Background:
Panchali had just escaped an attack by Jayadratha. According to what Ghatotkatcha later says (yes, I do have citation for those wanting proof), Jayadratha was sent to attack her on purpose. The Pandavas decided to go into hiding. Under the cover of the forests, they made their move to the desert nation of Matsya.
Panchali had to hide among the women in the palace. Given the recent attempt on her, they couldn't leave her without a bodyguard, either. One of the men had to be with her. But how?
Yudhishtira could bore an assailant to death, but that wasn't a valuable talent under the circumstances. Bheema could easily protect her, but no one would let a giant of a man into the ladies' apartments. Nakula and Sahadeva were available, but Arjuna could provide a better excuse than them for being in the women's palace. In addition to being drop-dead gorgeous and the foremost archer of the land, he could sing and dance.
Events:
Arjuna, the object of women's desires in Aryavarta, became a woman to gain entry into the ladies' apartments. He sacrificed his masculinity to protect a woman in need. He'd committed an error in the dice hall by supporting his older brother. After witnessing the sexual assault perpetrated by Karna and Dusshasana, Arjuna HAD spoken up (yes, I have citation), but this would show in a much bigger way how much he regretted the events from more than a decade ago.
Dashing Arjuna became Brihannala. Which, I'm told, means "Big Reed."☺️😆 A bit of soothing to his ego, I suppose.
Fast forward a year. Keechaka attacked. An invisible demon- protector twirled Keechaka around. Panchali had only one protector WITHIN the palace. Bheema was in the kitchens. ARJUNA saved her. But he wouldn't win against muscleman Keechaka in a face-to-face. Nor could an arrow be explained away as easily as a broken neck. Panchali applied some thought to it and asked Bheema to take care of it. BOTH Bheema and Arjuna made up for what they'd failed to do in the dice hall.
Fast forward one more month. They had a problem. Uttara's reputation. Arjuna asserted to Raja Virat that he considered Uttara his daughter. But Arjuna's word wasn't enough. He was a known stud, after all. Then came the story. He claimed he'd been rendered impotent. He had his own son marry Uttara, instead of any of his brothers' progeny wedding her.
What a man Arjuna was. Others donated money. Sometimes, teeth😆. Arjuna donated his reputation, his masculinity to protect 2 women. He was mocked for his saree-clad appearance by his enemies, but even in that garb, he showed them he was more of a man than they could ever hope to be. No wonder Vyasa called him Narottama.
