I felt the same thing during the Icecream scene, the only way she can bring his smile back is by holding him in that bone-crushing hug...he only finds relief and solace through those, and in her arms..even when he did not know it, he only found his peace there, with her: she is his home.
And he seems to have walked away from it, because he is angry..like a child, who thinks no one loves him, and walks out of a room, and hides in the house, under the table, behind the curtain, waiting for someone to find him and hold him while he tells them how scared he was, and how sad.
Manik needs that so much. And Parth- he leaves me astounded by the amount of emotions that flash in his eyes and on his ways, within a matter of seconds. That man is a beautiful artist.

So, yes, those hugs (for me) instead of sensual kisses or whatever, would be the sign of their strong love and connection to one another.
I also recall the shower episode, the first one, where Nandini had said she won't wear that shirt and those shorts, and he was all
' toh kya kaanjivaram ki saaree laau tumhare liye?'
And i remember i had said it then to myself: beta, u will. one day soon, u will get ANYTHING she desires, at ANY time of the night or day. So, say what u want to now😆
Anyway, the ice cream scene was so LOVE. Nandini was tender today, she knew. She knows. And I'm glad she asserted that knowledge too.
when his friends were going all out about his anger and hatred for nandini, SHE knew because like he said- she protects him, the softest part of the hard coconut shell..
I hope now, since he was listening to her patiently, he'll not do any of this fake-torture thing anymore, a different approach, sure..but this one won't help..
