'Kasautii..' weaves a plot to tap the popularity of Manoj Bohra and Tina Parekh.

Audience feedback to the young lead pair of Manoj Bohra (Prem) and Tina Parekh (Mukti) in 'Kasautii Zindagi Kay' (Star Plus) has been very positive. Balaji is cashing in on this pair and giving a happy ending to their romance, for now!

Viewers tuned in to the show will know that Mukti has decided to sacrifice her love for Prem as she sees it as the only way to unite Prerna (Shweta Tiwari) and Mr Bajaj (Ronit Roy). A series of twists and turns results in Mukti eloping with Prem and they get married in the episode to be aired this Friday.

That both Tina and Manoj love the characters they play in the show, adds to their performance. "It is a brilliant role and I love the screenplay. This week shows me in a catch 22 situation and, I too, would have reacted in a similar way in real life. It is all about keeping our family in mind as we take important decisions, without being a rebel," says an enthused Tina.

Manoj describes Prem as "one passionate lover". Glad that his work is being appreciated, he says," I play an unusual character in a very usual saans-bahu drama. I am fascinated enacting the range of emotions he goes through in his work, love and financial dealings. I would also do the same for my love."

Designer male

Anil Merani
Posted online: Friday, September08, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

If you thought that fashion was only for the fairer sex, think again. Men too are preening over their looks and clothes like never before. Screen talks to some of the best-dressed male TV stars...
Anuj Saxena feels that that the entire male fashion scene has really come of age in India in the last five years thanks to liberalization and the all pervasive influence of the mass media. Gourav Chanana points out that the market is full of gents' toiletry and grooming products which woman are forcing their men to buy as they want their partners to look the best hunk around.

All male stars feel that it's very important to dress well, especially for people in their line of work. Says Cezzane Khan, "One wrong move here and you could suffer very badly for the next day papers' will tear you to shreds." Anuj seconded Cezzane by saying that if only you look dapper, do you get roles out here, after all who would want to cast a badly dressed person in their serials.

When it comes to formal wear, Ronit Roy prefers dark linen(best fabric for Mumbai weather) suits, Anuj says he has classified his suits for office , formal and party wear (different for corporate and filmy). Although Hiten Tejwani does not like to dress formal, he does turn out in funky grey and black suits to parties, for he has to look as good as his better half, Gauri.

A perfect suit would be incomplete without a contrasting tie(pink on a black suit) adds Iqbal Khan. Hiten will never leave for a hep party without his pin tuck. Simlarly, Ronit just loves to show of his flashy Italian watches. Gaurav makes sure his imported suit perfectly matches his high end shoes.

Anuj tries to make sure that he avoids wearing the same suit to two parties, for that's just not done. Hiten says that the same fear forces him to go shopping regularly. Iqbal says that he tries to get past this mess by mixing and matching his outfits.

Iqbal Khan and Ronit Roy dress to impress their respective spouses while the single guys obviously want to impress the fair sex with their fashion style. Anuj while not denying the importance of the approval from the opposite sex, says that if he feels that he looks good in a particular outfit, he will wear it, even if some one else does not like it.

Cezzane loves to be casual because on the sets he is always dressed in formals. He is most happy when he can wear his low waisted denims and colorful cotton polo neck Tees. Even Iqbal is a casual dude, who's favourite bottoms are cool khaki cargoes, which he wears over plain solid coloured long sleeved shirts. Both these guys just love to splurge on big buckled leather belts and fancy boots.

Besides the shoes and belt, today, TV stars look hep adoring designer shades, (Anuj) feng-shui bracelets (Gourav), disco gold chains, rich looking leather wallets (Ronit Roy) and of course, the high end mobile phones. These hunks also have a very huge wardrobe of chic ethnic threads as well, rich embroidered churidar kurtas, dazzling sherwanis with the works, achkans and designer dhoti, you name it and they have it. However, as Anuj put it, we can only wear such great Indian clothes at a close friend's wedding or a pooja, for the rest, we have to do with our western clothes.

When asked how they feel about the dressing style of their on screen characters, Cezzane said that he likes Anurag Basu best in dhoti kurtas, Anuj picked his Kkusum character while Ronit Roy said Risabh Bajaj is the epitome of chic formal wear, "even at night you wil see him in expensive gowns only".

All of them said that they really work hard on maintaining their looks by regularly visiting salons for massages, bleaching and other beauty treatments. Ronit Roy here was the sole dissenter who said that he does not do manicure or pedicure. "It's not that I am against metro sexual men, it's just that I find it more easier to cut my nails at home," he states.

As far as their crowning glory is concerned, Ronit keeps experimenting between the short and long crop and currently he is keeping the good school boy image. Anuj loves to colour his hair as that gives him a new look and at times he also sports a small ponytail.

Seen it before?

The dj vu is not hallucinatory. It's just television directors running short of ideas. Be it sets, costumes or scenes, different frames in serials mirror popular film sequences. Evidently, the resemblance is not coincidental…

Kasautii Zindagii Kay begins as the love story of Prerna and Anurag, but turns into Devdas somewhere along the way. Cezanne Khan aka Anurag Basu is recognisable as the handsome, soft-spoken son of a rich father, while Shweta Tiwari aka Prerna is Paro, who gets married into a rich family and a husband she never loved. Yes, her much older husband has three children from his previous marriage, quite like in Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay' s novel.

The Barjatyas draw from their own, and their friends', films. Their serial Pyaar Ke Do Naam-Ek Radha Ek Shyaam mirrors films like Hum Apke Hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge et al. Pyaar… shows wedding sequences, complete with sangeet and antakshari ceremonies, that characterise Rajshri productions. Recently, the lead pair Indraneil Sengupta and Barkha Bisht unabashedly put on a Shah Rukh-Kajol (and sometimes a Salman-Madhuri) act.

Shweta Salve of Left Right Left is the middle-class man's Sushmita Sen. Be it the way she uses her eyes or her flowing chiffon saris, psychiatrist Dr Ritu Mishra's character takes up from where Sushmita Sen left off in Main Hoon Na. The serial is a take on life of cadets at a premier military academy, and Shweta plays the muse for the young students just like Sush did so in Main Hoon Na.

Aishwarya Rai in Devdas and (inset) Prerna strikes a similar pose in Kasautii...
Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and (inset) Check out the mandolin scene in Pyaar Ke Do Naam...

Telly's whole nine yards
With TV sarees taking over the market, we take a look at the more 'zara hatke' styles
Ramya Sarma

Odd as it may sound to some of us, television soap operas are now becoming the fashion bible. The styles of various women and men are often slavishly copied by the viewing public and clothing stores. In fact, some of the sarees worn by the TV stars are sold in the stores that they were sourced from, the price at a premium because of the cachet of having been worn by Tulsi or Kaveri or Priyanka.
Today the heroines of TV are better dressed than the average woman on the street. The younger ones start out in tummy-baring tops with tiny skirts or low-rider jeans and then graduate slowly into tight-fitting kurtas with interesting necklines and then, when they are married, morph into more demure saree-clad damsels, albeit not quite of the sati-savitri mould. Some become style icons for millions of couch-spuds glued to their remotes after 9 pm. These include…..

Tulsi Virani in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'
She started out in a saree and still wears one. But from the pretty crepes and gara-like embroideries, the now-matriarch Tulsi is seen in heavy cottons with solid borders, large checks or stripes and traditional weaves. They make her the amma she now is, the grandmother who is trying to regain her family and its values, worn with high necked blouses and long sleeves.

Meera Singhania in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'
Though now dressed in white and blue jail garb, she was once quite the vamp with her wardrobe. Her sarees were worn with a very short pallu, cascading in a gentle ruffle effect down her right side. Bright colours, vivid embroidery and exotic blouses with off-shoulder effects made her evil act even more effective.

Priyanka Lamba in 'Viraasat'
The blue saree with large circles of sequin work has already caused a noise. Her characteristics are the bright colours, extravagant
embroidery and skimpy blouses — do newlyweds from wealthy families really dress like that even in broad afternoon sunshine?

Tara in 'Saat Phere'
It may have started out to cover an accident with food, but the slim body drape with its long, thin pallu worn over the right shoulder, held in place with a large ornamental pin (or is it a political party affiliation rosette?) would have the Coorgis shuddering. Of course, the style mandates thin-strapped blouses, and allows a tumbled-hair style.

Kaveri in 'Saat Phere'
Is that a mosquito net or someone's sheer curtains? The heavily worked net sarees have their place somewhere, but where we haven't yet worked out. They certainly deserve the sexy corset blouses worn with them and are spun in gorgeous colours. Of course, we are still trying to understand the significance of the plaque glued on to the upper arm…oh, sorry, was that supposed to be a tattoo?
