son to someone like Prerna.

Mohini thinks that Prerna is behind her son's money and Prerna has done absolutely nothing to prove her wrong. Now if Prerna was let's say a doctor or a collector, I don't think any mother would mind her marriage with her son. Prerna has no aspirations beyond Anurag, her family needs money too, who pays bills of her mother and sister? I haven't paid enough attention to know if her sister has a job or they have their own business or not, if they do then we can correct this.

Money is not everything but Prerna did not really come out as someone who wouldn't enjoy the luxury of Anurag's money, you can see the difference between Prerna Sharma and Prerna Basu is expensive sarees and jewelry, her entry as Prerna Basu was in luxurious car when in reality her family didn't have their own home to stay.

Prerna's mom is an utter failure as a mother, did not encourage her daughters to work and make a name, both daughters got pregnant before they got a job, at least use precautions. Same goes for Mohini, although I don't believe they are responsible for their children's hormones

My take on both mothers is that both are stupid and make scene in family functions
