Ok so call me old school but this is what I think. The Catholic thing is a major factor.
I don't see this sailing easily for the same reason.
Another conjecture I draw is, the fact of that divide allows them to bond so closely, because somewhere down the line they know they shouldn't end up that way. And in the process they may even have feelings, god knows. But at least now, it's at a phase where you know the other one is not a potential so you are even more free and jovial with them.
