Chapter 2 "I'll give you TWO days of time to decide." "…TWO days…" Jai's words keep echoing in her head.
Her thoughts, her days, and nights were occupied by him. She couldn't concentrate on anything else. All she could think about was Jai and his proposal.
That day, after Jai's departure, Bani just broke down, but not because of pain but rather with confusion and dilemma. Jai's last words had sent her into hasty panic. She was confused as to how to keep Jai happy. She was feeling very insecure about herself. To her, his happiness matters the most. His every words and every part of his life was important to her. Ever since she met Jai, she has always cared fro him. She never, even expressed her feelings to him, she never had to either. She knew him too well to know his next moves. She would realize his motives and feelings even before he did himself.
Some people might say that she could read him like a book but it was more than that, if there is such a thing. When you read a book, you're expected to forget the specific details that are not important. But she reads him as such a person that all the necessary and non-necessary details made a special place in her heart. It was like she was him.
Before she could realize her own feelings and thoughts, she'll realize his. But this proposal was something far from what she was expecting. Everything was happening so fast and she was stuck in a dilemma. To Bani the image of Jai Walia was more important than her own happiness. She wasn't sure if he will accept her the way she was because he was what he was. Bani has seen his constant mood swings and knowing only she can control him, she still wasn't sure. She trusted him and he trusted her but that wasn't enough to keep this relationship going. He was so experienced and she was so inexperienced compared to him. Her everyday life started with him and ended with him.
She still remembers the first time she met him in Italy. They were both there for business, but they had a vacation of their own. She remembers running into him after her long and tiring day and then her constant meetings with him the days followed.
Bani's flashback: It was the time of spring in May and in Venice, Italy made the best day for Bani. Even after long hectic meeting, Bani loved this time of the year. Spring meant a beginning of new life and meeting new people to Bani. It was the time of the year where new meetings and new relationships took place.
After her long meeting, Bani decided to explore the beautiful city. She heard a lot about Venice and was intrigued to explore it first hand. The historic yet beautiful buildings caught Bani's eyes. She greeted everyone and anyone, in spite of her poor Italian. Most of the time, she gave a slight nod and a sweet smile to the people walking by. She found it quite and peaceful this time of the day compared to the usual hustle and bustle during the mornings. She found the city to be quite acquisitive contrary to Mumbai back in India.
She walked along the Grand Canal and headed towards the Rialto Bridge to enjoy the view. As she stands on the Bridge checking out the scenery before her, her eyes fall on a young couple enjoying their gondola ride. She watches the scene with jealousy yet at the same time happily. The couple is smiling at and joking with each other. They are talking sweet nothings to each other and stealing sweet kisses with each other. Bani observe this from the bridge and smiles to her self. She imagines herself in that girl's place. She thinks about her future and her Prince Charming, looking at the scene unfolds before her. She chuckles sweetly at the mere thought of her Prince Charming.
As much as she likes to stand there the whole night, she knew she had to head back so she decides to explore the place a little more before heading back to her hotel room. Just thinking about that caused a frown to appear on her face and she sighs at the thought of getting back to her work.
Lazily she turns around and starts walking again oblivious to where she's going. And without any warning she bumps into someone so hard that the drink, the other person was holding, spills on her. Bani jumps back but too late to save her expensive and new dress.
*Gasp* "Oh no!! maine kal hi toh yeh kharida tha…aur ab is manhoos ne mere sarre kapde kharab kar diye. In Italians ko toh kabhi dikhta hi nahi hai," Bani mutters under her breath angrily. Bani continues thinking that it's an Italian, sweetly with a hint of sarcasm, "I'm sorry I should've been careful. It is my fault entirely. I should've been paying attention."
Bani finally looked up when she didn't hear any response and when she was done with her dress. She found the most beautiful brown eyes staring back at her, which you can drown yourself into. She saw a smooth shaven jaw and cheeks with an amusing smile appearing on the stranger's face. The man was quite built and his undertone muscle could be seen through his classy business suit. It seemed like he just came straight from a business meeting His voice was full of class and huskiness. He seemed Indian to her but his accent betrayed his appearance. He had black hair with little white hair starting to appear at the widow's peak and the hair was all gelled back, she noticed. His straight posture and gentleness was dawning on her. He was a perfect candidate for marriage in look-wise, she thought. All the while that she was admiring this handsome person, she missed him talking to her and trying to bring her back to reality.
Once she was out of her revere, she noticed that the stranger was smiling at her in amusement and waiting for her to stop gapping, which brought a slight blush to her cheeks. This amused the stranger further.
Bani in embarrassment but recovering quickly: "I'm sorry I missed what you were saying."
Stranger tried to hide his mischievous smile and tried to act that he didn't hindi: "I'm sorry. I didn't get what you were saying in the beginning but I said that I'm sorry it was entirely my fault. I should've been watching where I was going."
Bani: "It's ok. It wasn't really you're fault I was thinking of…" she trailed off realizing what she was going to say next, which cause her to blush.
Stranger: "Since it was my drink, so it's my fault. And since it's my fault I'm going to make it up to you right now."
Bani quickly responds: "No, no, no. You don't have to at all. I'll be fine. I was just heading back to my hotel room anyways so you don't need to bother with any trouble at all for me." "jab kasoor tumhara hai toh yeh fair hai," she says under her breath.
Stranger: "I insist that you do come with me because if you didn't then I'll feel that you didn't forgive me. So please accept this token as my apology."
After much persuasion from the stranger, Bani gave in to him and his silly attempts of persuading her. They headed towards the nearest dress shop to buy Bani's dress. In the shop Bani told the stranger her plans for the night and the stranger asked to accompany her, in spite of her polite denials. But she gave in thinking that she owed him that much.
They spent the rest of the evening exploring and talking about just random stuff. Bani got to know that the man grew up here because of his knowledge of the city and his Italian accent. She was impressed by his intelligence of the city and she admired him all this time.
They had dinner in one of the open restaurants. There Bani found out that the man lived most of his life in this city and then he moved back to his country now to help out in their family business. She discovered that this was his last year here in Venice and was going to miss it once he was gone. The enjoyed their evening and before they parted their ways, they finally decided to disclose their identities to each other. She learned that his name was Jai, but she never gave much thought of him being an Indian or any big name, even though it sounded familiar to her. Being in Italy she figured that a lot of men were similar to desis in appearance and his accent didn't let her think much on it.
The next day when Bani was at the conference meeting for her company she found out that Jai Walia was the same man she met last night. This shocked her and angered her because she embarrassed her self last night by insulting him in hindi last night. So after the meeting Jai apologized to her and they laughed off the whole thing. From that day on they became good friends and met each other everyday because the Walia Group of Industries had bagged a contract with her company.
Present day: Remembering this incident it brought a beautiful smile to her face. She knew from day one that Jai was stubborn and arrogant businessman but at the same time fair and sweet man. She smiled at the apologizing incident from Jai after their business meeting. His silly and desperate attempts caused her to laugh a little for a while but then remembering his words from yesterday brought her back to her gloomy mood.
She decided to take a walk down the bridge and while walking she saw an event that reminded her of a saying, "Never blame any day in your life. Good days give you happiness. Bad days give you experience. Both are essential in life. All are Gods' blessings."
She now knew what she had to do. With a determined look on her face she turned around and ran back to her house with a decision.
