Yes.. Even 3.94 million is a huge number.. compare it with present strength of armies of India or US, which are close to 1.5 million only.. I'm sure you need to cover a huge area including many rivers and mountains to put these many soldiers on war..

Regarding the map, we can surely include Afganistan and Pakistan in Bharat-varsa at that time.. coz Gandhar (modern Kandahar) was the kingdom of Shakuni.. Burma was also a part of India in ancient times, including Nepal and Bhutan... But i doubt about Mongolia.. Between Mongolia and India, there is a huge area occupied by mainland China which has its own parallel history.. also, the huge Himalaya was there in between India and China, in turn Mongolia.. May be someone can clear this doubt with some ancient map or information from MB..

meanwhile, I found a good map about India at the times of MB on Internet.. I don't know about the authenticity of this map, but it provides a good reference..

Thank you, Shyam. The map is interesting.

Yes, 3.94 million is still a very large number, as it's nearly 4 million. I think the Kurukshetra War had the largest armies fighting. Right?

Though Kurukshetra War was definitely one of the bloodiest war in the history of humankind, it doesn't come even remotely close to World War 2. Here are some of the details of largest wars, in terms of total casualties (both civil and military)...

-> World War 1 had about 20 million casualties including 8-9 million in military deaths.
-> World War 2 was the bloodiest of all.. having around 53 million deaths in a span of 6 years..
-> Russian Civil War (1917'1923) witnessed around 20 million deaths with about 15 million in civilian casualties.

There are many other long term wars which have witnessed an enormous number (more than 10 million) of civilian and military deaths, e.g. Mongol invasion of Europe, Chinese revolution under Mao, Massacre by Joseph Stalin in Russia etc..

However, Kurukshetra war has its unique record about the causalities per day.. 4 million soldiers perished in a span of 18 days only. this equals to around 2,20,000 deaths per day.. that too without Weapons of Mass Destruction like Atom bomb or chemical gases.. this butchering was done using bows and arrows and maces only..

Also, in Kurukshetra War, there was no territorial gains.. the survivor was the only winner.. it was a 'do or die' in its true sense..

Hi, my name is Durga, and this is my first time on KHMK Forum after a loooooooong time.
You are very knowledgeable about wars, dates, and history.👏 Just a question. Are you a historian?
You're right. I think what makes the Kurukshetra a unique war is that 4 million people were killed in the span of 18 days. And that too with bows, arrows, maces, swords, darts, etc. But then, divine astras were involved, and Shri Krishna said that if the Kurukshetra War had lasted any longer, the world would have been destroyed, because so much divine energy was being used, and people were being annihilated left and right, fighting from sunrise to sunset. Warrios like Bhishma, Karna, Drona, Duryodhana, Arjuna, Bheema, etc, who were fighting with all the strength they had, were too much for Mother Earth to bear.
No doubt many many more people were killed in so many other wars, but the Kurukshetra was the only war that lasted for days. All the other wars laster years and years.

Hi Durga; long time no see, huh?😊 Agree with you anyhow.
Thanks for the info, Shyam; you're right. How could I forget the World Wars? I'm particularly interested in World War I, because of this book I read, Rilla of Ingleside, which is really sad and centers around the time of World War I.
But the unique thing that no other war has is that the Kurukshetra lasted only 18 days compared to the number of years of the other wars.
Thanks again for the info.

I think what makes this war unique is that brothers were fighting against brothers and ALL kingdoms of India participated in the war..Only Balram and Rukmi chose not to be a part of the war..it was a war between good and bad..
