"Miss Basanti…" Prem acknowledged her with that arrogant tilt of his head that made women swoon.
"Prem?" Mukti asked, still not believing her yes. OMG!! Why did stuff like this always happen to her! Just when she thought she had found herself at last, she meets the man who had made her question who she was. And she couldn't have anyone know where she was.
"O'course. Once again Miss CID I'm amazed at your detective skills but then tum Miss CID toh ho na? Always poking your nose into people's affair and going back to your supervisor Mother India to report."
Mukti opened her mouth to reply but was jolted when Karan Kaka asked, "Areh bheti tum Premji ko jante ho?"
Turning around to face her uncle she answered, "You could say that Uncle."
Prem smiled. "It's a good thing he is your uncle. I thought you just came here to make my life a hell. And areh wah you look different."
Mukti didn't know how to reply back to that. "Um, thanks. I have a new haircut since you last-"
"No. Your eyes look further apart. Did you do something new to it?"
Mukti sighed. O'course she should have known Prem was not going to complement her.
"Bheto beta. Kyun uth rahein ho?"Karan put in.
"Ha ha UD. Bheto. Areh kyun stand kar rahein ho. Tum toh the great Prem ho. Bheto. Please." Mukti said sarcastically.
He smirked. "Sarcasm is my thing. It doesn't suit you."
"Nahin kya suit karta hein?"
"You in my bed."
Tick-Tock. Mukti swore she could hear the pin drop in the room since it was so quite in there. She felt her face heat up as her cousins and uncle looked at her in surprise. She wished the ground would just open up and swallow her. She had no idea how to reply back to that. She cleared her throat.
"Mommy! Mein agaya!!!" Prem swiveled his head to turn around to who was screaming. As the butler opened the door a little boy about the age of four or five came running in with a dog following in his heels. The boy stopped as all the grownups eyes were on him.
"Mein agaya mommy," he said shyly and ran to his mommy to hide.
Prem turned his head in shock to stare at Mukti. And for that first time Prem noticed Mukti was wearing a plain white sari. She had no accessory and no makeup, nothing. Looking down at the boy hiding his face in her sari Prem realized that his Mukti was married. No wait a widow. As he stared at the mother and the son he put his hands in his coat's pocked and fingered something he had treasure forever. For five years that thing had kept him sane. A tattered picture of him and Mukti in the prom holding each other in a tight embrace.
Mukti was jolted out of her thoughts when a book fell from the chair. Realizing now that she was drenched and it was raining she went in to escape her thoughts from Prem.
Across town Prem went in to his room and looked at the picture he had on his nightstand and fingered Mukti's almost fading picture.
Kris still pissed of at Prem for asking that favor from him knowing that he had never gotten over what had happened years ago walked towards the shaded hallway.
He stopped when he heard a feminine voice.
"Areh chodo mujhe Shravan…" the voice said.
A masculine voice, presumably the man named Shravan's replied back, "Nahin mujhe pata hein ki tum kya karoge. Its no use."
"Shravan mein ke rahin hoon kein mujho chod do. I don't give a damn about what you are going to do I-."
Kris smiled at the gust in the girl's voice.
"No!! I won't let you."
"Shut up!! Shut up!! I hate you!"
He could almost imagine the girl jumping up and down.
Then Kris heard a slap. He froze cold.
"Ow! Tumne mujhe mara…"
As he went in to intervene he heard someone groan and a fist connecting with flesh. The light was little brighter here. He saw a girl leaning down to see a man's body.
"Are you okay ma'am?" He asked.
The girl looked up in surprise. She was very beautiful and was biting her lips.
"Do you think I killed him?" she asked.
He went and checked for the man's pulse. "He is fine but I do hope you know CPR because you take my breath away."
She laughed. "Haha. Such a male thing to do. Hit on a damsel in distress."
"Tum damsel in distress to nahin dhekti ho?" Kris smiled. "You knocked the daylights outta this fella."
She smiled. "Well he asked for it. By the way thank you. What is your name?"
"Kris. And yours?"
"I was hoping for a phone number." She replied with a twinkle in her eyes.
He felt himself get interested. "Sure. Its 1-800-IWANNABEHOT. But your name?"
"My name is Kasak."
He froze. "Kasak? Kasak Bajaj? Rishab Bajaj's daughter?"
She stopped smiling. "Kuch wrong hein Kasak Bajaj ho ne mein?"
And she was so hot, he thought. No matter how mischievous or playboy and plain stupid Prem and he had been, they had never flirted with the other's sibling. It was a pact written in their WE-ARE-SO-HOT creed: You may not flirt with your friend's sister.
"Nah nothing wrong with that hun. it's just my dad used to talk about the Bajaj company a lot. But yea it was nice meeting you Kasak. Need any help moving the lovely boy here?"
Dang it! He is leaving already. Kasak thought. She smiled. "Nah. He should have remembered that a woman gave birth to him and go hug his mama. Bye Kris."
She walked out the hallway and bumped into someone. She looked up and saw the man's eyes widen.
"Kasak? Tum?" Prem asked.
Smiling bitterly she said. "Actually its KB. Kasak Bajaj, CEO of KB Company. Your partner in crime for the last eight months."
