Part 30

Overjoyed Jai and Bani didn't realize when it was 3 months into the pregnancy.
Like all waiting-to-become parents, they tried to make the most of it.

One evening Jai came home with a new digital camera. Bani wondered why he had got a new one since they had a Nikon already! After dinner he made bani pose because he wanted to have pictures of Bani in all her avatars. Bani readily agreed and they took photographs of her little bulging belly. Jai was preparing an entire gallery.

Bani had her cravings like all other pregnant women and Jai made sure he fulfilled all of them.
One night Bani woke up at 4 am and started sulking. Jai, scared, got up and asked her what was wrong.

Jai- Bani whats wrong, is everything alright?

Bani- I want keiri (raw mango)

Jai- from where will I get that. Il get you that the first thing in the morning

Bani- no Jai I want it now.

Jai- love, tell me from where I can get it at this hour and il get it

Bani- we have a mango tree in the backyard, from there…

She was yet sulking more like cribbing and since Jai didn't want to disappoint her he agreed.

Jai- ok…give me 15 minutes. I will be right back.

Jai left and he was in deep thought as to how at 4 in the morning to get Bani raw mango's for her. Suddenly he went near the tree and started climbing it! He climbed and fell and then climbed again and got her 7 raw mangoes since that was her favorite number!

Suddenly she started feeling nausea ness very frequently. Thinking its normal in pregnancy Bani didn't do anything about it. Time passed and her health started to deteriorate. Not taking any chances she went to the doctor who failing to understand the exact problem advised her a full medical check-up.

The results came and as she feared something was wrong. She was advised to abort the child since she was suffering from brain tumor. Though it was found in its nascent stages, she couldn't under go any treatment if she was pregnant. The doctor gave her a maximum of 3 days to decide because time was running out and if she did want to abort the child it would have to be now and also if she wanted to start with the treatment it was now.

For the next three days all Bani did was think. She knew how much the child meant to Jai and how much Jai meant to her. She decided that she had no right to kill any body and by aborting her child she was going to die of guilt and even then there was no guarantee that she would be cured.

Thinking of how happy Jai was now she had no heart to abort the baby. Jai had never been so happy. His face had never shone so much. He had plans for the baby all set and ready to be implemented. He worked harder now because he knew that he had an additional responsibility now.

The 3rd morning Bani went to her doctor and told her that she couldn't abort the child and if that meant dying but leaving Jai with their child she was ready to do that.

Her health was becoming worse and when inquired she just told Jai it was because of the pregnancy.

They sat together when the baby first kicked and they sat nights at a stretch thinking of a name for the baby. They didn't know the sex of the baby and hence decided on Rehaan for a son and Khushi for a daughter.

Time passed and the D-day was nearing. Suddenly she had to be rushed to the hospital. She told the doctors not to say anything to Jai about her condition. She delivered a daughter and when the doctor came to tell Jai the news she also broke the news of Bani dying. She told him that Bani barely had anytime left. Jai who was ecstatic forgot all about his new born daughter for that minute.

He then went in and saw bani. Bani realized that Jai had come to know.

When he saw how weak Bani was tears began rushing down his cheeks.

He whispered.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier? Why did you hide this from me?"

She looked at him. And smiled weakly at him.
"I didn't tell you because I knew you would not have been able to take it and our daughter wouldn't have come into this world then. I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you to worry. I wanted to spend my last days with you cheerfully." Jai looked at her.

"You can't leave me!" he said.
"What will I be without you?"

"You'll be who you are now. I will always be there by your side. Never forget that. Cherish those times. Live life happily. Keep our daughter happy. And one more thing."

"Yes?" Jai said

"I love you" And she died.

Jai screamed.
He still couldn't accept Bani's death

he stood there holding his daughter in his hands with tears rolling down!!!
