Ronit Roy's Christmas wedding

Television hearthrob Ronit Roy, better known as Star Plus' Mihir Virani of KYUNKI SAAS BHI KABHI BAHU THI and Rishabh Bajaj of KASAUTI ZINDAGI KAY, had a Christmas(December 25, 2003)wedding with Neelam. The wedding was solemnized in a typical Bengali fashion in Mumbai's Madh Island. Sharman Joshi of STYLE and XCUSE ME fame played brother to the bridegroom during the marriage ceremony. Of course, there was the real brother, actor Rohit Roy, too. Also present on this occasion were a host of galaxy stars both from television and Bollywood.

Mihir's' real-life 'Tulsi'

TV actor Ronit Bose Roy (Mihir of Kyunki Saas… and Rishabh Bajaj in Kasautii…) will finally
tie the nuptial knot with his actress-girlfriend Neelam Singh (Saans) on Christmas Day.

The suave Ronit, who was felicitated as the Popular Best Actor at the recent ITA Awards,
has to his credit over a dozen Bollywood movies including Jaan Tere Naam where he
played the lead.

Incidentally, Neelam has never acted with Roy in any venture. "We met for the first time
at a social event four years ago and hit it off ever since," smiles Ronit who is wont to
break the hearts of his ardent female fans with his marital plunge. "My first marriage was
annulled nearly 11 years ago. I have a cute daughter who resides in the US and still keeps
in touch with me," confides Ronit who has now been signed for two big banner films for
"supporting but challenging roles."

Actor Ronit Bose Roy revels his role as television's Golden Boy.

Ever since he stepped in as Mihir Virani in television's biggest soap Kyunki...for actor Ronit Bose Roy, life just hasn't been the same. True, the once sky high ratings of Ekta Kapoor's saas-bahu saga may have dropped, but that hasn't affected Ronit in the least. On the contrary, with the added advantage of a power pact performance as Rishabh Bajaj in Kasautii.... the actor is revelling in his role as television's most wanted actor.

While this ardent admirer of Russell Crowe and Robert De Niro looks forward to getting a few memorable roles like them some day, for now Ronit feels that the high point of his career has been playing the role of Rishabh Bajaj. While a lot of research went into the character, Ronit was advised by many not to go for it. That he did, despite all objections, and the rest, as they say is history.

It wasn't always easy though, for Ronit Roy had to come up the hard way. Nephew of Subhash Ghai, who learnt "many important lessons about films and life from him", Ronit started out as a model in Thumps Up and Vimal commercials. Films followed, along with his first hit with Jaan Tere Naam, but soon he faded into oblivion. It was only in 2000 he resurfaced in a small role in Aandhi, a serial on Zee TV.

Meanwhile, with success in show business proving illusive till Ekta Kapoor spotted him, Ronit put his other skills to good use. The engineer from Baroda's Sayaji Rao College served a stint in hotel industry following it up with a diploma in applied nutrition. He also set up a security Agency for films stars which brought him close to the likes of Aamir Khan who hired his Agency's services during the making of Lagaan.

A true Libran, Ronit admits to being frightfully religious. The actor is all praise for her while wife Neelam, who he married last December, he claims is another pillar of support along with his mother. "It is difficult to find a person as good and devoted as Neelam considering the errant lives most actors and actresses lead". While he has only just set up home on the work front, Ronit has already won the awards for Star Parivar's best Pati and Pita. And the latest feather in his cap is the Hero Honda Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actor consecutively.

Ronit attributes a part of his success to Smriti Irani, his screen wife Tulsi and feels audience appreciation is more important then raking in the moolah. Remarkably well grounded about his star status, he prefers to stick to a few friends in the industry. That's when he is not putting in long hours at the gym, something that gives him energy to work for up to 14 hours a day, slipping in and out of roles with practised ease.

For Ronit, though, there's more in the offing. The talented actor can soon be seen in a Siddhant Cinevision serial where he is particularly excited about his role as a dual personality. Films have also started to come his way and the one to look out for is Subhash Ghai's Kisna. "I'll chase my goals till the end" avows Ronit, determination writ large on his face. And judging by his never- say-die attitude, you can't help but believe him.

As Mihir on the hugely successful soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Ronit Roy is Indian television's most wanted heartthrob. Having started his acting career in Bollywood with Jaan Tere Naam, Ronit tried his hand at a few films, before opting for other career options, including the launch of his own security company. It wasn't long, though, Balaji Telefilms chose him to play Rishabh Bajaj in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, a coup that he followed up by bagging the much-coveted role of Mihir in Kyunki... His career at an all time high, Ronit is now looking forward for his forthcoming serial: Sarkar. His wife Neelam, according to Ronit, dispelled all his fears and apprehensions about remarrying. Neelam who previously acted in such serials like Saans and Banegi Apni Baat gave up her acting career once she met Ronit and lived with him for a year before their wedding. Today, she single handedly takes care of Ronit's home and business, managing his dates, schedules, taxes and holidays, with lan.

RONIT ON NEELAM:

Ours is quite the regular love story, where boy meets girl and after a few years of dating, they get married. I met Neelam through a common friend at a party. Since she was into acting and modelling at that time, we had quite a few friends in common and would bump into each other often at different parties and shoots. I found her a very warm and loving person right from the beginning.

Slowly, we started interacting and staying in touch and after six months or so, we had our first date. Besides I had been married earlier, I'd also gone through another failed relationship, so when I met Neelam, I wasn't really ready to commit to marriage or anything serious. No matter how hard you try, a failed marriage does leave behind some amount of bitterness, so in that sense I was carrying around a lot of emotional baggage when I met Neelam.

Neelam however was very patient. Not once did she push me towards a decision and just let things take their own course. In fact, she was confident that things would work out fine and ultimately that's exactly what happened. I give her full credit for reaffirming my faith in marriage and commitment. In Neelam, I found a well-rounded human being who is very much in touch with her roots. She is very focussed and dedicated and her love for me is all too obvious. Takes care of everything for me----my house, my mother, my clothes and even my Given my crazy schedule, she could easily complain about my work hours, but she never does, taking everything----the adulation and the responsibilities----in her stride. Infact I call her the CEO of my life. She takes care of everything for me----my house, my mother, my clothes and even my appointments. She is responsible for having changed my life so drastically and in such a positive way.

NEELAM ON RONIT:

I took a liking to Ronit at our very first meeting, later we fell in love and ultimately married on Christmas day last year. Since Ronit and I lived in for a year, things are much simpler now. We really didn't had to go through the problems of adjusting, for all said and done, no matter how long you know someone, living together is a different ball game all together.

Of course, there were a lot of problems from our families. But Ronit and I had complete faith in each other and so we went ahead. I have immense faith in God and believe what is to happen will happen. I guess having a live-in relationship was my destiny and so it turned out that way. However, marriage hasn't necessarily changed anything, in the sense I came back to the same house. What changed, however, was people's perceptions and now I see my neighbours and acquaintances looking at us with more respect. In any case, I wasn't worried that things would go wrong, as I was confident about our relationship and Ronit.

As a person Ronit is very reserved. He is very caring and genuine guy. Unlike most others in this industry, even if he's done something wrong, he is totally open and forthcoming about it. People say popularity changes a person but that's not true for Ronit. He has always been the quiet, reserved kind, who needs to be nudged and brought out of the shell.

In our lives too, his popularity may have changes the quality of our lifestyle but not the way we live. He still loves home made food, spending time with family and parties at home. However, these days he stays very busy, which can rather get irksome but I try to spend as much time with him as possible. I usually take lunch from home for him and on Valentine's Day, we lit candles in the make up room and celebrated the occasion.

I stopped taking acting assignments soon after I met Ronit. He'd always made it clear that he didn't want his wife to work and personally, I wasn't too keen on it either. I am happy managing our home and family business, and in the latter, I end up doing most of the work, as Ronit can't dedicate much time to it. Ronit and I have a lot in common, but what stands out the most is our love for Goa. Whenever he can take a few days off, we fly down there. In Goa, Ronit undergoes a complete transformation. All of a sudden, he becomes this completely changed guy, who is chilled out, romantic and fun. May be that's because there aren't any pressures on him there but that's how I want him to be always.

Straight from the sets of Kzk @ Sankaraman.

All of you must be remembering the most recent engagement ceremony of our dearest Bajaj with Prerna. This is what happened at the set. Shweta's was ok but Ronit's ring finger was already engaged with his real engagement ring. Everybody out there asked him to take it out but he refused. So Shweta and party were like "o o o o o O" just to tease Ronit. There was no other option but to put the ring on top of his real ring. Shweta and Neelam are friends in real life so later in the evening when Shweta discussed this with Neelam, Ronit expected Neelam to take his side but Neelam and Shweta made good party and Ronit was again bullied by both. This was too much. Now he was angry and just when everybody became serious Ronit started laughing. What say wasn't it cute?

I'm on the brink of a boom time - Ronit

He wanted to become a fighter pilot but instead chose to make a career in the big bad world of glamour and acting. His career took off with "Jaan Tere Naam", a silver jubilee hit, but it soon hit an air pocket and went into a tail spin. But he has the roaring spirit of a fighter pilot. He held on. Came out triumphant and scaled new heights. Meet Ronit Bose Roy, popularly known as Rishabh Bajaj from 'Kasautii Zindagii Kay" and Mihir Virani from 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. He loves cars, practices loyalty and lives one day at a time. In an exclusive interview he spoke with Ronnie Shah for the Hitavada. The excerpts-

Q: when were you bitten by the acting bug?
A: I was always attracted towards the glamour and the lifestyle of film stars. All this razzmatazz and flashy cars and spotlights pulled me towards it. I was never into acting. In fact, I was stage shy. I never acted in school or college. But always longed to experience the lifestyle of the rich and famous. So after completing my engineering and hotel management, I came to Mumbai to pursue my dream. I'm from Ahmedabad . When I was there, people around me used to say-'you are a good looking guy. Why don't you become an actor?' So their comments fuelled my desire. Today, I would easily give away all I have if I have a chance to become a fighter pilot.

Q: What happened after 'Jaan Tere Naam'?
A: After the success of 'Jaan Tere Naam', I thought I'd arrived. But things took a down turn. My first marriage was on the rocks and I was practically living out of the suitcase moving from one place to another doing odd assignments. Maybe things happened too fast and too soon for me. I couldn't handle my life and I take all the blame for all the mistakes that were made because I firmly believe that it's your action and your deeds that lead you to a particular situation. But then que sera sera. Whatever is destined to happen will happen. My ex-wife and I decided that the marriage wasn't working out for us and so we decided to part ways. That's my past. I've left my past behind me and I don't think about it much now. So there was a slump of about five and a half years after my initial success.

Q: How did you rise back?
A: Besides doing the odd assignments I was getting, I started a security and protection agency called 'Ace security and protection'. My company provides security and protection to film stars and film units. Gradually my business picked up. And
till today, my company has provided security to many big projects. For instance-'Lagaan' where we had to manage big crowds.

Q: How did your second marriage happen?
A: After my first marriage, my life was pretty simple .It revolved around my work, and my daughter from my first marriage whom I love very much. I had no complaints in life and was moving on pretty smoothly. I then met Neelam Singh who brought love back into my life. I started leaning on Neelam for her love and support. My family members advised me that I should marry her. A year ago, I got married to her and life has been wonderful ever since.

Q: You are practically shooting from dawn to dusk, how do you manage
your career?
A: My wife is my CEO. Neelam was a model and has acted in a few serials. So she knows how the system works. She manages my security business and my finances. So I've got the best CEO who works for me for free.

Q: Which character is closer to your heart, Rishabh Bajaj or Mihir
Virani?
A: It's like choosing between two children. They are like my two hands. But I would choose Rishabh. Rishabh was a dish which I had to prepare from the beginning- buy the vegetables, chop them, cook them, make the dish look and taste good whereas Mihir was a readymade dish served to me on a platter. So Rishabh's character excites me more and is closer to my heart.

Q: Your next project 'Swarth' is already creating a buzz in the
industry. What've you got to say about it?
A: 'Swarth' is again a very interesting and exciting project. It's totally different from what's being aired on channels currently. It
should be on air in a couple of months on Zee TV. Shobha De has written it. My younger brother Rohit is also acting in it. So I'm
pretty excited about it and feel that I'm on the brink of a boom time!!!

From The Edge Of The Abyss

Published: Volume 13, Issue 1, January - February, 2005

I partied hard, drank like crazy…I would report for work with bags under my eyes and a massive hangover. I was on extreme overdrive. I wanted to drink it all up in a single gulp.

Like the legion of adventurers before him, he too came to Mumbai in search of the moon. For a brief moment, he got both his hands on it…then it slipped away. Today, Ronit Roy has finally found his slice of sky on television, playing the much-talked about Rishabh Bajaj and Mihir Virani in two popular soaps. Madhulika Varma meets the actor who both lost and found himself, on the spiralled road to success.

Even today, his direct gaze falters, as Ronit Roy recalls his slow descent into the abyss. He could easily dismiss the past because, today, Rishabh Bajaj is one of television's most talked-about characters... and Ronit Roy is a star.

As a darned goodlooking little boy in Ahmedabad, he wanted to be a film hero like Bruce Lee and Amitabh Bachchan. When he was 19, his dad bought him a ticket to the town he'd dreamed about all his life. Mumbai. The address he gave him, belonged to an old friend, a man called Subhash Ghai."Ghaisaab is like my father,"

"Ghaisaab is like my father," Roy explains. "I couldn't question his authority, so I put my dream on hold and worked my knuckles down, cooking, bartending, cleaning, waiting tables… sometimes, when the heart sank in despair, I'd throw a mild tantrum....Then Dad died." It was as if he'd stepped on a high-tension wire.

He recalls, "I returned home and told Mr Ghai I wasn't going back to Sea Rock. The next day, I joined Mukta Arts (Ghai's production house) as the 11th assistant director on films like Hero and Karma. For the next few years I fetched the paan and the props."

And then that call came. The one he had been waiting for virtually all his life. Director, Deepak Balraj, had seen him in a shampoo ad and wanted to cast him in a romantic musical, Jaan Tere Naam.

Jaan Tere Naam was a success. From the perennially short-of-funds assistant director in scruffy shoes, he was 'Ronit Roy', the rising new star. "Girls recognised me on the streets, women left lipstick marks on the bonnet of my car and the glossies called to line up interviews. This was my dream. I wanted to be a star. For the fame, the big bungalows, the adulation…I wasn't one of those guys pursuing a consuming passion for acting," he says candidly. And, now, he'd tasted blood.

He bought his first pair of shades and a Mercedes Benz and dived into the wicked world of the rich and famous. "I partied hard, drank like crazy…I would report for work with bags under my eyes and a massive hangover. I was on extreme overdrive. I wanted to drink it all up in a single gulp." he cringes. And, so began the slow drift into darkness. His wife was flung into the vortex with him. He remembers that night, "I packed up all my fancy gear into my Mercedes and left." Some nights he would sleep in his car. Or find a hotel and drink himself to sleep, and go shoot in the morning. Or party with friends till the early hours of the morning. "Anything to escape myself. There was no sense of self, no introspection, all the lights were out. It was as if I had taken an eraser and I was rubbing out my own existence."
