"What's your specialty Iqbal?" asked Bani, trying to divert her mind from Jai. She had to yell to be overheard, otherwise the wind whipping her hair onto her face, also whipped away her words. "Are you some type of surgeon?" she queried further. Iqbal fit the classic mold thus far.
Iqbal's chin dimpled as he favored her with a winning smile. "No. I'm a dentist. An orthodontist actually." He studied her face. "Has anyone ever told you that you have a beautiful smile?" he said to Bani.
Blood rushed into Bani's face as she shook her head. He looked rather blurry through her curtain of hair. "No. Never" she replied trying not to blush so obviously.
This one might still be a keeper, even if he had a DDS instead of a MD. Charm wasn't an easy commodity to come by. And at least he wasn't a gynecologist or a proctologist, thought Bani.
"It's because you have excellent teeth. Were they always so perfect or did you wear braces?" asked Iqbal.
Bani put her vote for charm on hold until further inspection. If they were going to discuss teeth and mouths all night, she'd be bored to death. Visions of the weatherman attacked her and she pushed them away with sheer force. At least an obsession with teeth couldn't put her in mortal danger or get her arrested she thought.
"I had braces" replied Bani.
Looking in the rear view mirror, Bani didn't find the jeep and she breathed a deep sigh of relief. Either it hadn't been Jai's jeep or Jai had come to his senses and decided to leave her alone? pondered Bani.
"I know dentistry isn't the most exciting career in the world, but it provides for a good lifestyle" said Iqbal and he patted his steering wheel with practically a caress. "I have a nice home. A yacht. I get to travel a lot. I'm never strapped for cash. And I don't get called out in the middle of the night much."
"Sooooo, what do you do?" he asked Bani.
"I'm a VP of marketing in the family business. I'm in men's pants" replied Bani. She bit back a smile at the family's standing joke. When Iqbal cast her a disbelieving glance, Bani chuckled and shook her head.
"Really, we manufacture men's suits. Like your job, it's nothing exciting, but we make a decent living" said Bani.
Iqbal frowned, peered into his rear view mirror and said "There's a crazy jeep weaving in and out of traffic behind us. He's been following us for a while now."
"He has?" asked Bani. Her heart dropped. Damn you Jai! She turned in her seat and made eye contact with the maniac.
"Get lost!" she mouthed at her swarthy nemesis hoping to catch his eye, knowing that wouldn't be enough to thwart him from his self-imposed mission, but hoping nonetheless.
"You said something?" asked Iqbal half turned in his seat.
"No. Nothing" replied Bani. She seethed. Jai was following her. The nerve of him! What did he think he was doing?
Iqbal turned off the highway and they were at the Bistro within a few moments. "That guy's still behind us. I don't like this. I'm going to have a few words with him. Stay here Bani" said Iqbal in an irritated tone now.
Bani put a restraining hand on her date's forearm as he opened the car door and stepped onto the pavement. "It's probably just a coincidence. Let it go" she said.
She shot a killer glare at Jai who stared back with those damnable unfathomable eyes. He didn't even have the courtesy to acknowledge her with a change of expression or a nod.
"I don't like the look of this guy. He could be bad news" said Iqbal.
Swallowing her pride, Bani closed her eyes dreading what she had to confess and her date's reaction. "He's following me. He thinks we're engaged" she told Iqbal.
When Bani reopened her eyes, Iqbal pierced her with a strange look, and held his hands out, palms straight up. "Look. I don't want to get in the middle of any lover's quarrel" he said to Bani.
Scrunching her nose, Bani said, "Don't worry. We're not actually engaged. It's a long story, but basically, our families have decided we're betrothed. He's taking it more seriously than I am. But he's harmless. A pain in the butt, but harmless" said Bani with extreme frustration.
Iqbal closed the convertible top and glared at Jai who had unfolded his length from his jeep and leant against it, his arms folded across his chest. Jai glared back at them.
"I don't know about this. I still don't like that wild glint in his eye. Want me to tell him to get lost? You're my girl tonight" suggested Iqbal.
He then strode to Bani with a swagger designed to make the other man green through and through and kissed her, letting his lips linger.
"If we ignore him, he'll disappear" said Bani. She waved to Jai with a small smile playing around her lips. Jai wearing blue faded jeans and a white shirt with vertical stripes on it (courtesy shina, his dress designer), looking like a hunk himself, stood against his jeep and glared back at Bani, his hands fisted in his pockets, he looked ready to punch the day lights out of Bani's blind date and if necessary, Bani too.
The parking lot began to fill up as a little foreign job was followed in by a Cadillac, a limo, and a Mercedes. Other patrons emerged from their vehicles, most notably a young woman about Bani's age with stunning dark brown hair and a model's figure. Bani looked twice to make sure it wasn't Jai's crazy girlfriend. That's all she needed tonight. It wasn't lacey, so Bani breathed a big sigh of relief.
Snaking his arm around Bani's middle, Iqbal murmured something funny in her ear that made her giggle and guided her into the restaurant from where fantastic aromas emanated.
Palm and palmetto trees shaded the rustic looking building. A picture of a silly crab with a mallet next to it greeted them. Street lamps and light from the restaurant skipped across the calm surface of the canal that bordered the restaurant.
Behind them a motorcycle varoomed. Some day, she'd let loose and ride one, Bani promised herself. Looking up at Iqbal through her lashes, Bani asked, "Do you ride motorcycles by any chance? I'd love to ride with you." She made her voice as sultry as possible in case Jai was listening. No way was she going to turn around to search for him and give him the satisfaction of knowing that she cared whether or not he was there, but she imagined that he was still following. They'd come much too far south for his presence here to be purely coincidental.
When the waitress asked them where they'd like to sit, Bani immediately answered, "Outside by the water." On second thought, she turned to Iqbal and asked, "Is that okay with you?"
"I'll follow you to the ends of the Earth, pretty lady. Lead the way" replied Iqbal.
Why was such a charmer footloose? Frowning, Bani turned to him and peered into his handsome face. "Are you sure you're single?" she asked him with a suspicious look.
Bani then took his hand, spread his fingers wide in exaggeration, and inspected his ring finger. "No ring marks. No tan line. Guess you're legitimately single or else you're the type that never wears a ring" she continued probing.
"Why do ask that?" said Iqbal. He spoke with a chuckle in his voice. With his free hand, he raked his fingers through his already unruly hair.
"Because you're just too charming to be single. A handsome, eligible dentist should've been snapped up a long time ago" said Bani.
Unless he was gay ………. she mumbled.. Could her radar be that far out of whack? Granted, she didn't date that much, but surely she could tell that much?
Bani instantly regretted her words when clouds shadowed Iqbal's eyes. Open mouth, insert foot. If she could bowtie her tongue, she would.
"Look, that was a dumb thing to ask. Forget I said anything" said Bani apologetically.
Iqbal's lopsided grin slowly reformulated. "I recently broke up with my girlfriend. No biggie. Life goes on" he said to her. The tone of his voice didn't match the cavalier quality of his words, but she wasn't going to push him for more in-depth answers. She barely knew him.
Iqbal held out a chair for her and pushed it in after she was seated, the perfect gentleman. As he lowered his long frame into his chair, he loosened his tie and unbuttoned his top button, stretching his neck. "Ahh. I can breathe again. Ties and I don't get along very well" he told Bani.
"So take it off. No need to be so formal here" suggested Bani. She inclined her head at the couple next to them, both wearing white bibs with huge silly crabs painted on the front. They were pounding the poor crabs with wooden mallets, making quite a mess, splattering shells all over their table.
"I see what you mean" Iqbal whispered conspiratorially, a twinkle in his eye. Yanking off his tie, he stuffed it in his pocket and unbuttoned another button on his white shirt. Stretching out his long legs, he leaned back in his chair and tossed Bani a wicked grin.
"Much better. I'm human again" he declared.
Leaning forward, his elbows propped on the table, Iqbal glanced over Bani's shoulder. In a low voice, he said, "You know your friend is sitting two tables behind us and he's not taken his eyes off you once. He acts like more than a family friend. What's the real deal here Bani?.
He then reached across the table and took Bani's hand, spreading her fingers, paying particular attention to her ring finger. "Baby smooth skin. No tan line" he said mimicking Bani. "Guess you're not hiding a ring either. Would you like to be?" His finger traced her palm as he peered at it. "You know, you have a very long life line and an even longer love line" added Iqbal.
He was good. Very, very good agreed Bani. He must have women lined up trying to get his attention.
Leaning toward him, Bani shook her head slightly, trying to hide the wide grin that threatened to escape, tickled with her date and confused by Jai.
"I bet you're popular. A palm reading dentist" said Bani finally. Her voice quavered.
Jai hadn't taken his eyes off her? What did he think he was doing? And why?
Trying to get her mind off Jai, Bani asked, "Do you read tarots, too Iqbal?"
"That's an idea. I'll give a free palm reading with every set of braces. Drum up more business that way" snorted Iqbal.
"See how long I'd be in business if this gets out. I'm swearing you to secrecy Bani" he continued while grinning at the same time.
Then he glared at Jai. "Tell me, Bani. Do you want to be engaged to that guy? Do you love him? I'm feeling some undercurrents here. I can help you make him jealous as long as you don't think he'd beat me up" asked Iqbal.
He held up his hands and wiggled his fingers. "I need these artist's hands to perform my work you see" trying to explain why he did not want to get into a fight.
Tilting back her head, letting her hair caress her neck, Bani sighed and rolled her head to get the kinks out of her shoulders. The moon shone full upon them and she wondered if its power was what was making Jai so crazy as to follow her. Full moons did weird things to people.
"I love him, but he doesn't love me. He wants to marry me but I don't want to marry him" said Bani in a barely audible tone, while she traced the rim of her water glass with her fingertip, trying to avoid looking at Iqbal, least he saw the tears that were beginning to form in her eyes.
"Well that's perfectly clear Bani" remarked Iqbal.
He then pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket, nudged bani under the table and passed it on to her. Then he laughed mockingly and leaned back in his chair, balancing on two legs "Tell me why you love him Bani, but won't marry him? And I have to hear why he wants to marry you if he doesn't love you, and most importantly, why do you feel you need to hide your tears from me and behave like this family friend does not make a damn difference to you. I may come across as a handsome dumb as* dentist to you Bani, but my heart is in the right place, so please …… indulge me will you" said Iqbal in a very loving and sincere tone.
"You're not worth the tears, you're not worth the heartache. I don't know why I give you the time.
You're not worth the pain, you're not worth the emptiness ….. yet I don't know why I still secretly wish you were mine. "
