Chapter 43
Mukti cracked opened her eyes slowly as the sun shone regally from the window facing her. She sighed quietly and rubbed her eyes, trying to wake herself up. Biting her cheek so as not to smile inanely, she remembered last night, and shivered pleasantly. Slowly she turned around to the other side of the bed, and was met with rumpled, empty sheets.
He was not there.
Mukti turned on her side again and closed her eyes. Oh God…not again, please…
She wasn't scared, and yet a jolt of something hot and heavy shot deep in her belly as she contemplated the idea that perhaps…possibly…no. No, he would not do that, she knew. Forcing herself to face her demons, she turned back to the other side again, sliding up to a seated position. She straightened out her mussed-up bed hair and pulled it back in a careless ponytail. She got out of bed and it was then that she saw him standing in the balcony, talking frantically on the phone. He had been up and ready for a few hours, it seemed. He was wearing his trademark jeans and wife-beater, with a grey hoodie. It was an effortless look, and she knew he hadn't paid much though to it, and yet he looked like he belonged on the cover of GQ. She smiled slightly then – because he looked so good, because he hadn't left her – and then left him to it. She picked up her favourite pair of cropped jeans, a striped white shirt and headed into the bathroom, where she showered quickly. Applying her makeup, she marvelled that her reflection in the mirror remained unchanged. His touch had not left its mark on her physical appearance, though she had known for a long time that he had touched her soul in more ways than one. She wondered if she really had changed as a person from the inside, even when she could not see the marks on the outside.
Recalling the events of the last night, she blushed at the memory of her – there was no other word for it – brazenness. She did not regret it, not one bit, but it still startled her to see how much Prem's influence had seeped into her. She chuckled at the very idea that, last night, the roles had been reversed. For the first time in his life – she could bet – Prem had not been in the driving seat. That gave her a sense of satisfaction, and she bit her lip as she smiled widely at herself.
Returning to the bedroom again, she saw that Prem was still on the phone, looking ever more agitated, and worry flitted across her forehead. She made her way out to the balcony, and even though he was on the phone and didn't notice her at first, she found herself suddenly shy, and avoided looking directly at him, focusing on the beautiful view around her. He jerked his head when he registered her presence, and a lazy smile settled on his face, his eyes softening and sparkling at her. She returned the smile, and turned to rest against the balcony railing, waiting for him to finish his conversation.
To his credit, Prem did try. He ran his hand through the ends of her hair and played softly with the strands, impatient with the caller at the other end. Rolling his eyes, he mouthed 'Sorry', and Mukti smiled, shaking her head slightly.
""Hey, hang….hang on a minute, will you?" he barked at the caller, when it became obvious that the call was not ending any time soon. Holding a hand over the speaker, he leaned in close to Mukti and kissed her softly on the forehead.
"Hey", he whispered.
"Hey yourself", she whispered back, shy again.
"Sorry about this – it's work", he explained, "Something terrifyingly urgent has come up, and I just can't seem to get Khanna to shut up!" he laughed, somewhat bitterly.
"Is everything okay?" Mukti asked, concerned. She thought she caught a glimpse of something – uncertainty? – in his eyes but it was gone in an instant, and he smiled and replied, "Yup, nothing that needs to be worried about. Tell you what, why don't you head downstairs and order yourself some breakfast, and I'll be down as soon as I can?"
Mukti opened her mouth to protest but found herself agreeing instead. Whatever Prem said, she could tell that something was bothering him, and he didn't want her to know. Instead of pushing the matter, she reached up and gave him a quick hug – surprising him – and then left him to it. As she exited the room, she glanced back at him. In profile, she could clearly see the tension on his face, and then it was slowly overcome by what she could only describe as absolute rage. Mukti had seen that look on him before, and had never liked it. This time, however, it wasn't directed at her.
Then what was it about?
---
Seating herself at a large table in the centre of the room, Mukti eagerly picked up her menu and glanced through it, struggling to decide her meal. She was soon joined by Rohan and Mia, who looked far too fresh and undisturbed for two people who'd gotten married the night before. Mukti smiled as she watched the two of them pore over a single menu, hands and legs entwined, giggling like two teenagers on a date. She stared at them for quite a while, eyebrows raised, until they looked up at her and literally jumped apart guiltily, again like two teenagers on a date, when caught by their mothers.
"What?" Rohan glared at her over the top of his menu. Mukti widened her eyes innocently. He continued, "We're married. I'm not ashamed". Mukti shrugged her shoulders and refused to comment, knowing that she would burst into a fit of giggles if she did. She turned back to her menu instead.
"So, what are you having, Mukti?" Mia changed the subject.
"Errrr…….." she pontificated.
"Unless they serve pani puri for breakfast here, I doubt Mukti will want anything!" came a voice from behind them. Without turning back, she rolled her eyes at the intruder's voice. Evidently, his mood had lifted.
Prem came and sat down next to Mukti, leaning his arm casually against the back of her chair. Smirking slightly, he turned to her and said, "So, do they serve pani puri here?"
She glared at him and ignored the question. Rohan looked between them, confused. "What's this about pani puri?"
Prem laughed a little, and whispered close to her, "Shall I tell them about that time I caught you at the roadside vendor?"
Mukti glared at him again, daring him. His eyes sparkled with a challenge, and he leaned back in his chair, stretching his legs out in front of him, brushing against Mukti's under the table.
"Again, I ask", Rohan interrupted their staring session with an amused shake of his head, "what's this about pani-puri?"
Prem broke contact with Mukti and turned to look at his friend. He smiled slightly and bowed his head, "Nothing. Mukti just happens to like pani puri. A lot".
She shrugged her shoulders blithely. "I like it. But I'm not having it for breakfast!" she reasoned, as Prem smiled widely.
He looked at her for a few heartbeats, and the hand that was resting on her chair moved closer as his fingers caressed the nape of her neck, brushing against her hair and sending chills across her spine. Mukti tried moving away discreetly, but his hold on her chair was firm.
"So," he said, without taking his eyes off her, "What is it that you'd like for breakfast?"
It was an innocuous question, but Mukti knew that he wasn't talking about food. He was teasing her, and she didn't know how to respond in front of Rohan and Mia, who were eyeing each other with interest.
"I….uh…."
Rohan coughed loudly, interrupting them and saving Mukti from a response. Somewhat guiltily, she jerked her head towards Rohan and Mia, who were now both wearing identical expressions of glee, the same expression that had been on Mukti's face a while ago. Now it was their turn to enjoy the obvious display going on in front of them. Mukti smiled nervously, and tried to look innocent. Prem, for his part, didn't look perturbed in the slightest.
"Something's going on here", declared Rohan triumphantly, giving his friend a suggestive smirk in the form of a question. Prem ignored it, and picked up his menu. Rohan wasn't one to let go, however, and later, when they were all walking down to the lobby, he took Prem aside.
"Okay, what was that about?"
"What was what about? Prem wasn't giving him an inch.
Rohan rolled his eyes, "Whatever, dude. Don't think I didn't catch that vibe between you two…did something happen after the party?"
"You seriously aren't asking me this!" Prem shook his head.
"What? I'm just being a good friend. Besides, I like her. Don't mess this one up!" Rohan warned Prem, only half-joking.
Prem gave him an incredulous look, "Wha -…this one? What does that mean?!"
"You know what it means", Rohan lowered his voice even more. Now he got serious. "Don't mess this up like – "
Prem raised a hand to stop his friend right there. "Don't, Ro. Let's not go there".
Rohan sighed, "Sorry, man. I know you're still sensitive about that…okay, okay, I won't mention it anymore! But seriously, don't let Mukti go. She's good for you, and from what I know about you, she's the only one who can handle you! Don't go breaking her heart, okay?"
Prem smiled at his friend, "Trust me, that is not going to be an issue. I wouldn't ever…I'm not going to hurt her".
Satisfied, Rohan nodded his head once and they continued on.
---
The porters loaded Prem's car with suitcases and closed the trunk. As the boys settled up at the hotel, Mia and Mukti took a walk across the courtyard.
Mia turned to Mukti and smiled, "You know, Mukti, I'm really glad you came to the wedding".
"I'm glad I did, too", returned Mukti, "It was a beautiful wedding. And Rohan is a very lucky guy!" she laughed.
Mia nodded and whispered wickedly, "That he is!" She continued, in a normal voice, "And the same goes for Prem. You know, I've known him a long time, almost as long as I've known Rohan, and I have to say…I don't ever think he's been this happy. And that's all down to you, Mukti. I never thought Prem was the kind of guy who'd be happy settling down; I always thought he was too restless for that. But now I realise – he was restless because he was waiting for you. You're the anchor in his life, the calm that he's been searching for forever. From the time that I've known him, Prem's been like a brother to me, even though it's Rohan who's his best friend. And I know that I've not always agreed with his decisions, but I've always wanted to see him happy. And now I'm glad he is".
"Thank you", was all Mukti managed to whisper, her eyes welling up.
Mia smiled and hugged her tightly. "And I also know one more thing. This weekend might have been about my wedding, but I'm glad that I got the opportunity to make such a wonderful friend out of it, too".
A tiny smile curved up on Mukti's face as she contemplated this girl, someone she hadn't even known two days ago, but who now seemed such an integral part of her life.
"Me too", she replied. "I'm glad we're friends too".
Breaking off the hug, they walked back to the entrance of the hotel, where the boys were impatiently drumming their fingers against the hood of the car. Mia sighed, and turned to Mukti, "Remember one thing, girlie. You wanna hold on to your man? Always keep him waiting – it drives them crazy!" she winked. They both burst into a fit of giggles as they approached the car. Prem and Rohan looked bemused. "What?" they said in unison. This set Mukti and Mia off even more, and it was a good ten minutes before the tears finally stopped rolling.
As they got into the car, Prem turned to Mukti and said, "Hey – why don't I go and drop these guys off to catch their flight out, and then I can come back and we'll go home together?"
Mukti looked at him, "Are you sure? I don't really mind coming along, in fact – "
"Yeah, I mean you could go shopping or something!"
"Shopping? In Panchmeshwar?" Mukti stared.
"What's wrong with Panchmeshwar?" he laughed.
"Nothing's wrong; it's just, I thought – "
"Don't worry about it, Mukti. The room's paid up for a couple more hours anyway, and you could just relax and watch TV or something if you don't want to go out. You'll be fine. I'll be back before you know it".
"O-okay" Mukti didn't argue any longer. There it was again, that shifty look in his eyes that she thought she had seen earlier that morning. For the second time that day he was brushing her off, not being rude about it, but still. He was definitely hiding something, and it stung slightly that he felt the need to do so. But she didn't know how to find out what was going on without getting him mad, and Rohan and Mia didn't need to witness that. So she simply smiled, waved goodbye at Rohan and Mia, and turned back to the hotel. As they drove off, Mukti wondered yet again what was bearing so heavily on Prem's mind, and why he couldn't seem to trust her with it. Bristling with annoyance, and a little uneasiness, she headed back up to her room, where she would stay until Prem returned.
Thanks everyone 😳
