Chapter 16
The two of the quickly untangled form each other's arms and Nandini put a safe distance between them just in time before Cabir spotted them.
"Guys, we are so screwed. The flight landed early and I couldn't find mom anywhere. I think she..." before he could continue, Nandini completed for him, "She went home. We need to rush back before she reaches or you and I will not hear the end of it."
She might have been half serious. Their mother was rather dramatic and always made sure there was some or other mini scandal going around just for the heck of it. The three of them settled back into the car and it was no time before they reached Nandini's driveway. Much to their horror, the front door was open.
"She's back. We're late." Cabir huffed in a loud sigh as he got down and without waiting for Nandini or Manik almost ran towards the house.
"Maaammmaaa." Cabir almost threw himself onto a lady in her late forties. She had short hair and was dressed in a black button down shirt and blue jeans.
"Welcome home my kid." She said in a mocking tone.
Nandini spotted the luggage just beside the couch, which meant she hadn't been inside for long.
Heyy Maaa." She went right ahead pushing Cabir out of her way and hugging her mother.
"Hi my baby, how are you? Oh my god, you look so grown up." She smiled lovingly at her.
"What grown up? You talk to her every day. Look at me, I'm the one who isn't fed well." Cabir tried to get the attention but him mother just laughed and patted him on his cheeks with adoration
"And who is this handsome young man in our house? Nandini did you select someone for me?" her mom said in mock horror as she looked past them at Manik and he just began chuckling
"C'mon aunty, you don't recognize me?" he touched her feet as a sign of respect and she blessed him.
"How can I ever not recognize you Manik? I love you more than these two monkeys." She said.
"I love you more than them too but I love your food more." He said obviously with sincerity. Manik loved the dosas her mother made, he would usually have at least six-seven of those and would demand more in the next half hour.
"Come over for dinner tonight then. I think it's high time that I feed you kids well. But first let me settle down. It's going to be a long time." She smiled and Cabir and Manik took one suitcase each and went up the stairs towards her room.
Nandini was happy. Her mother was back, just for a short time but it meant so much to her. Her mother had a job that included a lot of staying away from home but whenever she came back she made sure she made up for the lost time. Somehow Nandini felt content, her family was complete; mom, Cabir and Manik. The three who meant the most to her were here, in her life and they were happy. She couldn't ask for anytime more.
Once her mother was settled and fresh, Manik left promising to come back for dinner. Nandini walked him till the door to bid him goodbye and he mischievously sneaked in a peck on her cheek before running off. Nandini looked around to make sure that her mom and Cabir had not seen the expression of love.
They spent the rest of the evening chatting and bickering over the things that had happened while their mother wasn't in town over the past few months. Their mother had gotten gifts for them, she got Nandini a pair of black heels teasing that she was short, half a dozen boxes of chocolates and lots of accessories. While cabir just looked at her pile with jealousy their mom handed him two gift wrapped boxes.
In excitement he opened them and he again almost pounced on his mother for the second time that day. She had gotten him a vintage Rolex in one box and a Louis Vuitton leather belt in the other box.
"These two make up for the hundred things that you got for the tiny tot." he told his mother as he adorned the watch onto his wrist.
It was almost 7pm by the time they were exhausted and done with their small dose of bonding. Their mom went to the kitchen to prep for dinner which had to be amazing since it wasn't just her two kids she was feeding but also her favourite neighborhood boy.
Around 8:30 the bell rang and Nandini almost ran to open the door. Manik stood there, in all his heavenly spirit. He wore black jeans, a white V-neck t-shirt that showed his well toned muscles. In his hands he held on large bouquet of flower. Nandini's senses were already mesmerized by the treat he gave to her visuals as well as smelling capacities.
"Are those for me?" she whispered looking at the bouquet and then him hopefully.
He gave her a look and then scoffed saying, "You're not the only pretty lady in the house that I want to impress."
Nandini realized those were for her mother. She gave way to manik to enter the house smiling at her own stupidity and at manik's words.
The dinner was a fun affair. Manik was his charming self, cabir managed to pull everyone's legs and Nandini preferred staying quite and listening to the people she cherished. But at some point during dinner, Manik slowly slid his hand onto Nandini's. It was under the table so her mother and cabir couldn't see, but the way she was blushing was certainly out in the open. She tried to get her hand out of his grip but he just looked at her with one of his signature smirks. Finally she stomped on his foot and he released her hand, this caught her mother's attention, but she hardly looked for a second so Nandini didn't ponder over it much.
Once everyone was done eating, Nandini helped her mother clear the dishes while Cabir and Manik went out to get ice-cream for them.
"Nandini, is everything all right with you?" her mother asked as they were clearing the plates.
She looked at her mother perplexed. Did her mother find something fishy? Did she already see through Nandini's facade? Nandini was fumbling for a minute but then she just smiled and quickly left the room before her mother could call her.
----
So that's all for today. What do you think happened? Did her mom figure things out? What do you think will happen ahead?
