Keshav turned blue after His battle with Kaalianag who had come to Yamuna and had started to poision it with his zehar. When Keshav found out ji, He threw the ball into the Yamuna. The ball was Saudama's and he wanted his ball back no matter what. So Keshav jumped into the Yamuna, where He swam to where Kaalianag was sleeping. His wives asked Keshav not wake Kaalianag up or else Keshav will be killed, but Keshav started to walk around Kaalianag. Then Keshav stepped on Kaalianag's tail, and Kaalianag breathed his bluish poision out, which flew towards Keshav, turning His complexion blue ji. Keshav was dark skinned, but after this incident He got the name Shaam.
So Keshav kept stepping on Kaalianag's tail till he finally woke up ji. Kaalianag was full of ankar(ego) and it was time to be broken. Kaalianag wrapped his body around Keshav to squeeze the life out Him. But Keshav's body expanded as Kaalianag's grip grew tighter ji. Finally, when Kaalianag's body could handle it no more, he finally realized who Keshav really was. He asked for forgiveness and Keshav told him to leave the Yamuna.
It is said that snakes had straight heads, not the fllat topped ones we see today. That day, Kaalianag brought Keshav out of the water on his head. Keshav, then started dancing on his head, hence the flat head ji.
Also, Keshavs saakas had run to Yashoda Maiya, and told her ke Keshav had jumped into the poisionous Yamuna. She ran to the banks and kept circling it around trying to locate Keshav. After Keshav had come out of the water and His dance, he went to Yashoda Maiya. He said ke that if Maiya had jumped in rather than circling the banks, maa se phele beta na maarta.
This is what I have been told by my Pitaji, and I believe him fully.
