KY2 and social causes/issues

To be honest, I was mainly attracted to this show initially because of the music (song selection is always so on point, *applause*) and of course Manan and their brilliant chemistry, but now that 170 odd episodes have aired, I have realized that there is so much more to this show than a college romance, epic friendships and great music. It takes a lot of guts and risk to raise awareness on teenage/women-related issues and social causes on national TV, especially in our "regressive" country. KY2 has consistently tried to bring to the forefront, issues facing the youth these days and also solutions to these problems. Be it homosexuality and how being gay is not a condition/disease which can be magically cured, and how everyone is entitled to love whoever they want to. Teenage pregnancy, the dos/don'ts, using protection, choosing and waiting for the right partner and how education/employment cannot be denied just because the girl is pregnant. In today's stress-filled world, being depressed/lost/confused or feeling suicidal has become rather common. Mukti, Shahid and Cabir all attempted to commit suicide, sure for different reasons, but somewhere there was a binding element. Loneliness? One cure for all, friends, someone who gave them a good whack on the head and reminded them of the beauty of life and how no problem, big or small, is unsolvable when they work together. Soha and her "condition", very few parents these days will readily agree that their disturbed child needs professional help. Woh pagal nahi hai! She is just being a spoilt teen. Apne aap teek ho jayegi. No, apne aap teek nahi hogi! Psychiatrists are not pagal logon ke doctors. They are life coaches, they are professionals who help to gain a perspective on life when you are feeling otherwise lost and confused. Mentality has to change, otherwise there will be more cases like Soha, who will harm themselves and those around them because their guardians refuse to acknowledge that their ward needs help. Women being judged based on their clothes and attitude. The #ItsNotUsItsYou campaign, though initially I was a little sceptical about the whole thing, it was presented very well (don't know why I doubt the writers, they know and do their job very well). I think they concentrated more on the clothes aspect because in India, usually victim blaming in the case of rape/abuse/eve-teasing revolves around the victim's outfit. Sad but true that in our nation, people assume that our clothes define us. Bold kapde pehenti hain toh vichaar bhi modern aur bold honge. Aunty/uncle, galti humhare kapde mein nahi hai, galti aapke vichaar/mentality mein hain. Hopefully, people will realize that sari ho ya short dress, if men don't change their attitude and start respecting women, nothing is going to change in this country. Bulimia/eating disorders, this is one issue I was hoping the writers would shine some light on. I have younger cousins and friends who are obsessed with their weight and body. Based on yesterday's episode, I'm hoping Alya is not pregnant and the issue is stress eating/bulimia or something similar. Another issue that I am hoping will be brought to the forefront is abuse by a person at a higher position and in power, boss/teacher/celebrity, or someone known to the victim, father/brother/uncle. They tackled the celebrity aspect by bringing down the corrupt gadha politician. Panditji and the whole guru/shishya relationship is pure nonsense might help inform young people about what is a good touch versus a bad touch and how when in doubt about a person's intentions, tell a friend or trusted elder, don't hide or cover-up, because you will regret later. Ok this is my two cents about KY2. I truly appreciate the hard work and thought put into this show by the writers, creatives and makers. Thank you.
P.S. I forgot to mention Mukti's drug addiction. I like the way the issue was handled. Alya finding out and confronting Mukti, Mukti denying, Alya asking Manik to speak to Mukti, Mukti's outburst and self-realization and then coping with the issue by going to a rehab. Once again it was proved that if one talks about the issue and tries to figure out the reason behind it by recruiting the help of their loved ones, he/she can be saved.

Do check my other post too about fan wishes regarding KY2,

Since I am on a posting spree, here's hoping that the writers tackle Soha's "illness" and Alya's "eating disorder" issues well in the coming episodes. Cheers!
