@ godisone..i don't know the exact words but i heard that yudhistir said "Ashvathama is dead..elephant or no , don't know" something like this..but yudhistir was apologetic later that he lied...whatever yaar..Drona was siding with adharm and he had to be killed..Dhristadyuna did a wrong thing by cutting his head when he was unarmed....but then pandavas didn't have any other option and when Lord Krishna suggested them then he must be right.....

Good one from ananya regarding Swadharma and Shreyas.
I think even in Ramayana we find this example.
Kumbhakarn and Vibheeshan both knew Ravan had did a wrong thing by kidnapping Sita. They tried to reason out with Ravan but there was no result.
Ultimately during the war Vibheeshan for the greater good of his clan chose to side with Sri Ram, whereas Kumbhakarn chose to remain with his brother.

If you carefully look , you'll find that the Kauravas were sinful right from the beginning, it started right with poisoning Bhim and throwing him in the river. All the Mahapurush of the Kaurava side stayed silent when Draupadi was being derobed-- every one had their own reasons, Bheesma Pitamah was loyal to the throne, Dron, Kripachaya were also loyal to their profession/jobs. It was only Vidur who had protested during Draupadi's Vastraharan.

The Pandavas suffered and suffered. They were the heirs to the Hastinapur throne, but they were tried to be killed in fire first, they were sent to exile. Later the Pandavas were given Khandaprastha (a barren land) to rule and Dhritrashtra kept Hastinapure for Duryodhan. But Khandaprastha was converted into a beautiful Indraprastha, Duryodhan eyed it and tried to take it away. Despite being princes, Pandavas always suffered througout their lives-think of their one year exile in Biratnagar, what life the five brothers and Draupadi led.

Duryodhan and his allies were to be destroyed, if it was not Pandavaas, someone else, whom the Lord appointed , would have killed them to establish Dharma over Adharma. Pandavs were only instrumental.
And more so, many-a-time it is said that Draupadi was the cause of Kurukshetra, even Draupadi had a feeling. But Lord Krishna explained to her that to avenge her insult, there was no need of a Kurukshetra war. Duryodhan and his allies could be killed anytime. He wanted to establish Dharma and for that he needed to trace all the adharmis and the ones who took the side of Duryodhan were all considered to be taking the side of wrong. But what to say about Bheeshma Pitamah, Guru Dron, Salya etc. These people actually helped the Pandavs to win the war--Bheeshma himself told his death secret to Arjun and likewise, these people who had to take the side of Duryodhan laid their lives for Dharma to win.Think of Eklavya and Guru Drona story. Everybody would agree that Guru Dron did massive injustice to Eklavya. Dron took the thumb of Eklavya and helped Dharma to win, because he never wanted anyone to be compared to Arjun. Why? Dron was well aware that Arjun had the wisdom to judge between good and bad. But neither his son Aswathama nor Eklavya had that wisdom. Both of them joined the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war. Aswathama actually used BRAHMASTRA to kill Uttara's son Parikshit, despite repeated warnings from his father before that Brahmastra should be used for only good purpose and noone should use it for personal benefits/ revenge.

Even in Ramayan, when Ravan called all the Rakshas from all over the world , it gave Prabhu Shri Ram the chance to get all of the Rakshas at one place and kill all of them. Prabhu Shri Ram could have taken Bali's help instead of Sugriv's, as Bali was more powerful, but He killed Bali as he was Adharmi and more or less Bali committed the same sin as Ravan. Ravan abducted Sita and Bali captured Sugriv's wife.

God has plans of everything and He knows past, present and future. Shri Krishna made Pandavs the instrument of His mission. During HIS imparting knowledge to Arjun of Bhagwad Gita, He said that all these people --Bheeshma, Dron had already been killed by Him, MEANS He already set the time for their death. Arjun only has to make it practical.

Sorry if my reply is a bit out of track. I hope I could get my point clear.

Superb replies by lalitha di, Charu, Ananya, n Sharbani
nice discusion started by shyam Rathi
Many people skip reading Geeta before reading the war part that's why these doubt arises
I agree with sharbani (omshanti1111) that its wrong to blame Draupadi for the war. There was enimity between Pandavs n Kauravs even before Draupadi entered their life. War happened. because of Dhritaraastra, Shakuni n Duryodhan

Thank you all, for carrying on with this topic.. nice thoughts coming in the process...

My doubt, or a question, was it POSSIBLE for the Pandavas to defeat Kauravas without any of those methods that I've mentioned in the first post? Let's forget about Dharma and Adharama for a moment and decide this based on their army and skills...

Hi Shyam,
Quoted from the Mahabharata translation in "Sacred Texts" Website
<quote>
Hearing (invisible beings cry out) that Bhishma and Drona and Karna and Bhurishrava were slain unrighteously, they became afflicted with grief and wept in sorrow. Beholding the Pandavas filled with anxiety and grief, Krishna addressed them in a voice deep as that of the clouds or the drum, saying, "All of them were great car-warriors and exceedingly quick in the use of weapons! If ye had put forth all your prowess, even then ye could never have slain them in battle by fighting fairly! King Duryodhana also could never be slain in a fair encounter! The same is the case with all those mighty car-warriors headed by Bhishma! From desire of doing good to you, I repeatedly applied my powers of illusion and caused them to be slain by diverse means in battle. If I had not adopted such deceitful ways in battle, victory would never have been yours, nor kingdom, nor wealth! Those four were very high-souled warriors and regarded as Atirathas in the world. The very Regents of the Earth could not slay them in fair fight! Similarly, the son of Dhritarashtra, though fatigued when armed with the mace, could not be slain in fair fight by Yama himself armed with his bludgeon! You should not take it to heart that this foe of yours hath been slain deceitfully. When the number of one's foes becomes great, then destruction should be effected by contrivances and means. The gods themselves, in slaying the Asuras, have trod the same way. That way, therefore, that hath been trod by the gods, may be trod by all.

I like the question at the end of the first post by godisone 👏

Anyways, just a correction to Shyam's first post - Shikhandi did not kill Bheeshma Pitamah 😆 But yeah, Shikhandi was the instrumental one in bringing down the great warrior in battle.
And one more to add to the list:
- Arjuna shot off the arm of Bhurisravas' limb from his blind side as he was attacking Yadav warrior Satyaki.
An explanation for given for that action though, and I personally found it fair enough 😊
God bless.

godisone is pretty smart girl..i can't beat her on religious argument. 😕

pandava's exile was finished and yet arjuna came in form of female and fought those kauravas. The kauravas were never aware of it that arjuna would be coming.
if they had came to know. they would have made a strategy to stop arjuna....its like australian team is playing against indian team and tendulker is their problem...they will make a strategy how to stop Tendulker.
i personally say Virata war is nothing.. the true identiy of a true brave warrior come when he is ready for the death, fighting with great courage and full strength. you saw this in kurushetra war. Kurushetra was was a big war people still remembe rthis..it was a war where tons of ..tons of people died...it was the war where warriors used divine powers to defeat other warriors....this war took the real test of the warriors and it proved that karavas' warrior were stronger...Pandava had difficulties to defeat Pitamah, Drona and Karna. they had no option but to cheat to kill those powerful warriors.
people say that Karna ran away in virata war and Gandarva war..........OK fine.... when it was a time in kurushetra war, Arjuna had no answer to Karan and he escaped twice from karna and it was lord krishna's interruption..
Arjuan was't able to kill Pitamah..even death wasn't able to kill him.....so arjuna had no other option but to use shikandi for his shield and to shot arrows on pitamah.......in my opinion, a true, powerful and brave warriors don't do such thing..they will prefer to die rather than killing someone by cheating. ......Karna never cheated on arjuna..he also spared his life after the sun set......he had nothing...no shakti weapons, no kavach, kundals, curses from two sages, difficult promises to kunti, salya's in difference, lord krishna's interuption....yet he was able to kill arjuna...he was more powerful.
Kurushetra gives the real identy of real warriors such as Karna, Pitamah, Drona and Duryodhan " I don't like duryodhan but his bravery and dedication inspires me."
in pandava, i choose Abhimanyu as one of the best warriors

Duryodhan was so selfish and jealous of the Pandavas that even after they suffered their exile, he would not give them their kingdom back, The rules per the second dice game were that whoever lost would have to go into exile for 12 years and the 13th year incognito, and the winner would protect their kingdom for them and give it back to them after their exile. The Pandavas followed the rules; the Kauravas didn't. Now tell me, who are the Adharmis?

Any bloodshed that happened on the Kurukshetra was all Duryodhan's fault, because it was due to his obstinacy and stubborness that his best friend Karna died, his grandsire Bheeshma, and his guru Drona. He, who rightly should have returned Indraprastha to the Pandavas after their exile, is the reason for everyone's death, on both sides.
Why does everyone think the Pandavas should have keeped quiet when Duryoudhan refused to give back the kingdom? It was theirs, and if they followed the rules of the dice game, so should Duryodhan. Seriously, Duryodhan had Hastinapura. Indraprastha was rightfully the Pandavas. They were the ones who had it made into a flourishing city when the Kauravas' father gave them a barren land. What would you all have done if your home was taken unfairly from you, and then not given back to you when you fulfilled the rules of your exile?
The Kauravas had to be punished both for insulting a woman in a heinous way and being selish and immoral enough not to return the Pandavas' kingdom to them. Shri Krishna said the way they died was deserved, and those who do not act like true warriors don't deserve to die like them either.

duryodhan and shakuni both were responsible.
