Sneha looked at Mukti in shock and for the first time since Mukti had stepped into the room Sneha analyzed her appearance. She was wearing a faded blue hospital gown, her arm was in a cast and she had a bandage wrapped around her head.
Sneha stood silent for a moment and finally broke the silence by softly saying, "I know where your mother is."
"Really?!" Mukti said excitedly. "Where is she?"
Sneha raised her arm to point out of the window. "The-" her voice faltered. "There's your mother."
Mukti looked out the window to see her concerned mother. "Thank you! Thank you so much! I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't told me who my mother was. I'll never forget this." And with that she raced out of the room.
"It seems as though you have forgotten everything else Mukti." Sneha whispered quietly to herself.
"Maa!" Mukti called out excitedly.
Maa? Why is she calling me 'Maa'? Prerna thought, bewildered.
Prem noticed she was wearing a hospital gown but before he could say anything Prerna spoke.
"Maa?"
"Yes, you are my mother right?" Mukti inquired, now getting confused.
"Yes, I am like a mother to you, you usually call me Choti Maa. Are you okay?" Prerna asked noticing her bandages and hospital gown.
"Alright, Choti Maa." Mukti said while smiling. "The doctor said I have am…amez, no… ameesha? She looked trouble for a moment and then her eyes got wide and she smiled. "He said I have amnesia."
Prerna could not speak and tears were threatening to roll down her face. Prem simply stood there, rooted to the spot, unable to move or say anything.
Before either of them regained there voice, another voice was heard. "Madam, you are not permitted to leave your room. You need bed rest."
Mukti rolled her eyes as she said, "But it's so boring!"
Just like my Mukti. Prerna thought as she and Prem smiled at her.
Prem and Prerna apprehensively entered the doctors office.
"Come in Mrs. Bajaj," the doctor warmly welcomed.
"I would like to know what happened to Mukti." Prerna said concerned.
The doctor sighed and said, "Mrs. Bajaj, I'm sorry to say but Mukti has experienced head trauma."
"Just tell us what your getting at!!" Prem snapped.
The doctor looked slightly taken aback but she continued nonetheless.
"Mukti has forgotten everything"
"What do you mean everything?" Prerna asked wide-eyed.
"She does not remember who she is, where she is and who her family is. And looking at her CAT scan it doesn't appear to be short term"
Prerna gasped as she put her hand to her mouth in shock.
Prem sat there, still as a statue not uttering a word and not moving an inch.
"I understand this is a lot to digest, but you are going to have to be very careful."
Prerna shot a confused look at the doctor.
"Any serious shock or stress could..." she paused for a moment trying to bring herself to say it, "...kill her."
