Part 3 (Parts 1 & 2 on page 1)
She knew the answer, it was because she loved him and loved him she did……..with her heart, body and soul…………in a strange way Bani was glad dadi refused to accept Jai's marriage proposal because if she couldn't be his………….she certainly did not want to belong to anyone else. As she closed her eyes and hugged herself tightly her thoughts voraciously raced to the time when she first met him………three months but it seemed like yesterday, when the suave & enigmatic Jai Walia whirl-wind his way into her life.

Flash Back – Bani's Lineage

Her dada Thakur Viren Kumar Dixit was a simple man, no false pride, he treated everyone he met with due respect. Status never meant much to him. He was deeply religious and had he loved his family……..Bani was his favourite, he often told her she had a smile that was even the envy of the Gods. His fore-fathers were early settlers in the now famous tourist resort of Khandala. He was the eldest of two children, his sister Vijaya, two years his junior was married to and well settled in New Dehli. She too, like her brother was an amiable lady but forthright especially when she felt injustice being done. Bani admired her exceedingly and was sometimes struck in awe of her diplomacy when tackling dadi. She visited about 4 or 5 times a year and more frequently after her Bhaiya had taken ill and sadly after his passing she was much to heartbroken and her visits became less frequent.

Bani's home, Hari Bhavan was one of the first establishments in Khandala and her family were devout Vaishnavs. It was a home of much interest and though it was almost 100 years old, it was immaculately maintained. The lush green landscaped gardens infront of the house was edged with white and yellow roses leading up to the entrance. The deep-rooted ancient weeping willow which stood on the far north end of the garden, with its outstretched drooping branches, provided a perfect hideout for "quiet time" as Rano called it.
The white washed country haveli stood on an enormous stretch of land on a plateau midway of the evergreen Sahyadris slopes and extended towards one of the natural hot springs on their land which eventually merged itself with the crystal clear waterfall gushing on the eastern adjacent slope. It was, in many ways secluded from the otherwise busy hill-station and thankfully due to her fore-fathers who were keen nature lovers, preserved much of the natural greenery not only on their land but also the pathways surrounding their estate.
Her father, Manoj Dixit was a doctor by profession but midway in his career, he decided to venture into Ayurvedic treatment. His father, had always instilled in his son the power of natural healing and service to mankind. Dadaji, although he came from a family of Zamindars, had a passion for the science of natural medicine and he himself was an ayurvedic specialist, though by no means in a formal sense, yet his expansive knowledge of healing roots and herbs, could outwit some of the best in the field. When Bani had completed her schooling, it came as no surprise when she too, decided on becoming an ayurvedic doctor. She enrolled at the B.V College of Ayurveda purely as a means for formalizing her degree, her practical knowledge was exceptionally good as her lecturers observed. Apart from the natural passion she displayed, she, from a tender age observed her dadaji make various concoctions and when she was old enough she often accompanied him to the vast natural forests in search of specific herbs. This enabled her to excel in her chosen field and when she graduated she joined her bauji in his practice.

Dadaji's favourite wish was to establish an ayurvedic clinic on their estate, ofcourse much to the dismay of dadi, she felt it is was "being common", after all they had the image of Zamindars to maintain.

Her husband however was adamant and so on the extreme end nearly two kilometers from the main house, the ideal spot was chosen, near the natural spring, thakur Viren Dixit established a clinic with three individual self catering living quarters for patients and their immediate families. The atmosphere was pregnant with clean, fresh air, serene surrounding and breath-taking views which was conducive to healing. After her dada had passed on, her father Manoj, ran the clinic single-handedly until recently, Bani was now his assistant. The clinic……..named after her dadaji…….the "Viren Kumar Ayurvedic Vishwashanti Dham" was a flourishing famous practice, which attracted high profile foreigners and affluent Indian families from India, yet the clinic remained unpretentious and treated all patients equally irrespective of status……….that had been her dadaji's goal in life and it was a tradition that Manoj and his brilliant & humble daughter maintained. The father – daughter team made an excellent pair and with the exception of residents of Khandala and previous patients, people where dumbstruck when Manoj introduced Bani………as his assistant and daughter, for at such a young age she was extremely talented and it seemed as if she possessed natural healing powers…………

Your comments are always appreciated, should I continue

Dear Readers,

Sorry for the very delayed update, I had a truly bad two week period, as some of you know lost my pet poodle and its being so difficult. She has been with my family for 17 years…………more than my life and it is difficult come to turns with it.

I also have exams, that's stressing me out. Please be patient and bear with me. I may not update as I have exams in a week's time and it will last for a month. Please forgive if I don't update regularly.

Thanks for understanding and the support.

Jaan.

The characters here are different and so is my Jai Walia. I started off, with one idea in my mind…………….but as I write new things come to me………….hence the story line may take a detour but it will settle with the two star- crossed soulmates.

Hope you like it and comments are always welcome.

Flash Back: Our Hero Jai Walia

The name Jai Walia, synonymous with success, grandeur, business icon, not to mention sauve, deadly sex-appeal and surprising young. What top business men took a life time to achieve, the Jai Walia accomplished in a few years after taking over from his father. His father Rajiv Walia was a wealthy business man no doubt, amongst some of the top socialites in Mumbai. He had left his home town of Punjab as a young matriculant and come to the "City where Dreams came true" to find his fortune. At the time, he did not possess tertiary education, but he was knowledgeable and read voraciously. He secured an admin post in one of the top hotels in Mumbai. He was a loyal and dedicated worker, which of course did not go unnoticed amongst his seniors and as time when by he climbed his way up the corporate ladder, in the process educating himself in the hotel industry. In due course, he met and married Krisna Mathur, a brilliant, ambitious girl yet remarkably humble from an uppermiddle-class family in Mumbai. She had an elder sister, Durga, who was married and settled in Jaipur.

Soon after their first child was born, a chubby baby boy, Jai, his father had received one the biggest break in life, he was able to buy-out one of the hotels, his company was planning to get auction and remove from its chain completely. It was as if Jai and bestowed luck upon his dad. He mother always referred to Jai as her miracle son………..her little Krishna…………..for Jai as a child was not only mischievous in his younger years but extremely brilliant.

It did not take long for the Walia group of industries to become one of the leading hotel chains in India. Rajiv worked hard, but he never forget his difficult moments and that kept him humane. He showered his son with much love and affection and sent him abroad to study business science at the Harvard College, of-course to the dismay of his wife.

"There are excellent business schools in India", she grumbled bitterly, "does he really have to go abroad", she said choking back her tears. Jai & his dad coaxed her lovingly and after Jai had promised to speak to her at least once a day and come home on every vacation, she relented. Deep within her heart though she was proud of her son…………..she wanted only the best for him.

Jai, she noticed was unlike his peers, he had matured way beyond is years, He read voraciously, just like his father, always deep in thought and reserved. His voice had depth and character, he was not loud nor boisterous, though he did have naughty, cheeky sense of humor she noticed, though not very often displayed. One thing for certain, he had a deep sense of pride being Indian. Culture and religion was integral to him. Perhaps the right woman will open him up she often said to herself. He was not the jovial, happy-to-lucky type, unlike his best friend Ranveer……..or Veer as he was known. Veer, 5 years senior to Jai, was the son of Vijay Khanna, one of the directors of Walia Industries. He was an extremely dedicated and loyal friend to Rajiv. Vijay lost his wife, Meera, during Veer's teen years, Jai's mom played a vital role in raising Veer, together with his nani, Kaushalya. After the loss of his wife, Vijay immersed himself into his work……………but also alcohol in the process destroying his health. Rajiv tried to sending him for AA counseling………….but Vijay had given up the will to live. He and Meera were childhood sweethearts, he couldn't bear her loss. Soon after Veer's marriage to Vidya, a simple rural village girl from his nani's locality, he passed on.

His nani who then insisted on the proposal and keen to settle Veer…………….before he fell for one of the "shehari chori's" she complained to Krisna. Nani knew her grandson…………..he was no angel………….she saw the girls who visited him and was not impressed.

Vidya was sensible, cultured girl who would make a home for Veer she said…………of course Veer was not impressed, not only did he have to contend with Jai's constant sniggling and smirking, he……….HE…………marry a village girl…………….he imagined colorful mirrored lenghas, overly made-up faces and bhoj-puri accent. Does she know how to read, oh dear God, what if she cannot read he complained. How would she react on their first night………..what if she does want me to touch her and starts to scream……………yaar Jai, "mera kismet toh pooti" he panicked. Jai was not helping by adding that if all else fails at least he will have fresh farm milk, makan, his favourite dahi from the numerous goats and cows from "Vidya Bhabhi's" back yard as Jai & his parents, Veer, his dad & nani made their way to her village for fixing the rishta. Although it was rural village, the strangers were immediately struck by its beautiful surroundings. Yes………….it did not have the luxuries of Mumbai, but it had serenity………………a calmness to match the faces of the villagers, they noticed schools, a library even, the village market where villagers traded their farm produce.

They noticed the village bhania, the only shrewish face thus seen, haggling for the best prices from the farmers.

As they reached the house, a typical farm house, white picket fence. Much to Veer's surprise, he did not see goats and cows wandering all over, nor was there the smell of cow dung, in-fact a delicious aroma filled the air.

They were greeted by the village mookiya (chief) and his wife, and a few other the village elders. Jai could sense Veer's nervousness and tried to quiten him.

The house was old, but very neat and tidy…………..uncluttered, a few good ornaments and simple dcor.

Vidya was the only child of the mookiya-ji who seemed to be a pleasant looking man, his wife a plump shy lady, dressed in a bright red & green sari, maang filled proudly with sindoor and simple ornaments. She spoke in soft tones to the women folk, glanced once at Ranveer, smiled and disappeared into the kitchen or so it seemed.

Refreshments were ordered to the large group, Veer glanced over waiting in trepidation for the sight of the girl who was chosen for him. As two of the servants brought in plates of savouries, the lady of the house walked in carrying a sliver plate heaped with besan ladoo, behind her was a silhouette figure walking gingerly towards the gathering, the payals on her feet tinkling with each movement. The lady step aside as if to unveil a shieled beauty. The mookiya rose to introduce his daughter Vidya. All gaze turned to the young girl, her doe eyes fixed on the floor, head covered with her pink duppata, her simple cotton embroaded salwar kameez framing her petite figure, she looked like a newly blossomed rose bud. The expressive smiles bode well, as she walked forward to take the blessings of nani, and other elder folk. Veer who was feasting his greedy eyes on her did not hear her father as he sought to introduce his daughter to him. As Jai nudged him hard to awaken him from his reverie, Veer short a hard glance at Jai and turning to Vidya who by now was blushing furiously and a shy smile played on her delicate lips. The gathering moved away to the courtyard to allow the couple to chat…………..Jai stayed on…………but kept aloof……….turning over some books and inspecting the ornaments on display.

As she offered Veer more chai, Jai noticed, her voice was soft and sweet, he was impressed by her and no doubt she would be the ideal wife to Veer but even better a babhi to him he smiled.

Veer was mesmerized by her, she was medium toned, had deep dark doe shaped eyes, soft, long dark hair which was braided neatly. Much to Veer & Jai's surprise, she was a teacher by profession. Veer chatted nervously, she chirped in occasionally but mostly she nodded in agreement and smiled shyly.

The gathering returned, Vidya rose to leave and Veer standing by his father smiled and nodded in agreement. The rishta was fixed and congratulations flowed as the besan ladoo was greedy gobbled up by the party.

The wedding was fixed quickly due to Vijay's failing health and six months later he passed on. Veer felt it acutely, but luckily Vidya was there each step of the way. Jai lent strong support to Veer and as time passed the pain become more bearable and Veer's good natured disposition returned.

Life and happiness returned to the Walia mansion the day Jai was made managing director of Walia Industries, it was a mammoth task for the 30 year old, but he had good grounding and learnt the from the best…………his dad. Life couldn't get any better, the only thing that his parents now wished for was to see him happily settled. Veer, Vidya and nani practically lived at the Walia residence, the bond between the families was such that Rajiv & Kisna knew that should anything befall them, Veer and Vidya will always be with Jai, they were really his brother and babhi. Bhabhi as Jai called her, loved and admired her, she was a true delight to be with and she in turn treated Jai like the brother she never had. She had simply pure devotion within her and even having the best of attire, she chose simplicity and elegance over heavy gaudy attire.

"Yeh babhi aur devar mera jivan muskhil kar de" Veer would complain in jest whenever Jai & Vidya ganged up on him………….. Veer was glad at the bond between Jai & Vidya, beside he knew that Vidya would made it up to him when they were alone. He was in 7th heaven when he realized that though extremely shy at first, she was comfortable with him, when he kissed her, she responded with just as much intensity as he did. Though he had been with other women, making love to Vidya was different, he couldn't explain it, it was as if two souls merged into one, it was perfect bliss being with her, touching her, being engulfed in her scent.

Jai was not keen to marry………well not yet, he was introduced to a few girls from, daughters of wealthy industrialist, but they were not to his liking, he found them too superficial and all hankering after money and position. His parents constantly pushed him to meet with prospective alliances. The last encounter left a bad taste in his mouth, her name was Roshni Chopra, daughter of a wealthy steel industrialist whose business expanded to the UK & SA. She was arrogant, obnoxious and was of the opinion that she was doing Jai a favour by allowing him to be acquainted with her. The last straw was when she called un-announced his home whilst the family were seated for lunch. She not only invited herself to lunch, but chose to criticize Vidya on her village, them being middle-class & her attire. Jai's face darkened with anger and as Vidya left to arrange more servings Roshni quipped "Ranveer, yeh gai thumne kaha se oothaiya" That did it, Jai yanked her from her seat and shoved her towards the exit. In a thundering voice, grinding his teeth he told her to get out of his house, never to come back. As she turned to leave, too stunned to re-act Jai called back "Roshni, cheap, filthy women like yourself can be bought at the drop of a hat, but a woman like Vidya babhi is what the true essence of a woman is. They give beauty to life, rhythm to music and a home to a man, something you would never know nor understand.

Vidya was speechless, she

The family was shocked, never had they seen Jai like this, Veer knew something was troubling Jai………….but what.

After lunch, Jai went into his study; Veer followed shortly, knocked on the door, then entered.

"Jai, kya baath hai, kuch dino se me dekh raha hoo ki kuch na kuch thume zaroor kaa jata hai, kya parishani hai" Aur Roshni ke saath yeh thume aacha nahi………..his voice trailed off as he saw a hardened expression on his face.

Roshni got of lightly he said, clenching is jaw, I could have done a lot worse.

"Veer ………..I'm tired of pretending to enjoy meeting these women, I do it to please mom and dad, but this is not the wife I want. Look……………I am not saying that all these woman are bad, some of them are nice, they just not my type."

"What is your type then Jai"……………he heard his father ask, Jai and Veer turned round in surprise.

Uhmm dad……..er……..I………….er, Rajiv interrupted him…………"dekho beta………….this is your life and all we want is for you to be happy, if you have someone in mind tell us"……..there's no-one Jai interrupted hastily, what I want to say is that the girl I marry must able to follow our traditions.

"Dad………..think about it, if you have come so far in life…………it's because you had mom by your side, a true partner, your other half. Do any of these socialite women match up to that, I hardly think so………..most of them want instant gratification, wealth and grandeur……….yes……….I can afford that but as your son, it is my duty to take our chain of hotels to international heights, it will require hard work, patience and dedication. I might falter in my steps, face many obstacles but this is where I need……….I want the strength of my wife. All the women I have met asked me just one question, what will I give them……………..no-one has yet asked me what they can give me.

I want someone whom will share my life and help me achieve my dreams, one who will walk beside for all the days of my life, someone who will make my house a home.

I want a wife who will help me carry your and maa's legacy………….give me time and don't compel me into marriage, I know who I want………….I just haven't found her as yet."

Krisna who was standing outside the door, felt her heart swell with pride, eyes brimming with tears……..she did not fail as a mother, her instinct told her to run in and hug him.

Rajiv's eyes turned moist, the lump in his throat made it difficult for him to speak…………..he silently hugged his son and from then on those who sought the distinguished bachelor were politely but firmly turned downed. Their son was a grown man, he knew what he wanted, they will leave it for him to decide.

Rajiv was preparing to step down as CE of Walia Industries to make way for Jai, he knew his son was capable of doing a good job, maybe in-fact better than him, he thought. At the same time he needed a break, Krisna's aches and pains were on the rise and not being one for modern medicine, she believe in the power of nature and natural healing. There were plenty of resorts to choose from but, there was one in particular the Viren Kumar Ayurvedic Vishwashanti Dham in Khandala, not only was it a well-known centre of international acclaim, the young assistant they were told was an exceptional practioner, hence Rajiv & Krisna were keen to meet him. (They assume it is a young male doctor).

They had pestered Jai to join them as he was alone, nani has gone of to her village for a month, Veer & Vidya, have finally agreed to go on honeymoon, with Vijay's passing away, there was so much to do, hence they decided to postponed their trip to Scotland, now they were gone off. It was summer there and the weather would be gorgeous, and lots of sight-seeing to do Vidya exclaimed. The only sight-seeing I want to do is my wife said Veer as he slipped his hand around her waist.

"Maa, you and dad need a break and this seems like the perfect place, its not to far and once I finish this business deal I will join you, I promise" Jai told his mother as they were preparing to leave. They planned on going for two weeks, Jai promised to join them later on which made Krisna's mood much lighter.

Rajiv & Krisna Walia drove through the huge gates leading to the expansive country haveli "Hari Bhavan", its well established and immaculated gardens, sparked an interest to acquaint themselves with the family. All they knew thus far was that the clinic was run by the owner of the resort Dr Manoj Dixit and his "famous" assistant. Hari Bhavan was their ancestral home and he together with his family lived here.

Rajiv Walia made the necessary arrangement for him and his wife to live with Dixits on their property, since the clinic was fully booked. Dadi was not happy at all even though there were sufficient rooms to spare, in-fact five rooms were not in use at all. He tried to reason with his mother that this couple needed treatment as the wife was not well. His mother's pompousness and selfishness amazed him sometimes, he could not understand how his father tolerated her attitude.

Manoj had heard about the famous Walia's and although he was not in the habit of mentioning & discussing his patients to the family, he felt that perhaps this one time, just for the benefit of patient and her husband, he would mention the name "Walia Group of Industries" as the family sat down to dinner the previous night. Bani knew what her dad was up and coaxed him further, "Bauji you mean the "Walia Group of Industries ka mallik kal humara clinic mei aa raha hai"

Haa beta, Rajiv aur unki patni Krisna, yaha aa rahi hai, ooski patni bimaar hai aur yaha illaj ke liye aayenge"

Di………..yeh Rajiv Walia, bahouth paise wale hai naa? Quipped Rano………….haa Rano…………Rajiv Walia owns a distinguished chain of hotels and there has been news that they are finalizing an international acquisition. They are one of India's top most families, in-fact Rajiv is a self made multi-millionaire. Dadi listened with keen interest but said nothing.

After dinner was over she requested on the servants to air out the second last room, next to Bani's. It was a beautiful room, well decorated with antiques, in the later years he husband had the room re-furbished with marble flooring and adjoining bathroom was immaculately done with marble basins and tubs, antiques taps & lighting. It was the only room in the haveli that had direct access to the roof terrace. It was spectacular views of the slopes and the waterfall. Yet despite such beauty the room was under lock and key, no-one was to use it as per Dadi's request. Manoj often said that his mother never knew his father, if she did, she would strive to make his dreams a reality and through that enrich his memory. Even at this old age she though only of fame and prestige and still steeped herself unpractical, orthodox beliefs.

On the morning of the expected arrival, she informed the family that Rajiv and his wife will be staying with them and she had prepared the room. Manoj acted surprised and thanked his mother, obviously to give her a sense of self importance, but he knew the moment she heard of the fame and prestige of Rajiv Walia, she had changed her mind……….
