What are your views on the dowry system in the Indian Subcontinent?

I think when it was started the thought behind it was good. Parents helping their children to get a start on their life. Now the system is abused to sometimes fatal consequences. It has a lot of side effects like parents not wanting girl child in fear of having to provide dowry later in life. I think as the system stands today it has retained none of the spirit of how it came about and is one of the biggest marks against our culture today.
