Rightfully Mine
The weather had been cold for few days. It had rained cats and dogs last night. The road was muddy and puddles were formed everywhere. She was not bothered about it this time. Her mind was occupied with more stressful things.
She had butterflies in her stomach since the phone call she got last night.
Bani contemplated with the idea whether she should go or not. Aditya Bali had spoken to her last night over the phone to be present at the will reading. Bani crossed the road paying the driver and walked into the Walia group of industries. The security smiled at her and she retuned his smile feebly. She took careful steps towards the elevator to the 5th floor. Her heart burned her stomach burned and she did not know what was happing to her. The only thing she wanted to do was run back to her shop and hide there with her wonderful books. With trembling hands she pressed the elevator. The elevator door opened and she stared startled. She got in and pressed 5. Like an automaton she walked to the private room of Uday Walia. Her beloved uncle. She knocked and opened the door.
--------------------------------------------------------
Aditya smiled at her reassuringly. There were few people whom she had seen few times when she visited the office with her uncle. They looked at her. Bani took a back seat with heavy heart. She was sure she was going to here something bad. This heartburn always happened to her when there was some bad news waiting for her.
She had wondered hundred times why she had to be present for the will reading when she was no way related to her.
He had been her godfather.
He had looked after her, educated her, and helped to buy the book shop she always wanted to have one day. Her parents had left her a small property before their death in an accident. Her father trusted Uday Walia with Bani.
Her father Nishikanth Dixit was his friend. Since Uday Walias death two weeks ago Bani had been orphaned again. Though she had relatives from her parents' side all were busy with their own lives and backed out when Uday Walia came forward to take her responsibilities.
Bani was snapped out of her thoughts as she heard hushed murmur in the room. She saw him walk in with his held high. His face expression less. He was an attractive man with rugged feature. He took two long strides and took the front seat. Bani had seen him few times in Walia mansion. Every time he would come to meet Uday Walia the man would upset him and she would see her uncle sulk in his study room. She used to hate him for doing that to his own father. The last time she saw him was at his father's funeral. She had noticed him among the crowd. For the first time she saw the man's face lost its color. He had stared t his father's body with out taking his eyes of him. Then he had disappeared among the crowd.
For Bani Uday Walia was a gem of a person. She had cried her heart out when he passed away. A massive attack took his life.
Aditya was the one who had informed bout his death.
Aditya Bali was his personal adviser. He worked for Uday Walia. Fought all legal battles for his mentor Uday Walia and he was his confidant. Bani was lost in thoughts again. She was snapped out of her reverie as she heard a slow murmur again in the room. She looked about her and saw people staring at her. Bani moved her gaze towards Aditya he smiled sympathetically at her and continued…
'The couple should marry with in six months. To acquire the property left behind by Uday Walia. Both the parties do not have right to sell or give away the property. …..'
Whose name Bani thought? Who has to marry? She looked lost. She was so self occupied she was not aware the meeting was over.
Aditya opened the door for the trustees one by one left them leaving Bani Uday Walia's son and Aditya Bali in the room.
Aditya turned towards the man who was still seated. He looked angry and frustrated.
His jaw muscles tightened he gave Aditya a cold look. Aditya's attention turned to Bani who was seated behind him like a kitten. She was fidgeting with her bag which clearly showed her nervousness.
' Bani…' he called her softly and walked up to her.
Bani looked at him nervously. She had missed an important piece of information. And she knew that wasn't good.
'Uncle….I couldn't…..
Jai stared at the girl who looked nervously t Aditya
'Oh hello…' Bani looked over Aditya shoulder to the owner of the masculine voice.
'So you were here my bride?' he said through his clenched teeth.
Bani's mouth fell opened. 'Bride?
"jai please..' Aditya intervened.
The man ignored him completely. 'Aditya I need to talk to you… I don not agree with the will…'
Aditya took a deep sigh. This was difficult Jai was not any boy he can deal with, he wouldn't comply and the task is too difficult.
'And you…' Jai looked at her with venom in his eyes. 'You have proved yourself.' He stopped and continued 'Why these women never get off with their treachery'.
Bani's face blanched. She looked at Aditya.
'What is going on? And why am I being blamed?' she asked in her small voice
'Get off the drama of being an innocent girl these things work with Uday Walia not with Jai … You can fool people with your innocent face but not me…' he seethed.
'Please.. You are crossing the limit.." she said weakly. And turned her attention on Aditya.
'Uncle what is going on.. I am sorry I did not hear you before..' she said color creeping on her face.
'Tell her man.. Let her relish the feeling once again she had won a lottery. Tell her how she had tricked the old man to write a will like that?
Bani's eyes widened. She still had the burning sensation. This was bad she knew but she would like to get it over with. This was important…
'Bani….' Aditya caught her hand in his. He was sure by then she hadn't heard anything he spoke few minutes ago.
Jai gave a sarcastic laugh.
''Bani … Uday ji's will say…' he cleared his throat and continued. 'That you and Jai should marry.
'NO…' she screamed pushing his hand away.
Jai noticed her face. For a fraction of second he saw the disbelief and shock in her eyes. Women are good actresses he thought later and smirked.
'Bani.. I am sorry child I know how this feels. But you and Jai should marry to get his property. You guys will only be eligible then…'
But I don't want…'
'Oh please..' Jai laughed.
'Jai please..' Aditya warned him.
'Bani… if you guys do not marry the company will go to charity..'
She shook her head. "No this can't be….'
Jai looked bored. The drama before him was getting on to his nerves. He looked at them for a moment and said in bored tone.. "If the drama is over I had like to get back to my work.. Anything else I should know Mr. Bali?'
Aditya gave him a look. This man was impossible he knew Jai he was an impossible child.
'Uncle I had like to leave too..' Bani said in her small voice..'
Aditya nodded.
'That's fine come on I'll drop you..' Jai said looking directly at Bani.'
'No… I mean thanks.. I'll go..' she declined his offer. It would kill her to be in car with him. This was not she had planned for her. He was not the man for her. She doesn't like him. She had decided that.
Jai smiled. "Ms. Dixit.. I would like to get to know my bride.. So ..'
Jai please…' Aditya turned to him.
Jai chuckled sarcastically. "Bali my dear.. I had like to get to know her..' he looked at Bani . "Shall we?'
Aditya squeezed her hand. 'Yes dear go with him he will drop you.. And Jai behave yourself..' he warned looking at him.
Jai smirked. He walked towards the door and opened the door for her. Bani hesitantly followed him.
Jai walked briskly to the parking lot and opened his car door. Bani got into the car her heart in her mouth. She did not like anything that was happening with her. And more over she did not like the son of Uday Walia.
Their drive was in silence. Bani caught her breath. Jai was pre occupied with his own thoughts. The car stopped near the signal breaking his thoughts he looked at her and asked menacingly. "How did you manage to make him write a will like that?'
Bani was quiet for a moment then she spoke. "I have no idea what you are talking about.'
'Please woman cut the innocent act. I don't need a microscope to find another cunning b**..'
'Mind your language Mr.' she raised her voice. I am telling you again and again. I have nothing to do with the will. I don't want your father's property. It's all yours leave me out of it…'
Jai smirked again. She is smart. She knows how to play the game and she very well knows saying this wouldn't change the will. They have to tie the knot or else it would go to charity. Why would he want his fathers sweat and blood go to some unknown people?
Why the hell his father choose her as his wife. Who is this girl? Why does his father want to trap him with this woman? Jai had hundreds of questions and he decided to find them out.
Bani told him the place she wanted to get down. He stopped the car and said, "I have not finished. I want answers..'
Bani ignored him and shut the door. She leaned towards the window and said. "I don't have anything to talk to you about. Get me out of this mess…' she straightened her and walked to the shop at the side of the road.
Jai stared after her.
