Sam had a bad feeling about what Rishab was going to do to Prem, no Ud, as soon as she hung up the phone. Whatever Prem, no Ud, must have done was probably bad because Rishab was not one that showed what he was feeling, but right on the phone, she had felt as if he was going to kill Ud or something as drastic.
As much as she might hate Ud for throwing out the Bajaj family out of their own family and company, he was Anu and Prerna's son. Aah, another connection in their ever so long history. Another weave in their unbreakable life basket.
The thought caused her to remember a comment that Rishab had once made to her. It was during the first months of their friendship and she had, oh so casually remarked, "Do you sometimes feel the life lines that connect Prerna and Anu?"
He had looked at her with once and looked away as if he were some place else. Then he had remarked, "Oh, I know what you mean. It is as if you were in a movie with the two starring, Basu and Prerna. You are the villain that keeps on trying to come between their love stories. It does not matter that you are not trying to be a villain, actually, no one thinks himself a villain, but still, with Prerna, when she was with me, I have always felt that she wanted to be with Anu." Rishab had casually made the remark as if he did not care, but for a few moments, in his eyes, she had seen pain and hurt before he had covered it.
Sometimes Sam had felt as if their friendship was the only way they could give themselves hope. No matter how depressed she felt about Anu's love over Prerna, Rishab had always been there for her. Like this one time, it had been maybe six months into their friendship, she had wanted to talk about the first "wedding night" when Anu had uttered Prerna's name. She had tried her hardest to forget it, but it was always there like a crouching monster ready to attack. Sam had figured that the only way to get over it was to talk. Not with Anu, lord she never wanted to talk about that with Anu, but maybe Rishab was the one.
They had been into their second cup of coffee in a restaurant, when she had finally blurted the thought that she had wanted to talk about during the lunch. "Anu uttered Prerna's name the our first night together after the wedding."
Rishab had been about to take a sip of the coffee, but he stopped as if he was not sure what she had just said. She repeated it again just to make sure that he had heard. He put down his cup and gathered her hands in his hand, as if for comfort.
"Aah, Sam. I don't know what to say, baby." Then he had moved his chair so that he was next to her and put his arms around her. The tears that she had not even known were there had started spilling. The whole time he had just held her and rocked her. After maybe fifteen minutes, when she was done with crying, he had handed her a handkerchief. Rishab had then told her something that she had never forgotten. "I know what you feel, Sam. What she thought of with me a responsibility, Prerna would have given to Anu without him asking. I can tell you nothing except that I lived through what little she had to give me because I could not live without her. It was better to have a little part of her with me than to have none at all. You have to make the choice whether you still want to stay with Basu." Then he has smiled as said, "I heard once that the wolf searches around for his mate, but when he finds her, he always returns to her."
That had given her hope to believe in her relationship with Anu. It had worked until now, but when he had left after Prerna without even asking, she had felt as if all her work had been in vain. Didn't he think that she cared or that she hurt? Prerna was her friend, but she had felt as she had invited the enemy over for dinner. She felt terrible of thinking that way about Prerna, but she was not nave enough to think that Anu just felt friendship for Prerna. She hoped that she had it in her to walk away from Anu when he got together with Prerna again. She had a degree in psychology so hopefully she could walk out with her heart intact, but for now she had to go to Ud's house incase Rishab did anything bad to the boy. With the thought, she took her keys and went out the door.
As Rishab got in his car to drive to Prem's house, he just remembered something important: he did not where his house was. He hated bugging Sam, but he was going to have to call her. But before he could, there was a call from the lady herself.
"Rishab," she said before he even managed hello. "I am coming with you, so you better drive over to the house and pick me up." Rishab smiled as he got the car into drive and went towards Sam. Sometimes she made his life so easy.
