Manik has to set his priorities straight first ...he needs to balance his love and friendship both, he cannot put Fab5 ahead of Nandini always
On one hand he wants Dhruv to be happy with Nandini, without taking her feelings in consideration and on the other hand he keeps coming in btwn of them all the time...
See like you said it's an act - he is selfish, he is selfless and that is the contradiction of his life. He has done everything for his friends, he is a non-entity in his own eyes hence he feels yeah giving up on love easy for me and the right thing. What he doesn't understand and sees is that he has given up on true love and broken Nandini beyond repair- the moment he notices it , the whole act is over. He knows the choice he will make then , just like he was aware of his choice when he started falling for Nandu , that if it will be between Dhruv and her, he will save friendship. he underestimates himself and his love.
He is 19-20 , he will learn to go through it, sometimes we tend to forget that how young these guys are. They are not mature adults who know how to balance emotions and relationships. For a young boy, who lived his life in extremes , it will be very difficult to reach that equilibrium , hence this is needed and part of his learning.
