PART 50(II)

Long ago a very rich Gujarati businessman had admitted his wife at this hospital after a horrific car accident. The poor woman had been pregnant at the time and without her husband knowing she had instructed the doctors to save her child at any cost, including at the cost of her own life. The child was born, and soon afterwards the selfless mother had passed away, but not before telling her husband the truth about her choice.

The businessman was in awe of his wife's altruism – and that too for an unborn child. The bond that had already formed between the mother and the child she was carrying was a little beyond his comprehension. What she saw as a plain and simple decision, he saw as her greatness and sacrifice. In her memory he had built a large mandir within the hospital grounds with the most beautiful murti of Amba Maata in it. She was the symbol of motherhood and he saw his wife in her.

Since then many people had come to pay their respects here – whether to thank Ma for her blessing in the form of their newborn, or to question her as to why a child had bee taken away from them.

The rain worsened and the darkness showed no signs of abating as one more person came to Amba Maata's door…
