Part XIII

The waves splashed around Bani Dixit's feet as she walked unhurriedly along the Juhu shore, wading in ankle deep water. She had left the office earlier than usual and had driven straight to the shore to pacify her troubled mind and to seek answers from within her own self. One glance at the vast, limitless sea and she wasn't sure whether she would be able to help herself today at all – the sea was too beautiful and demanded all her attention. The glows of the sun as it was steadily traveling along its trajectory to dive deeper into the sea astounded her as usual and she made a pretty picture standing there gazing at the crimson sun.

Main teri, dil tera, yeh jaan teri
Teri mohabbat hai pehchann meri
Mein aaj kaheti hoon yeh sabkey aagey
Ek din yeh kahe doongi yeh rab ke aagey
Tujh ko hi jigri banana padega …

The strains lilted in the salty wind from a FM radio set, nestled in the trolley of a local street hawker, and pervaded Bani's senses jolting her back to reality. Her head pounded as she thought over the proceedings during the last few days, especially after the engagements. Now, Jai's actions were making sense to her – no he hadn't been conscious of them, Bani was sure. Jai Walia was the last person in the world to hurt her and Bani Dixit knew it, no body could take away this belief from her. She had always treated Jai as her special friend and her thoughts drifted away ….

….

Jai had settled down in Chicago and Bani had returned home and to her simple and uninteresting lifestyle in Mumbai. She had joined her graduation course along with Mary, though they were pretty estranged from Nisha now, with Nisha's parents squarely blaming the duo for the misfortune that their daughter had suffered in NY, completely oblivious to their daughter's fault.

It was on a sunny evening, a few months after the trip, that Bani had sat down to check her e-mails. She wasn't too much of a regular in this arena and her inbox seemed to be exploding. She scrolled down the various messages when a name caught her attention – Jai Walia. Walia??? the name rung a bell in her mind, but there cant be only one Walia family in the entire city, she thought. Scrunching her nose, she checked the date, the mail was due by 4 days. Suddenly her heart picked up the tempo and very cautiously she clicked on the mail. A medium sized mail opened in front of her, the writer trying to make her remember his identity but in vain. There was not need for re-identification; she had known Jai the instant she had glanced upon his name in the inbox life. Her heart elated with joy.

Jai had written how he had settled down in US, how his course was progressing and how much he was missing India and his near and dear ones. At the end he had made a request to Bani to answer back if she had recognized him and also that, if he were in India, he definitely would have taken the initiative to know her better. An unsure Bani closed the mail and started thinking whether it would be prudent to answer him back. She was of course grateful to him for saving the three of them at NY, but being the introvert and reserved person that she was, was she ready to make friends with a stranger? The question circled in her mind continuously for the next two days and finally feeling exasperated, she decided to reply to the mail, in a very mundane manner.

However, she found herself replying eagerly to the 'flagged' mail with too much enthusiasm than she would really prefer it herself. And then waited with bated breath to find out if she had made a fool out of herself. She didn't have to wait for long. The very next day she received another mail from Jai who had thanked her profusely but had added that if she didn't feel comfortable, she didn't have to reply at all and he would surely understand her predicament. Bani felt a little embarrassed and then replied immediately ststaing that it was not so and that she would definitely answer his mails. That started their life-long association, and today Bani was thankful to the stars for giving her the courage and wisdom for answering 'that' mail.

Jai had returned to India after 5 years and he was now 31. Though Uday Walia was favourable to the idea of Jai settling down in USA, the thought had barely flitted through Jai's mind and he was convinced that he would return to his country once his education was over. And he did exactly that. Bani knew about his return and was very happy that she would finally get the chance to meet her dear friend. Last time Jai came to India about 2 years back, she was away with her family for a tour in Rajasthan. She didn't go to the airport cos she knew that his family members would be there to receive him back. Jai later had told her that he had expected her to be there at the Airport and was dying to meet her.

Meet they did but after a couple of days. Jai had joined his Father's business and was busy on this count. But he threw a party for his friends celebrating his return and invited Bani and Mary to the party. Bani had never sought to know much about his family since she had noted that in his mails, Jai was not very keen to talk much about them. But she knew that he belonged to a very prominent and rich family in Mumbai. Likewise, Jai had never enquired much about Bani's personal life, though it was a strange circumstance that bound the two of them together. The party was organised at the Taj Mahal Hotel so there was no scope that Bani would recognize Jai as the scion of the Walia clan, with whom the Dixits were not supposed to stay in touch.

It was at the party that the truth came out about Jai's lineage when Bani saw Uday Uncle thumping Jai affectionately on his back. She had just come in with Mary and the site had stopped her dead in her tracks. At that very moment, Jai's eyes stopped on Bani near the gate and his heart missed a few beats. He was seeing her after such a long time and she looked heavenly in a simple but elegant black figure-hugging short churidar, embellished with Swavaroski crystals at the neck and hands. In a room full of human sea wave, she stood out as a quintessential pearl. Mary was also with her and they were both staring at him. Jai quickly excused himself and made his way towards the ladies to usher them in. as he made his way through the crowded floor, Bani couldn't help but notice how handsome he looked in the black tux and how he stood out from every other male in the room. But the truth of their identity, now revealed to her, disturbed her enormously and when Jai insisted her on joining the party, she refused saying that she was to go to some other party with Mary, much to Mary's surprise, and that she would contact him later. She dragged an unsuspecting Mary out of the party zone leaving a surprised Jai behind. The rest of the party was all gall and wormwood to Jai while Bani, on her way home, explained to Mary the real reason for her sudden departure, but feeling extremely guilty.

Jai had called her at night, straight after retiring to his room, and asked her point blank the real reason for her departure. When Bani tried to fib, he put on a sterner stance and told her that he knows his friend well and that he would appreciate if she treated her as an equal and told him as her real friend, especially after her disappointing behaviour when they had met after such a long time. Unable to restrain herself any longer, Bani had slowly told him the real truth behind their identity and that she was Rakesh Dixit's daughter and he was Uday Walia's son. The past history between the two families zoomed in front of Jai and he was speechless in total shock and surprise. He calmed down Bani and promised to call her next morning.

True to his word, he called Bani around 8 in the morning and told her that he saw no reason why their friendship should suffer just because their Fathers could not get along with each other in life. Bani was still hesitant. Jai then did the impossible; he approached his Father and told him how he was friends with Bani Dixit, Rakesh Dixit's daughter and that whether he had any objections. Needless to say, Uday Walia was livid with rage. But Jai told him in no uncertain term sthat he would not destroy his present due to his Father's past. Held a hostage to the situation by his only son, Uday Walia had no way out but to give in, though he did not accept Bani as Jai's friend or whatever and said that he didn't want to see her in his house as long as he lived.

The daredevil in Jai Walia broke the fence when he visited the Dixit Residence the next day and told Rakesh and Arundhati Dixit his true identity. And how Bani and he were good friends and intended to remain so inspite of their Father's troubling past. The Dixits were surprised at his cheek but unlike Uday Walia, Rakesh Dixit was cool-headed so he tried to reason out with Jai. Bani was not at home at that time. So when she returned home, she was in for a shock to see Jai chilling out with her parents and sister and the Dixits addressing him as 'son'. Apparently, Jai had won them over.

Bani had not entered the Walia House as long as Senior Walia was alive. And only when he passed away 2 years later due to a surprise heart attack, did she ever visit Jai and Masi at their house.

And since then the journey of the two friends had continued – on the path that their Fathers had discarded long back.

………..

The past played spools of their life in front of Bani's eyes as darkness engulfed the city. After her family, Jai was the most important person in her life, Bani thought. Then she mentally slapped herself for forgetting about Mayank, isn't it Mayank that she is supposed to marry after a few weeks, Bani thought? She was a very stable person, then why is her heart behaving like a traitor now? Unable to find answers to her own questions, Bani sighed heavily and then trundled along the shore towards the parking lot, her foot prints etching deeply on the sand, mingling with the other footprints.

As Bani entered the car and switched on the dash light, she noticed that there were 4 missing calls from Mayank. She hadn't noticed him calling; her phone was on a silent mode. Yes, she had to talk to Mayank. Urgently. And with Jai too.

But from ur update it feels like the feelings are mutual...so whats the problem???
Loved the update.. 👏 👏 👏

I think Mayank will understand...I mean who in their right minds would want to compete with Jai Walia esp. when the affections of a woman are concerned...I think he will back off... (well he better 😡 )
