The taxi stopped in front of an ancient building. The woman in her sixties stepped out straightening her dress. She looked at the ancient building and sighed. The building had a rugged look, time has worn down the orphanage. But still it looked huge. Her gaze fixed on the name. St. Bishop's convent. Taking a long breath she walked into the building.
Fifteen minutes later she was seated in one of the chairs in Mother Philomena's office. She sat down screening the room. The door opened and Mother Philomena entered with a sixteen year old girl. The girl was dressed in a brown colour skirt and a beige top. She looked hesitantly at the probing eyes of the older woman.. her face showed displeasure.
Bani Dixit was officially introduced to her aunt Shakuntala Dixit by Mother Philomena.
Shakuntala Dixit studied her niece's face. She did not like what she saw. The girl had an unruly curly hair A stubborn chin and a round face. Her eyes were expressive. Bani frowned at the older woman's scrutiny.
After Bani felt like an eternity the older woman ordered.
'Child get your things and be ready in five minutes'.
The girl showed her displeasure nodded at the mother and left the room.
Shakuntala Dixit turned her attention from the door and looked at Mother Philomena.
'God bless you Ms. Dixit for your grace. Bani will have a proper family from now on.' Mother Philomena quoted.
'Yes.. yes mother. The older woman waved her hand. 'I wouldn't have come here in the first place if she weren't my brother's only child. God bless his soul. She got up from the chair with difficulty and walked to the door. 'I presume my niece is a well behaved child mother… I do not want any kind of strain in this time of my life.' She closed the door with out waiting for mother's reply.
Mother Philomena grinned at the closed door.
The aunt and her niece took months to adjust to each others life style.
A day never passed with out their verbal fight.
Shakuntla Dixit finally fell in love with her niece in spite of her inhibitions.
Bani brought love and light to the older woman's life.
Bani loved her neighbors and taught her aunt to love them with out inhibitions.
The neighbors loved her fiery nature. They loved everything about her.
BAni made her aunt participate in every social activity. They were amazed to find the brooding woman once they used to call change into a fine jovial one.
Bani's happiness was short lived. She was once again orphaned at the death of her aunt.
Shakuntala Dixit left her a two bedroom flat and few thousands in the bank
Bani's neighbor Seema Sahay and her husband brought her back to life after the death of her aunt. They loved her like a daughter they never had. Their son Raghav few years her junior became her favorite buddy.
Four years later
The alarm went off with a screeching sound waking the day lights out of Bani's neighbors.
Bani opened her eyes and looked at the clock. Good Lord…..' she screamed, throwing the quilt away. She snatched the clock and stopped the alarm. The damn clock had cheated her again. The alarm sounded after half an hour. She glared at the antique clock which rested on her night stand and walked to the washroom. The next few minutes of her went running down the stairs and locking doors.
Mrs.Sahay looked heaven wards at the commotion coming from the next flat. She turned her attention to her husband and said, ' Yash… I'd do anything to get rid of her clock and her Juicer. Things like that should be barred from the society.
Yashwant Sahay chuckled.
'This Christmas I am going to present her a new clock.' She sighed.
'And you think she will replace her old one with it?' Mr.Sahay asked. 'Then you are out of your mind dear.. She enjoys irritating her neighbors.' He concluded fondly.
'You mean she enjoys irritating her neighbors?'
"If you say so then Yes…' he put the paper down he was reading and got up to refill his coffee . 'By the ways where is she going this time?'
'Some hospital she told me for a secretarial job something.'
The door bell rang and Mr. Sahay looked at his wife. She walked to the door and opened.
Bani stood breathless at the door.
'Mrs Sahay I am off to the interview wish me luck' she said.
"All the best Bani.. You are late as usual run along and come with a good news.'
Thank you' she beamed.
'By the ways are you sure you will get the job this time?.. bring something sweet even if you don't get them. We will celebrate silver jubilee. This you 25th interview right?' Seema Sahay always loved to pull her leg.
The girl who stood like a morning mist flared. 'you mean ..mean woman you just wait here at the door till I come back…' she shook her shoulder turned her back and left.
Mrs.Shay closed the door with a smile.
Bani walked swiftly to the bus stop. The bus had gone with out her. She was fifteen minutes late. She dug her hand in her hand bag for money there was no enough money to get a cab. Getting a lift was easier as well as dangerous she knew. But there was no choice. She had to do something and that something should be fast. Few cars passed by not bothering to stop. Suddenly an idea flashed into her mind. She congratulated her and limped a little scanning the street for a vehicle. Her gaze fell on a man who was sitting on the bench; he looked thoughtfully at her and returned his attention to the paper he was reading. She saw a vehicle in the distance she lipmed a head and stood at the centre of the road waving her hand
the car screeched to a halt..... A man stuck his head out sliding the windows.
'Madam what in Gods name are you doing? I could have crushed you to death....' he thundered in his deep masculine voice.
He looked at her for a moment and his gaze softened. 'What happened? Are you hurt?'
Bani was breathless. This was hard she thought looking into his eyes and lie.
'Listen girl are you hurt?' He was annoyed at her silence.
'I er.. got hurt... can you give me a lift to the hospital?' she asked hesitantly.
He looked at his watch for a moment and said. 'Hop in.'
He opened the door for her. He saw her limp and asked. "What happened?'
'I fell from the stair... I.... ouch! she pressed her hand on her knee.
He started the engine.."I am a doctor I can take a look at your leg if you let me..'
Bani panicked.
NO..... er i mean no.. I want to go to a proper hospital... I don't trust doctors i meet on the road...' she said looking at him and not believing what she was saying.
Oh really! Then how come you are sitting in my car young lady?' he scowled.
BAni.. think something fast.. she raked her brain.
'I said about doctors and for your information i don't get into any strangers car either... I couldn't find any cab and I was hurt. I didn't think well before getting into your car sir I am sorry..' she said sounding hurt and stealing a look at him.
'Okay... okay..." he was in no mood for a verbal war with a child. She has already wasted his time. He had a very rough night he needs to get to the hospital fast and here he was stuck in an unwanted situation.
He saw her press her knee again.
'There's a small clinic around the corner I'll drop you there...'
'No.. er....no can u please drop me to Mcholy hospital.
Mcholy hospital ? he thought.
'This could be an harmless sprain..' he said throwing her a gaze.
'My friend is at Mcholy hospital he can take care of me thank you.'
He didn't find that convincing he thought against saying anything.
Bani looked at her watch and sighed. "Can you please drive little faster?'
He controlled his impatience. A young lady sitting next to him was giving him orders. He hated everything that was happening with him from the morning. He had to take a shower from the guest room because his shower broke. His cook hard boiled his eggs for breakfast. And here he was trapped with this situation. He hated everything about this intruder. Except one thing, her hair. She had an axtra ordinary curly hair. She had pinned into a pony tail.
'STOP.. Stop.. She shouted at the sight of the hospital. He stopped the car and she got out hurriedly thanking him and forgetting to limp.
He couldn't believe what happened before his very eyes
'Hey!.. He was duped by a mere girl. For a second he thought of going after her and strangling her. He then changed his mind threw his car key to the valet and walked briskly to the hospital.
Bani was on the eighth floor when the last candidate got out of Ms. Braganza office.
Rita Braganza was a woman in her early fiftees. She was a short woman.
She threw a glance at Bani and then back to the woman. 'I'll let you know Miss. The woman threw a look at Bani's direction and left nodding at Ms Braganza.
'I am sorry for being late Ms..' Bani started.
'Cut the excuse and let me see what you can do..' said the woman walking towards her desk.
"let me see your speed at the typewriter Miss' she shoved a paper in her hand. The woman gave her an article and stood aside.
'Your time begins now…'
In less than five minutes Bani stood in front of Ms Braganza with the typed article in hand.
The womans face curved into a smile. 'You are incredible.'
'Thank you..' Bani thanked Mother Philomena… if it wasn't her……. Her thoughts were interrupted …
'When can you start Miss?'
'Now….'
Smiled the woman instantly liking the girl in front of her.
'What's you name?'
'I am Bani Dixit.'
'MsDixit you can start the job now.. I'll show you the rops and you are what my boss needs. He wants a…… well.' Ms Braganza swallowed the rest. He wants a machine like himself. She thought.
Rita Braganza told her what to do and how to do the only difference was she had to save the files in the computer. Bani did not understand most of the medical terms. Ms Braganza gave her a medical dictionary for reference.
Bani was at her work with the prescription. She couldn't understand what was written. She couldn't make out the alphabets. And the writing was a mess.
She looked at the hand written prescription and sighed.
'What in the world is this? a spiders crawl on spilled ink would look better than this.' She grimaced loudly.
'I am sorry for my hand writing miss but I can't help it.' Said the masculine voice from the door.
Bani was startled. Her mouth fell open at the sight of the man who walked into the room and stared down at her.
He looked at her startled face and his eyes flashed open.
'YOU???'
