The show: it opens with a shot back to Nainital where the phone insistently rings but comes up as a blank call whenever KS' father picks it up. Her mother looks nervously as her father gets increasingly irritated. He gets up to leave and her mother offers to pick up the next call that comes. When she does, what she hears is KS sniffling at the other end. This is the first time that KS reveals to her mother that she has lost her unborn child. What they dont' know is that her father has picked up an extention and is crying his heart out at the same story. KS tells her mother of her success and the party that is being held in her honour. After shedding many tears, the call is done. Her mother is startled by her father coming up from behind her. He urges her to go to KS, and gives her a gift for his daughter.
Back in the city, the party's in full swing. KS draws applause when she sashays down a staircase dressed in full, glittering red, the colour of fresh blood. She greets her guests, but her eyes are constantly drawn to the entrance. Who is she looking for? As she turns away, her mother appears! They fall into each other's arms -- KS looks like a child again -- and are thrilled to little bits. Her mother gives her the gift which turns out to be a little icon, and KS instantly realises that her father has forgiven her. Her happiness quotient has just gone up. She takes her mother to Prithvi. That Gnarly Gnome actually stoops to touch her mother's feet! With apologies to all, it was Ugh.
Josh enters, all star-like and sparkly. He cuts a swathe through his fans and saunters across to KS and her gang, gets introduced to her mother (no feet-touching there, let me tell you!) and continues acting cute. KS confesses to Josh that she has no desire to speak to the press. Instantly, Josh gathers them around KS, who mutters an irritated thanks at him through a false smile. Nicely done.
A reporter asks what she contributes her success to, and Naina and her family has the misfortune to enter at that time. In what is a rather nasty encounter, KS draws Naina over to the reporter and lays her success at Naina's unloving, unhelpful feet. I can understand KS antagonism to Naina, but I still think that AK had no right to subject his family to this kind of exposure and humiliation. Through it all, KS' mother is not having a good time. KS walks off with a toss of her pretty little head, and Naina gets back to her regularly scheduled program of constant glower. The men in her life stand mutely around her. AK has this peculiar look of satisfaction on his face. BTW, in what is probably co-ordinated, AK wears a white shirt with slashes of blood red in the collar and cuffs. Don't know why I noticed this, but it stood out.
The next bit was the most intriguing and interesting of the entire show, and it lasted for all of 5 microseconds. As AK walks towards the bar, he catches KS' mother's eye. She looks very uncomfortable, and he looks .. I don't know what. For the first time that I've seen him perform, MIKhan failed to get what he wanted to say across! I guess what AK might have wanted to do was to look contrite and apologetic at KS' mom, but that was not what came across. He looked .. well, weird. I think it's not just us who are getting tired of KYPH? :-( :-( :-( But I thought it was interesting that the director/writers actually brought in this angle of AK trying to do a long-distance apology to KS' mother.
In the center of the dance floor, Josh after a stint at DJ-ing, charms KS' mother into a dance. Gnarly Gnome gets KS to go the floor with him. In the middle of the dance, KS does what she does best: catches AK's eye while he does what he does well: catches her eye right back while drowing his sorrows in alcoholic drink. AK sits at the bar when a bevy of females swarmes around him. :-) KS casually walks across, her eyes on AK all the while. The swarm notice KS and instantly flit away to the latest hottest star. AK is bemused; KS is gloating. And it caused instant discomfort. It was like watching someone cut his hand and watch smilingly while someone else ate it. It was another Ugh situation in this show.
Alliyah has been watching this from afar, comes across to lay a comforting hand on AK's shoulder. He's still smiling in that ghastly manner. When she asks him whether it didn't hurt to have all his fans leave him, he says no. After all, he wins when KS wins, and that is what she has just done.
End of show. The preview for the next day: Naina is going bananas at the realisation that AK is really giving up his all, and them too, to KS. She wants him stopped before _all_ is lost. Seriously, the writers HAVE to think up some new lines for this lady! Thankfully, Karthik doesn't say any of his usual lines. But we do get to see a shadowy figure at the party say "I've done what you wanted (boss)" and a dark suit clad hand giving the figure a lump of cash.
I don't know why this episode disturbed me. I guess when AK was in a destructive rage against KS, there was ALWAYS a sense that he was fighting to destroy all his empathy and love for KS out of himself. All his rage at KS explicitly ended up hurting him. In KS' destructive rage against AK, there appears to be nothing left in KS herself to hurt or destroy. What comes across is truly the sense of a KS-machine, cold and emotionless, standing with an axe over an AK, who is on his knees with his head bowed and his neck exposed for her to cut off. It doesn't feel nice, not anymore. It looks like a mad race to death with everyone that love them watching helplessly from the sidelines. Josh, Alliyah watching AK with their hands tied; Daadi might be remorseless if she refuses to open up to the possibility of AK having changed; a new possibility that KS' mother might actually wonder why AK is such a different broken-hearted boy from the spunky one who she had met last in Bombay.
Sigh. I don't know what to hope for anymore. So I too will helplessly watch from the sidelines, whether I like it or not. I feel that I owe the AK/KS characters that much. :-(
