Saakshi Tanwar gets nostalgic

Mumbai: For a lot of actors, the walk to stardom has not been easy. But for Saakshi Tanwar, who has become the bhabhi of the nation, it wasn't that difficult.

Going back in time: Saakshi Tanwar

Saakshi, a student of Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi was perusing a diploma course in software for three-and-half years. And like a diligent student, she was gung-ho about civil services and seriously preparing for that until something happened.

"One fine day, a friend called me and asked whether I was interested in hosting a show. I was puzzled. She told me that her producer wanted someone who could speak good Hindi and had a decent face. My friend was hosting the show for DD and her co-host hadn't turned up. It was an eleventh hour call. Thinking of no harm, I went ahead and did it," Saakshi says.

And thus began her journey to stardom. She started hosting shows on a temporary basis and that made way for a good amount of pocket money.

And then finally big break came in the form of the serial Rajdhani. "Director Gurbir Singh Grewal offered my first lead role and things changed drastically," she says.

She began shooting from Delhi. Slowly, in between all this her studies took a backseat. And the reactions from her family were quite varied. "My father was very supportive but my mother was a little reluctant. While doing the show, I started writing the script for Bhanwar, a show on real life stories. I realised over time that what I was doing was not for pocket money; it was more of exploring my creative side," she adds.

After this stint, she came down to Mumbai for a few days. "I was supposed to do a show which was produced by Kunal Kohli and Raveena Tandon. But it never took off. Then one day I went to the Balaji office with a friend who had to collect a cheque from them. That's when Ekta's maasi Nirmala Sood spotted me. She wanted my photographs and in no time I bagged the lead role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii," she says.

Interestingly, she did not want shift her base from Delhi to Mumbai and turned down the offer. "I was a little scared to move to Mumbai. I put up different conditions to politely turn down the offer. Surprisingly, Ekta agreed to all the conditions and thus began the journey of Parvati bhabhi," she ends.

MOVIE Review: COFFEE HOUSE

Film: Coffee House (Drama)
Cast: Ashutosh Rana, Sakshi Tanwar, Harsh Chhaya
Direction: Gurbir Singh Grewal
Duration: 2 hours
Critic's Rating:

Remember your coffee house days when you measured life in coffee spoons and talked about conquering the moon. Well, now it's time to re-visit those high aspiration times when revolution seemed round the corner and Utopia anything, but an impossible dream.

Coffee House is a small, unostentatious, yet meaningful film about dreaming big, seeking change and making a difference. Naturally, in today's high-voltage electioneering, the film comes as a topical reminder of the power of the common man. Ostensibly inspired by the life and times of noted theatre activist, Safdar Hashmi who died a brutal death in the 1990s, the film focuses on the valiant attempts of Ashutosh Rana and his street theatre group to change the system and make it more accountable, inclusive and humane. Apart from his nukkad natak, Rana also runs his wife's (Sakshi Tanwar) newspaper but steps back when the business interests of the paper come in conflict with his voice-of-protest editorial content. This however is a minor point of conflict between the much in love husband and wife who are the focal point of the ensemble cast which assembles in the neighbourhood coffee house for its daily adda-baazi sessions. The coffee house does not only witness a robust exchange of ideas on society, politics and ethics, it also becomes a platform for showcasing contemporary India's major problems.

the theatre group includes a live-in couple that breaks apart when the ambitious young girl is seduced by corporate honcho, Harsh Chhaya into a richer, more glamorous world of TV journalism. Also present are a group of senior citizens with their own share of problems (neglect and lack of respect from their offspring) and a con men trio that does a Robin Hood to corrupt bureaucrats.

Eventually, all the assorted coffee house regulars (read decent citizens, desirous of change) come together and begin a home-spun revolution. This naturally rattles the ruling politicians who are not ready from the new Indian who calls himself a Hindustani instead of a Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isai. Time for the goons to rush in....

The film scores mostly in its performances by actors who may not be big stars but are big in talent. Like, Ashutosh Rana who plays a consummate activist; Harsh Chhaya who perfects the art of genteel exploitation; Vinod Nagpal who touches you with his oldie 'emotional fool' act and Sakshi Tanwar who makes a smooth switch from the ever-wailing Parvati (Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki) to a woman of substance. Don't go looking for regular naach-gana and gloss and you will find substance and a soul.

'Coffee House' is a nostalgic take on old blissful days

Spicezee Bureau

Gurbir Singh Grewal's 'Coffee House' is a modest and meaningful cinema that urges the youth to dream big and bring change. The film is an evocative reminder of the power of common man whose determination can transform the system.

'Coffee House' is undoubtedly inspired by the life of theatre activist Safdar Hasmi, who faced a brutal end during the 1990s. In 'Coffee House', Ashutosh Rana plays the character of a theatre activist of a street theatre, who desires to bring change in the society to make it gentle, all-encompassing and responsible.

TV actresses Sakshi Tanwar plays the role of Ashutosh Rana's wife who also runs a newspaper. Ashutosh Rana runs the newspaper along with his wife but withdraws back on the issues of editorial protest coming mid way the business interest of the newspaper. However, this episode is just one of the inconsequential variances among the much in love couple. The main focus of 'Coffee House' lies in the neighboring coffee shop that serves as the hot bed of ideology, where people exchange their views on diverse issues of politics, ethics and society. Indeed, this 'adda baazi' highlights the grappling issues of Indian society. It is a platform that provides a unique opportunity to interact with each other and exchange views on contemporary issues.

Apart from Ashutosh Rana and Sakshi Tanwar, 'Coffee House' also presents the life of a glamorous TV journalist in Harsh Chhaya. The film also boats of praiseworthy performances by a number of other characters who play a bunch of old men struggling with neglect and lack of respect from their children.

'Coffee House' is a microcosm of macrocosm where people from diverse cultural background meet and exchange their thoughts on various issues. In spite of no big names to draw the crowds, 'Coffee House' scores on its own merit with classic performances of Ashutosh Rana and Harsh Chhaya who carry their role with fervor and flamboyance. Vinod Nagpal will touch you with his 'emotional fool' act and so will Sakshi Tanwar who is a modern day woman of substance.

'Coffee House' is not your typical Bollywood flick but thought evoking cinema, that certainly raises issues which will make you sit back think. 'Coffee House' is undoubtedly a dream for impossible.

Ratings: Three cheers

We mostly go for long drives, especially out of Mumbai. We just like to pass time. I still remember our holidays when we went to the North. It was on the banks of Ganga."
She gives details about her favourite places to visit and says, " Normally we go to nearby locations into the wild, sometimes we come back in a day otherwise we go and set up tents and everything, do camp fire and lots of masti. We also like to go for overnight drives. There is a place near Murud Jajira called Kashid. It is a very nice and quite place. There is a nice beach and at the corner of that beach a shape of a tree, which is made up of stones. This place is away from the beach, so normally no one goes there. So we can have fun, play and no one disturbs us."

But if the kids of her friends are coming for long tours then her sons too come along with her. This place has a river flow, so on the bank of it you can spend time. The only problem is that there are lots of insects and mosquitoes, so we make sure to apply our creams and liquid to save our skin.

Male negative character
We usually see vamps in TV shows doing all the evil, but here are a few famous bad men who found a place in our hearts:

Chetan Hansraj: As Sasha in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, he was the illegitimate son of Om Aggrwal. His height and black costumes had quite an impact on audiences. Though Sasha became 'good' after re-entering the show, he will always be remembered for his evil ways.

It's Ramzan time

With the month of Ramzan starting, we asked some of our Muslim TV stars about their preparations:

Ali Asgar
Though I'm working on my play, I'm fasting because Allah has given me the strength. I do not know how I'm doing but the strength automatically comes from inside. I believe Allah is testing us to know how strong we are mentally. In my family, my wife and I keep roza, my mom can't because she has diabetics, and my son is just five.

Saakshi Tanwar judges the Fair and Lovely Scholarship

The Fair and Lovely Scholarship programme entered its 7th year with yet another set of wonderful young women striving to fulfill their dream of a higher education. The experience of the interview itself was one of awe for the many girls who came to Mumbai from far-flung areas of Maharashtra. For many, this was their first visit to a city and for some, the first time ever to experience such hospitality. But this did not deter them from their aim to put their best forward and compete to avail of the much-required scholarship to pursue their dream of earning a graduation, post-graduation or doctorate degree.

The esteemed panel consisting of Shaina NC, Kavita Karkare, Padmashri Lila Poonawala and Saakshi Tanwar amongst others were moved by some of the heart wrenching stories that scream of discrimination against the girl child. While for some it was hope against hope, as their parents who had the will to educate their child, were too poor to afford the fee. For some others it was not the fee that mattered but the cost of reaching their college or buying the required books for study that proved a daunting threat to their goals of empowerment through education.

Commenting on the initiative, Saakshi Tanwar said, "This is a very novel initiative of Fair and Lovely Foundation. The scholarship seems to be a deeply thought out programme. It has given me insights like the fact that often it is not the fee that stops a girl from seeking college education. For most of these students who come from small towns and villages, higher education means having to travel to the next town which could be about an hour or two."

Kavita Karkare chipped in to add, "Yes it is very unique to find a thoughtful scholarship. It has spotted the problem and recognized that it could be something as banal as the cost of bus fare she needs everyday that puts her off from seeking higher education. The Fair and Lovely Scholarship actually pays the student all costs from her travel, to books to hostel fees which in essence cover all costs really required to allow her to complete her education."

With the first of these interviews ending in Mumbai, Fair and Lovely Foundation kick starts the intensive process of short listing, with similar interviews scheduled across India in Lucknow, Indore, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. With 2009, the Fair and Lovely Scholarship enters its seventh year, reaching to the girls from economically underprivileged strata to live up to their dreams. The past has seen eminent personalities like Kiran Bedi, Air Marshal Padmavati Bandhopadyay, Captain Indrani Singh, singer Kavita Krishnamurthi, theatre and TV artist Juhi Babbar, author and writer Sivasankari, Advocate Pinky Anand, public prosecutor Rohini Salian, current home secretary Ms Chandra Iyengar, TV artist Rakshanda Khan, Director TISS, Dr. Parasuraman associated with the Fair and Lovely scholarship.

Heart of the matter

Saakshi Tanwar learnt the hard way that relationships are the only things that matter in one's life, not material gains... or losses

• I was returning… from my sister's place in Pathankot, Punjab to Delhi by train. I was carrying two bags with me, of which one bag had a lot of my valuables in it. Realising it would be difficult for me to travel alone with the luggage, my father offered to come along and help me carry the bags. When we got off at Delhi station, I realised that the bag with the valuables had been left behind in the train. My dad had assumed that it was with me and I had thought he was carrying it. I felt like I had lost everything I had.

• I behaved horribly… and said some very nasty things to my father after that. I blamed him completely for the loss.

• Later I locked myself… up in a room and continued brooding and sulking, after we reached home. My father remained completely quiet all through, he didn't respond at all to all my jibes and nasty remarks.

• My sister intervened… and she asked me just one question, "Was there anything in that bag that cannot be bought again?" The answer to that was obvious. Then she added that relationships once broken cannot be mended again. I instantly realised my horrible mistake and ran to my father, hugged him tight and sobbed my heart out. Once I had apologised to him, I felt better, and he accepted my apology instantly.

• I realised… that there is nothing more important than the relationships we make and are born with. And that we shouldn't do or say anything to ruin them but should preserve them with all we have as they're truly special.

• I truly understood… the importance of my parents that day. The saying goes: 'You don't understand the true value of your parents until you become one'. But I think I've realised their true worth before that. I understand that what they've done for me cannot be quantified.

• Material loss… is immaterial. Ever since this incident, I don't bother if I lose something or if something breaks in the house, as none of those things really matter. All that really matters to me now is the bond of love that I share with my parents and loved ones.
