Post the bitchy women of Kittie Party, producer Manish Goswami and writer Shobhaa De now offer Sarrkkar — Rishton Ki Ankahi Kahani, a family saga set against a political backdrop.
This daily premieres on Zee from April 25 at 8.30 pm. It replaces Piya Ka Ghar, which moves back to the afternoon slot.
Sarrkkar is about a chief minister and her relationship with her daughter, two sons and their wives.
The cast includes the formidable Divya Seth, Ronit and Rohit Roy, Tisca Chopra, Shveta Salve and Mouli Ganguly.
At the launch held at The Hilton yesterday, Ashwini Yardi, Zee's progamming head, described it as a new genre of television programming.
When asked if it was inspired by the Gandhi clan, De said it was a script close to her heart. "Fiction is heavily borrowed from real life and then people make assumptions," she says.
The show is about Priyamvada (Seth) who is drawn into power after her husband's assassination, only to get entangled in a web that has a telling effect on her relationships with her family.
She wants her two sons Kunal (Ronit Roy) and Karan (Rohit Roy) to stand by her through her political plans. But Kunal is more interested in academics while Karan is a man in a hurry.
Their sister, Kritikka (Mouli Ganguly), has problems of her own with the mother and blames her for everything that has gone wrong with the family.
This soap marks the return of Seth on the small screen as well as the first time pairing of the Roy brothers together on television.
With De emphasising that the soap will not ultimately turn into a saas-bahu saga, the political power play remains to be seen.
